Why do power tool companies make products that don't last when they could make far better products for the same price? Why is planned obsolescence tolerated by costumers?

There are a lot of things you can say about it, but the simplest is this; 'spiritual disease'.

The ruling faith of the ruling theocracy makes it a principle to defect on your neighbors and promote the bad over the good in general, so why should you expect anything different for any specific sphere in particular? People are simply following the norms that their tastemakers set for them, regardless of if they consciously think of such things in such terms (especially then), and compounding effects all flow downstream.

Build up of mutational load and decline of human capital over the past 200~ years is also a factor of course.

Power tool companies don't "make" anything other than some profit by essentially drop-shipping stuff with their logo on it from china.
All the product ideas, conception, prototypes, design, tooling, manufacturing and testing is done by chinese people in china.
They're at the point where they don't even know what their product line is.
Or, even beyond that, where the name (in the case of milwaulkee) is now owned by the chinese entirely and the US entity is a sales office.

5/6/2025, 1:14:58 AM No.2914677
making shit tools that don't last and don't offer any warranty is super easy.
making tools that are robust and last a long time and still backing your product with parts availability long-term and good warranty and service is actually also very easy, consumer just ends up paying more for it.
making your tools last just a little over the warranty period with parts that are either unavailable and can't get service, or parts that end up costing nearly as much as a new tool anyway after replacement, and then spending a boatload of marketing money to promote your tool as a premium product that all the "professionals" use, that is where the real challenge lies. it takes a massive amount of R&D and marketing prowess to make planned obsolescence actually work.

So you're saying that they take the path that costs them the most, while angering customers the most, and somehow they make more money doing it that way? What business model is that, exactly?

You donโ€™t know what you want.

There are tool brands that sell drills and batteries made to be repaired for 20+ years. They cost twice as much as the stuff at Home Depot and the performance specs are mostly outdated. Turns out most guys probably want to spend less money on a 10 year tool that performs better and then replace it with the new model when it breaks.

Iโ€™m sure you would also like to drive some 80s barge that never rusts, gets 6.8mpg, takes twice as long to get to 60mph and brake as a modern Suburban. Oh and itโ€™s sketchy to drive above 70mph unlike a new Kia thatโ€™s smooth at 120, and thereโ€™s a 50% chance of dying in a crash above 30mph, and 90% chance of death in a crash at highway speeds.

Those things donโ€™t exist because most people want a car that lasts for 10 years no problem and they can upgrade in 36-72 months.

Yep, but what else can you do? We live in the era of consumerism where corporations spend thousands and thousands on making things last less. Up to 20 years ago simulations weren't widespread so things were actually built strong just in case, so they would last. Nowadays everything is designed to break after the warranty period ends and there's nothing you can do about it.

I guess it depends on whether or not you can count on the infrastructure that produces the cheap ones to always be there.

I think what people want more than anything these days is hope for the future, and part of that is being able to buy things that will continue to meet your needs well into the future.

i get your arguement and it's probably true in certain circumstances

but i've used these old sawzalls and old corded (makita?) drills and whatnot
my m18s feel way more powerful and get the jobs done faster, not even considering the cordless/corded conundrum
like that drill in your pic surely still works
i would bet my m18 hammer drill will do any job faster and be less cumbersome and not have me deal with a chuck

at the end of the day all that matters is you feel good doing your work and get it done, so it's preference. but i 100% find these old corded tools inferior compared to what I've gotten used to with my m18s

i've even shown up on a job with a guy using some new battery tools that aren't my brand, he was struggling, I gave it a go and after 5 secs just got off the ladder and went and grabbed my own drill and it was no problem
i'm sure it's a user-tool understanding thing

It uses electrons. It is electronic. If you want to split hairs about logic, it has an adjustable bimetallic thermostat informing a circuit that follows if then end conditionals, albeit purely analogue. It's still logic in action.

Even the $2 aliexpress ones I've been getting over decade from
Recently I went to check what they have now and noticed they changed their warranty to lifetime
So I emails them and chingchongs replaced all my lights no question asked
