It is that time again /diy/. I want to dig and dig and dig and have a giant cave system under house. How can I live out my dream?

This is the abandoned tunnel I found under my house. It is lined with corrugated steel and has old electronics laying around. Obviously there had been a serious fire at one point.

this was a miner(pardon pun) crazy in suburban Silicon Valley in late 1980s when RE prices were running wild before the big crash of 1990.

IIRC at least one guy made two story secret basement.

Helps if you have an attached garage to load the dirt into truck.

pneumatic rams to break up rock, can even be the foot pedal powered kind. also make sure you reinforce as you dig, with the weight of a house above, it can cause shifting ... that means your house falls down AND you get stuck in a collapse underground and probably die.

When I was a kid my friend's basement had a door that lead to an unfinished but HUGE communal fallout shelter, with a staircase that went down at least 30 meters before reaching raw dirt. I've often dreamed about going there and keeping those stairs going or setting up some living quarters in one of the rooms. I fucking love bunkers.

I imagine a true tunnel system would start in the yard. And then connect to somewhere under the house. You literally wouldn't want to start digging under your house. You may undermine the integrity of the foundation.

Start the work away from it

Just start digging. Nothing bad will happen. Pic related is all just a Jewish plot my bosses use to press money out of our customers (and admittedly, it looks kinda cool) but itโ€™s all for show. You just need a guy (needs to be strong (Mexican) though), a pickaxe and a wheelbarrow (or bucket, but wheelbarrow speeds up work considerably.

I wonder if linkrel might work better than a pneumatic ram, as long as it was a hydroxy torch and you had good ventilation to keep it from getting too hot, thermal spallation might go faster than pneumatic rams

Hell yeah bunkers, Nuclear War Survival Skills by Kearney is a must-read for some really choice diagrams and great info. I think the Kearney Air Pump is legitimately a great choice for high volume low pressure ventilation

My house is built into the side of a hill, so I bet it would be easier to get started since I won't have to dig straight down and can go sideways, but I would still have to go through the block foundation to get to the hill, wonder how I can do this without fucking up my house.

Do you have any idea how many truckloads of dirt a basement can hold? Maybe region of 10k I'd say.

why not just poor the dirt down the storm water drains around the place? especially during the rain season, so long as you dont clog up the drain with too much at once, you could easily dispose of it at night with wheelbarrows.
