For years I've wanted picrel. I want a sensible car that is all function and zero capitalism. A car that we will drive after the nuclear holocaust.
But for some reason a simplistic survivalist car costs 50k. I don't have 50k, and I sure as hell wont take a bank loan so I can get a bunch of bent pipe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't I just build picrel in my garage out of metal pipe for a few hundred bucks?
I'm gonna do it anon.

the engine alone is going to cost a shitload more than that. i'd imagine you can get tons of "build your own car" plans on the internet, but plan to spend $5k-$10k if you use used parts, $40k+ for new parts.

It is almost trivially easy to make a usable vehicle yourself. It's also very inexpensive, assuming you're buying secondhand for the major components (and, if you have the ability to do this, there's no real reason not to).

It is NOT trivially easy to convince the state to actually let you drive the thing on public roads. Between whether your state even allows special construction titles or equivalent, getting hold of one of those titles, and insurance, the biggest roadblock to would-be builders is the bureaucratic, not technical. I've looked into this a bit. I'm in CA, and CA is actually one of the easier states to register SPCNS vehicles in. Which is insane, because it's fucking CA. What sort of emissions standards you have to meet (if any) is also potentially a problem.

A common loophole is to build something with 3 wheels and call it a motorcycle. Custom motorcycle builds are generally a lot easier to register than custom car/truck builds. Obvious downsides being the need for a motorcycle license and having to wear a helmet in what's potentially a fully-enclosed cabin.

No matter what you do, you have to realize it's still going to be more practical (and likely cheaper) to just fix up someone's old beater. That's not particularly interesting, though, and you don't end up with anything unique in the end.

iirc when you register a self built car you can only really do it on January 1st or 2nd as only a certain number are allowed to be registered per year. Kit car builders seem to not give a fuck and plow through with it.

Depends on the state. In CA, at least, I've heard that story. I've also heard that it's only a thing that USED to be true, and so few are building for a SPCNS registration that they don't go that fast any more.

I have no idea which is more accurate.

yeah you can make a car. this is my own project so far. I designed it myself in tinkercad, I dont have much money either so I cant afford someone elses r&d, so this is like the rc cars ive put together just bigger. I think i will have around 5 to 7 thousand dollar into it when its done.

>couldn't I just build picrel in my garage out of metal pipe for a few hundred bucks?
If you're asking questions this basic, you probably don't have the knowledge or capacity to build one. But it's super easy to learn if you're serious about it, there's tons of info out there. Read Keith Tanner's How To Build A Cheap Sports Car or the Haynes Locost Guide. Both are good resources to get you thinking about the right way to build your frame and source your parts if it's a project you really want to do. Just keep in mind that it's not a small project and you have to really want to do it. Otherwise, it ends up becoming an unfinished heap of scrap in the corner of the garage, like most kit car projects do.
>I want a sensible car that is all function and zero capitalism. A car that we will drive after the nuclear holocaust.
If that's your only goal, you're much better off just buying an old truck with a mechanical diesel in it.
>>2922621
Howdy fellow locost anon. You're the guy doing the mid-engine build, right? How's it coming along?
>>2922477
It totally depends on the state. When I got a VIN for mine, I lived in Ohio and it was pretty easy. I had to provide receipts for the major components to make sure nothing was stolen, they did a quick inspection in the parking lot at the DMV, an ops check for the lights, and they sent me on my way.

yep hey. its been slow going, like i havent done anything for a few months, after working on that foam part i decided the 15" wheels in the pic were too small I have some 17"s im going to use but I need to remake the spindles and the front lower control arms cause the wheels are so different. Im hoping my experience titling will go as smooth as yours, it seems like pretty much the same process. in IL it seems like having a clear title for a donor is the biggest thing like you need to sacrifice a vin to get a new one

>It is NOT trivially easy to convince the state to actually let you drive the thing on public roads.
That's not entirely true. Maybe in shitholes like CA or NY. In my state, there's just a number of fixed requirements that it has to meet:
>has to do 55MPH
>mufflers
>meet emissions standards
>headlights/taillights/turn signals
>seatbelts
>windshield wipers
That last one is the weirdest, because you don't actually have to have a windshield, but the wipers are non-negotiable.
It's not at all uncommon where I live, and a decent variety of other places I've been to, to buy/build an ORV like a dune buggy/sand rail, make those mods, and get a plate to make it street legal.

Nice. Yeah, sometimes it's hard to find the time for these big ass projects. Is yours scaled up at all? Mine is already a few percent bigger than a Lotus 7 and I've got 13's on mine that look right. 17s seem like they'd be way too enormous. Are you planning on running rubber band tires? And were you able to pull a vin plate from your engine donor car (if there was one)? Good luck with the titling.
>>2922653
Usually Miata. Most small kit cars are miata based, especially 7s. But like the other guy who accidentally pasted his forum search history into his post said, it's pretty easy to just make your own suspension with heim joints and tube.

Its scaled up a little bit, mostly wider the track width is 65", length is 99". ill be using small tires though so its not like a huge difference, these are the two tires. I think with the fenders and headlights it wont look so empty and the 15s probably would work but I get bigger brakes with the 17s and ive been thinking about that a lot. I cut up my donor, which was just my old daily, and i did save the vin plate but I dont think they need it

Do you have anything to show for us anon today to convince us that this is an undertaking you can make? Only success can reinforce success and you have to attain the small and basic ones first.

Yeah and they both need one. If one car doesn't crumple, the entire force of impact will be imparted on its entire body and by extension its inhabitants. The crumple zone exists to absorb impact and soften the blow.

You're not a manufacturer. So those rules don't apply to your one-off vehicle.
