I usually EDC a leatherman and a flashlight. The last flight I went on, I just took the flashlight because I knew the leathermen would never make it through TSA. The entire trip I felt powerless without my leathermen.

This lead me to put together a list of tools that I can bring with me instead.

The TSA rules are:
All tools must be less than seven inches
No blades or sharp edges ( Except scissors, which can have 4 inch blades)
No hammers or smashing tools
No tools with spikes (including flashlights with crowns)
No multi-tools with blades

Here are the tools I came up with. The multi-tool and swiss army knife don't have blades. The flashlight does not have a spiked front. The regular screwdriver is for self defense.

All these tools should be good for travel and EDC in the US. Now if I am planning to go to Europe, I am not so sure. I have heard that you can't EDC screwdrivers in England. I am not sure about the other tools. I am also not sure about other countries like France or Italy.

Leatherman used to make TSA approved multi-tools. But they stopped making them and the aftermarket prices have skyrocketed. Sometime TSA agents will still confiscate them, so even if you already have one it is too risky to carry it through TSA.

TSA employees are the dumbest people on the planet, I would never expect them to understand their own rules.

I've been called aside and had my carry on bag opened up in front of me when going through security in Madrid's airport because they wanted to check if my flashlight had a striking bevel on it, since it did not they did not care. I've also flown to Paris with a small sak but it was checked luggage so I had no issues with it.
In France is illegal to edc a blade but likely will not care, same for Italy. In the UK they'll probably throw you in jail if you carry a folding spoon with you, fuck that shithole, I don't know why would anyone ever visit that cursed island.

Also, realistically, are you expecting to fix your airbnb or rental car abroad? Or is the multitool your support "dog"? Why don't you just check it with your luggage instead? Or buy a 10€ chickshit from the hardware store or lidl upon arrival?

Maybe quit being a boomer and try to relax and enjoy your vacation rather than worrying about muh prepper mindset. Or maybe you're a poopskin with ill intentions and in that case stay in your fucking country.

European here, travelling a lot for work. The ‘tsa’ people vary by country but there’s zero consensus on what’s allowed and what not, it varies by agent too, most are hired staff with questionable backgrounds while Croatian iirc are military.

There are of airports where they let you through with everything in that pic, but also plenty that would happily confiscate all of the items except maybe the spoons and the tape measure. Amsterdam is pretty friendly, Paris is medium, German ones okay, Eastern European ones are pretty strict most of the time but if you take a flight at 6 in the morning they don’t care about anything. In Romania we got a VFD and a small circuit breaker confiscated but the straight razor was okay. Almost none will tell you the exact rules what you can take, and you’re not allowed to argue with them so no one really knows. Scissors are almost never allowed, screwdrivers often but not always, forks sometimes, pliers usually okay unless they’re huge, cutters most times aren’t.

I had a better idea for a scissor/defense weapon that can be brought on a plane: Pruning shears

I just carry this fancy bottle opener with shitty screwdriver. Also has mini crobar which is useful.
EDC larp is ridiculous, do you all wear old man belt clips or cargo pants?

>it boggles my mind

Mid 90s, 1st time international, flying out of Frankfurt. Coworker paranoid about security but has never flown international either. I don't know EU rules, listen to dumb faggot. Throw decent Gerber in trash barrel next to security line. Get thru security, walk to gate. On the way pass Victorinox store.

Probably, but it was in the clear plastic box of “things you can’t travel with” at Cluj airport for a year or so
