Alright /diy/ I need to apply base coat to an indoor wall, then primer, then paint. I have only worked with paint.

How am I supposed to prepare the base coat? Just putting water and the powder in a bucket? What are the measures? How do I apply the base coat? With what should I sand the wall after? Any sandpaper is good?

Now for the primer, the base coat says it is fast drying, but how long should I wait until I apply the primer? A day? An hour? Anything that I should know about primer or I just apply it like the paint? How long until the primer dries and I can move to finally paint?

Do you mean a skim coat, before the primer and paint? A layer of mud to flatten out the wall.

Don't bother with it, just buy premixed joint compound/mud. It is so much better quality. Mixing is a pain in the ass and it dries too fast to do anything useful with it. Plus it's all sticky and goopy, you won't get a smooth finish with it unless you're a pro at mixing which you won't be for these small projects.

I use 80-100 grit sandpaper. I use rougher than most people because it's faster and it's the same result as the 600 grit ones. I use one of those little rubber hand sanding blocks you can adapt sandpaper sheets to and I sometimes use one of those things you can attach a pole to sand a wall faster. Don't use too much force, use just enough to leave it smooth. Use your hand to test for smoothness.

I would typically wait a day for the mud to dry, then you can sand. Remove the dust after sanding and then apply the primer that same day.

Use the same technique as painting a wall. With cutting the perimeter, rolling and backrolling. I would wait 3-6 hours for it to dry, but on the specs it usually dries within 30 minutes.

wipe the wall with a finger and make sure it's clean before you prime. If your finger comes off white, your primer and paint will just peel off.
