I'm in the opposite position. we decided on a speed queen for our next, but will get an LG heat-pump dryer instead. wanted the Bosch, but their's is half the size of a regular drum.

our 6 yr Samsung (or whatever) pulls 5,600W. our solar system has an outflow safety switch at 9,500W. depending on irrigation, HVAC & deep water well pump.... I don't like resetting clocks.

I bought a refurbished kenmore wahser and dryer in 1996 for $660. the washer lasted 19 years, before I had to repair it. gave it to my brother who promptly dropped it off a dolly. it would have lasted another 10 or more years if not for that.

the dryer never died or needed repair in that time, and we only got rid of it when we moved, because our new house did not have natural gas.

I went and looked at a speed queen and the salesman said it would last at least 25 years. just could not see spending that much money on something that might last 5 or 6 years longer than a cheap on. I ended up getting a cheap washing machine with the least amount of bells and whistles. it doesn't matter what brand name they are almost all the same now. I got a top loader. the side loaders are all over priced, unreliable garbage.

I really wanted an old style mechanical timer washing machine as they are bullet proof, last forever, and easy to fix. but I don't know if anyone makes them anymore.

Im the op
My current washer is a 90s kenmore that came with the house
Its wearing out, it definitely needs a new suspension now but idk if its worth fixing just for something else to break.. its got rust on it and stiff and smells a little musty
The dryer is a 90s ge and still works fine so ill hold onto it for now

I recently had to replace my old speed queen, with a newer model TC. The quality has overall slumped and I regret not getting something half the price for what I got. Twice as loud as my 20+ year old Speedqueen too, I mean loud as shit, man. Granted I live in a small house, but it's a noticable difference.

You have to look at used or surplus industrial/institutional equipment. There is still a market for the bare bones washers and dryers but it's shrinking.
I picked up a "roper" (Whirlpool) washer and dryer for $50.00 that had been used on a pushboat on the Ohio. They needed a bit of paint, but have been very durable and reliable.
So far all I've had to replace was a spin clutch, and that took maybe an hour of work. Most of that was moving it in and out of the laundry room.

I have a Maytag nat gas dryer from the 1970's, I think 1971, it still works fine and the only problem with it is that the rubber gasket around the door is a bit cracked

Only good top loaders now are Speedqueen and maybe Maytag commercial units if you can find a real one. Both are cheap enough given everything else is over half as much and total rusting apart shite.

I can't imagine paying for a FF7 other than to say you have one though.

Impressive, very nice! My parents still have a Kenmore propane dryer from the 90s that works perfectly. Used to have the matching Kenmore washer but that ended up going to a family member and an early 2000s. A Whirlpool gold top loader was put in its place. The washer still works like new.
