Lads. I'm starting to plan out a diy hitbox build. Main thing I'm thinking over is how to make the enclosure. My initial thoughts is just a simple wooden box design with a sheet of plexiglass on top for artwork and sanwa buttons. I'm not really sure how to go about putting together a consistent button layout. Anybody have any experience making one of these to help me avoid doing anything too retarded?

What, like...the actual spacing of the buttons, or you're trying to make more than one of these and need a reusable template?

If the former, I just kind of laid my hand on a piece of paper like I would be on the buttons and marked where my fingertips were. That could then be used as a template to mark the aluminum I was using.

Honestly, in my (limited) experience, you have quite a bit of margin to fuck things up. Arcade buttons are just so big you have a lot of room to position your hand and still be over them.

I want a button layout template that's repeatable so I can cut holes into the wood and the plexiglass and I also want the layout to not look completely retarded with equal spacing as well at be decently ergonomic.

I'm thinking of making the button layout a custom one because I don't like the button placement for a lot of leverless controllers you can buy.

find a site that does custom laser cutting and have the top piece with the holes in it laser cut

Why do people always mention the brand of the button?
This is how I did the frame, it's to give the shape some rigidity. The height of the corner pieces are inset at the bottom so the bottom panel can be flush with the frame. You can do that for the top if you want that look but I preferred to have it protrude. I made the template in paint.net, used a glue stick to stick it to the wood sheet and then drilled it out.

Clamp the two together and drill them out at the same time.

Do I have to worry about top panel thickness for the buttons? From what I've been reading, if the holes are drilled to the right size the snap in sanwa buttons will hold in a thicker top panel just by friction.

It can work with just friction but if you want it to click in you'll have to check the button tolerances(the ridges from the base).
