I bought a York R301+ diamond rowing machine for cheap, and the screen doesn't work correctly. It lights up great (bad pic), but sometimes the buttons operate correctly, and sometimes only reset seems to work. None of the data updates when you use it though, so I'm assuming these have a sensor that is either not reading, or just an entire internal fault of the screen. Where should I begin on repairing it?

Look for broken soldering points.
You can try going over the whole board with a heat gun.

My camera isn't very good, but I think I'll try the heat gun, as none look obviously broken, but it looks poorly done from the factory.

It's pretty much impossible to spot these microfissures with the naked eye. But they can form over time and can result in sporadic failures like you described.

I have repaired thing with noticeable cracks in the solder, or blown caps, but I can't see anything obvious. It's late here, but I will attempt it tomorrow.

the buttons cause some sort of a high/low signal change. if it's like any other SPST button i've played with, there's probably a pull-up resistor. measure it with a multimeter when it's working fine. you'll probably see +3.3V or whatever when not pressed and 0V when pressed.

now measure it when it's acting up. is the +3.3V gone? then your power rail is defective. is it working as expected? then there's a problem downstream and you'll have to reverse engineer the circuit. does the button feed directly into an MCU pin or is there a bunch of logic gates and other bullshit between the SPST button and the MCU pin?

and to take a step back i would troubleshoot this as
>confirm button pull-up power rail is functioning correctly (because it's super easy to troubleshoot)
>if buttons work correctly, then quickly trace button signal to MCU input or wherever it terminates
>verify signal integrity here
>if bad signal integrity, then problem lies between button and MCU
>if good signal integrity, then start looking at MCU power rails or shorts on other MCU pins

Your first mistake was not buying a Concept2 rower
>Industry standard machine
>Made in VT, USA with imperial sized bolts
>All parts are stocked going back to their first model from like 1991
>All parts are surprisingly cheap
>American customer service
>Old models easily upgrade to the latest monitor
Ya dun goofed. I've had a model B, C, and D. All craigslist finds for $200-500. My favorite was the model B, the wireframe cage looked cool.
I will probably buy a new concept2 to support the company when I move out of my tiny apartment.

>American customer service
That plays on their phone too damn much at work. I have both the rower and ski erg. No problem with rower but ski erg are a knocking sound from moment I got it (both bought new). Contacted customer service and every goddamn email I sent the little shit reading it would miss key parts of my single paragraph long email. I actually had to confirm he was getting my entire email because he kept asking questions I had already answered. He seemed to have the attention span of someone who never put down their phone. Had to explain everything several times to him. Finally got sent a bushing that fixed the knocking that he initially said he couldn’t hear in the video I sent. “Sounds like a normal machine to me”There was an additional issue with the screen he refused to work with me on because again, he wasn’t reading the entire paragraph, so I gave up and decided to live with it.

I think they’re so legendary they’re up their own ass. Problems are going to occur no matter the quality level and they should probably be able to address it. Solid machines for sure but my experience with customer service wasn’t stellar.

Update:
It's still not 100% functioning after the heat gun, but I can now adjust the resistance which is the main thing

I'm already regretting my purchase. Wish I had spent more. I can't glue this back on, and can't think of a diy way to fix without just getting replacements from China. Any ideas?

The base is hard plastic, the foot part is shitty plastic. If it was just got me, I'd screw some old shoes onto it, but my wife has feet way smaller so probably wouldn't work

Do what everyone else does and buy a concept2 foot holder and nigger rig it on. Thats what my old gym did to their off brand rowers.
Shoulda bought a concept2 I am not memeing it's just the only rower that's worth buying. By a mile.

Seeing as the soldering on that board is just shit on general I'd do as>>2928061 said, see if there's a shit joint anywhere.try and flow those pads through most of them are only flowed on one side of the board. If you insist desolder the caps and test them
