I live in Massachusetts and right now the state makes it basically free to replace old heating systems with heat pumps. I just bought a house that has an old oil based heat system and I'd like to replace it with a heat pump.
I'm new to this stuff so I want to make sure I'm understanding what I need.
It's a one story home so the duct work shouldn't be too complicated, I'll just keep them near ground level in every room. The duct installation should be the most expensive part since the state is basically paying for the heat pump, right?

gov subsidized heat pump installs are a scam to reduce energy independence and grease palms for their planned obsolescence heat pump industry buddies. only do this if you can keep your old system in place so you don't die in the cold.

Single story, so you have a crawlspace or basement with no ducting now? If you can get access below the floor, ducting isn't hard to run but if it's a crawlspace, get it done right, proper insulation & protection against pests. If the home is on the larger side, get someone to plan it out first vs. just dropping vents wherever. It'll make a huge difference with hot and cold spots later on.
I swapped out my old gas furnace with a combo heat pump with a supplemental gas burner for days <20F. Used the gov't rebates to pay a chunk of solar & batteries, which also got a rebate. Now I get free AC all summer. It's a good move.

That's a mistake. It's not going to move a meaningful amount of heat in the winter so you are going to be running an 8-10 kW resistance heater to maintain temp. They really shouldn't be installed in areas where the average winter low temps are below 28 °F.

If it's using radiators, then you could hook up an air to water heat pump to the existing system. Though the best investment in terms of resulting comfort is UFH.

Vinyl flooring can usually take up to 28C/80F surface temperature, which is more than enough for UFH. You'd sooner get fumes from the sun shining on the vinyl.

Don’t do this in Massachusetts. I do HVAC in Massachusetts and you will be paying out the fucking ass to have anyone work on any kind of “unusual” residential unit. Like a ground source unit for example. I’ve never even seen one of those European air to water heat pumps here. What you should actually do is have a ductless system installed, it will allow you to have greater control over individual rooms and the Mitsubishi hyper heat units go down to like -10f and will still put out some heat. They will most likely put a kumocloud on your boiler, which is essentially a duel fuel control that will switch from mechanical heat to oil heat based off the outdoor temp. If you have any MA related hvac questions let me know, I work at one of the highest reviewed residential companies in MA.

I live in a 1950s ranch with radiant heat, and I want to retain it but use a heat pump that runs directly on solar to supplement the heat in winter and cool the largest open room in the house and dump the heat load into my pool with a heat exchanger. What is the difficulty to tie that all together? I already have 6 330watt panels to power it.

My suggestion is you get a Mitsubishi hyper heat ductless system connected to your boiler with the kumocloud. I’m not aware of any off the shelf systems that will allow you to reject heat into your pool, but I wouldn’t want everything integrated anyway. Get a separate heat pump pool heater.

It sounds like you plan on running the ductless unit primarily from solar, which I don’t know much about. But if you are, you should get a heatpump that gets fed 12vdc/48vdc to eliminate the extra inverter. Then have a heavy duty rectifier with an ATS for when the solar isn’t cutting it… please note I don’t know much about solar. If I were you though I would really be shooting to get Mitsubishi equipment, and I don’t believe they make a system that you can supply with VDC.

Agree with keeping the old system. Here in NH a lot of people say the heat pumps can't always keep up with the weather and need to burn oil sometimes. Mass is mostly zone 6 so warmer on average but still, never know when a -30 degree morning might come.

>shit breaks
>order replacement part
>swap it
You can just /diy/ everything. Except if nobody sells replacement parts, but even then, a new unit is probably cheaper than the repair bill.

Mitsubishi makes (overpriced) a2w units so that doesn't particularly change what I said.

If you’re installing it yourself it is worth it. A2L doesn’t really change much either, and again, if you’re installing it yourself you don’t have to do any of the dumb precautionary explosion proof shit. Get a Mr cool or whatever if you want it’s no skin off my back

I'd do mini-split heat pumps over traditional heat pumps.
>far more effiicient, control, and cleanliness
The advantages for centralized heat pumps are
>easier to repair.
