Its a samsung drive, I have tried cleaning the lense and used a very thin layer of white lithium to relubricate the laster parts, but it still wont read discs. I see the clamp at the top of the DVD drive is loose and moves around a lot, could that be the cause? Its been forever since i fixed an og xbox.

Try tweaking the potentiometer on the actual laser a little bit. If you don't have a multimeter, make a mark with marker and move the potentiometer like, a half millimeter at a time. Just barely a turn. Try not to go too far with it. If it isn't resurrected after moving it a full 2 millimeters, it's probably toast. You can try and look up the part number on the laser to find a replacement, but last time I tried on a Thompson drive on Ebay/Aliexpress, I didn't have any luck unlike PS1/PS2/Xbox 360 lasers. Don't know if anyone makes a new laser for the Samsung drives or not.

Me again, most of the time DVD lasers have 2 pots, one for CD and the other for DVD. You have to know which is which.

Yeah i was looking for my multimeter couldnt find it.

I also accidentally held the drive upright and the tray came slamming down too, maybe that misaligned the laser? My music CDs work but neither of the 2 games I have do either.

The discs kinda start n stop when its in the disc drive too, the spindle thing for the discs didnt seem that rough when i tried moving it though. I'll hopefully get my multimeter soon, adjusting the pots the last resort though

Yeah man, if it's reading CDs and not DVDs then it's likely it's going to need a pot tweak. I don't know offhand what the spec is so you're going to want to search around for a good video or something. It's been a while since I've had an Xbox. Best of luck anon.

Fair enough. Sucks ass looking for info now, maybe ill try that OG xbox forum for advice on the specs cause consolemods doesnt have it for the samsung drive sadly. I got this for a good deal but it was easier to fix these back in the day.

That might be the way to go. Can you see a sticker with a part number on the laser if you pop off the bottom plate? If so, can you post a steady pic? I'd just like to look around on ebay or aliexpress for shits and gigs.

only pick of the bottom I have, had to stop working on it for the night already spent too much on just the disc drive. At least none of the capacitors were leaking on my board yet.

I meant the back of the laser. Maybe post one up tomorrow if you have the time, if not I'm sure someone on the forum you were talking about could help you out more than I could. I'll bookmark the thread just in case. Goodnight and God Bless dude.

you cannot adjust align that without an oscilloscope and manual. the laser is probably burned out. toss it.

Don't I need to run tony hawk?

Could have or maybe the spindles gunked up with old grease. The drive wasn't opening because the laser rails were too gunked up from the old grease. The spindle moved a little rough when I tried earlier, but I can't look at it till Saturday or monday and the only lubricant I have is white lithium.

True, but the inside looked pretty clean, besides the old grease on the drive. Judging by the saves it doesn't look like it was used a lot. Gonna look at the spindle and regrease it. if that doesn't work then a pot adjustment.

sometimes the laser is done for. if the pot adjustment doesn't work i'd try finding a laser that matches the power specs on digikey or mouser.

Here's the back of the laser. I've tried relubing it and cleaning it again but no dice, now it can't even read music CDs. Finally found my multimeter gonna try a pot tweak

Scratch that, it just started working randomly. I ran it without the cover on to see if the laser even produces a light, now it's running discs fine.
