What would a realistic version of this design look like?

it was used as a small and light tractor to move howitzers around. typical German autism of "overengineer a new tool for every single possible scenario we encounter rather than repurpose stuff we've already got".

They already had those too, but those were for the radios.

Simple. The German empire didn't tax small bikes up to 200ccm, so most people had those instead of cars. Making a tank that handled similarly to a bike meant that just about any soldier could just get on and drive, without needing to understand that the front wheel wasn't actually doing anything, and that the steering happened by having the fork actuate the track's steering brakes.

You know those 6x6 atvs can am makes? They also make tracks for them. In principle, there's nothing stoping you from putting tracks only on the rear pair of wheels, and modifying the gearing on the front wheels to match, or just drive 4x6 all the time.

>Steering the Kettenkrad was accomplished by turning the handlebars: Up to a certain point, only the front wheel would steer the vehicle. A motion of the handlebars beyond that point would engage the track brakes to help make turns sharper. It was also possible to run the vehicle without the front wheel installed and this was recommended in extreme off-road conditions where speed would be kept low.

There's context you're missing; they had no stuff. All their good stuff got decommissioned due to Versailles after WW1. It's why everything was sort of a Swiss army knife; less stuff to manufacture in secret.

It had a diff, and this thing was pretty quick, it could do 50mph on road.
It was made to fit in the small cargo planes of the time and for Russian mud.

The engine in it was originally for a small car and extremely weak. Maybe some sort of jeep, even 4wd, but not a tank.

most people had motorbikes, but not cars, and definitely not tanks.
A tank that had all the operating elements of a motorbike (steering bar, throttle and brake on the right hand, clutch on the left) meant every random soldier could drive it, while a tank with operating elements like a car (steering wheel, pedals) or a more old-fashioned tank (levers and pedals) would have required specialized training.
With Germans, it was a great idea to minimize training through engineering. Of course, with people like you, it might not have sufficed.

You used AI to make a fake version of a real thing, and now you're surprised that when you ask for the real thing you get the same thing you started with?
