Put a bunch of chunks of oak in an old popcorn tin, stabbed a little hole in the lid and built a fire around it

I just built the fire around it with a bunch of punky wood and left it overnight, no rotating. It was entirely covered, yeah. There was a lot of tarry buildup around the hole, presumably where the moisture escaped

I cant find a metal bucket anywhere.
No one sells popcorn or cookies in one.
Menards only has a 20 gallon trash bin or gallon paint bucket.
No 5 gallon paint bucket
No smaller size tin buckets with lids.
Fucking trump and tariffs

yes if you want evennly cooked wood, no it shouldn't need to be rotated, heat penetration is the most important part

You can make a sod burn ir an open pit burn if you can't manage a retort, just make sure the wood is dry to reduce snoke if you have neighbours.

I bought a 5 gallon metal paint bucket, it's brand new. Has plastic liner and seal. Should I burn that off first, or wil it burn off clearly during the first batch?

cool, will do.

i did a test with a gallon paint bucket, now is it me, or maybe this scales better with a larger bucket. but ive used 8x the amount of wood to burn a fire for the small amount of charcoal that could fit in that gallon bucket.

does the wood used for charcoal matter? i got a ton of hickory, and birch.

I would use wood you'd traditionally cook with. Oak, hickory, mesquite, etc. IDK about birch.
