Yes, it's completely viable to replace a phone screen yourself. There is a plethora of youtube videos that show you step by step how to do it for just about every specific model of phone you might have. Also, there's a thread on this board for stupid questions.

I have never had good luck opening up iPhones and successfully getting everything back in place.
Depends what a pro place charges for it compared to materials, and also if you’re willing to go buy a new phone after you open it up and can’t get it back together.
The only ones I’ve taken apart, I was ready for a new phone anyway so I didn’t try that hard to reassemble all of it.

READ AND UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE THING before doing anything. if you think you won't be able to repair it by yourself, then just pay for a replacement.
you see, it won't be an easy task, so unless you don't have much money, it's always better to have someone do it, otherwise you might end up breaking something else and maybe even the replacement screen.
