Hey anons. I came back from a week long vacation to see that my main breaker tripped and the fridge was off for who knows how long. Luckily it was mostly empty because I planned ahead, but the freezer wasn't. I already cleaned it, but there's still a mild odor of rotten food in all rooms (doors were left open). Don't think anything absorbed it but I can give my blankets a wash to be safe. What do I do to get rid of the smell? How long would it take? The flat is about 70m^2, 175m^3. I can spend a few bucks on supplies but won't drop hundreds on hardware
leave it open for as long as you can, a few days if possible, ideally outside
Yeah, outside in the sunlight. The UV light will help. Also bleach + cold water.
Odors cling to textiles. Ozone helps: Protip: Do not occupy a room when an ozone generator is running in it.
Let it air out as long as possible, clean all interior surfaces with bleach, let it air out more. Then, put a box of baking soda in there since that's supposed to deal with smells.
Funny related story - I once worked in a teaching lab where they had a freezer full of mice carcasses for later use. While school was out for one summer, they shut off power to the building for renovations and that freezer and air conditioning were off for a few weeks. That freezer was still in use years later, and it was always a "drawing straws" situation to see who had to open it.
