Hey /diy/ I have an issue with mold in my HVAC and need advice. My family has been getting sick way too frequently and I noticed dust accumulated around a couple vents upstairs. I removed them to clean the dust and found mold in the duct board and drywall. I cleaned it and had a guy come out and he explained the mexicans who built the house did not properly seal the vents and boots from the attic where the HVAC is located. He checked the plenum and says he found mold there too. He is recommending we replace the plenum with a metal one and also wants to look inside the other intake boxes and check the coil.

I have been waiting for him to email me a quote since Thursday. I guess he is really busy. In the meantime can I just replace or repair these boots myself? I am pretty handy but its a matter of knowing what material to get and where to get it. I don't really want to put in new duct board as much as I would rather replace with a metal boot that goes all the way to the vent. Do they sell these at home depot? Any advice on the way to do this is appreciated. Also any recommendations on replacing the plenum with a metal one or not. Pics incoming.

Pic after I cleaned it. Should I cut back the drywall in the ceiling and replace it with plaster or something?

What is the inside water drain like? I bet it isn't draining right. My parents have a pump on theirs with a small tank. When the tank gets full the pump turns on. This keeps the line free of water at all times. Bet yours is filled with water.
