For the people here who have experience with using the Civitai lora generator, what's the upper limit of what's reasonable for making a lora? I want to make a style lora for an artist and I've got over 500 high quality PNGs, which I'm assuming is massively overkill. I know that the bare minimum for decent quality is around 40, so should I prune it down to my favorite 100?

Yes, around one hundred is a good amount. The fewer you have the easier it is to get the style locked in, but the more weird biases the lora picks up from having limited camera angles, backgrounds, poses, etc in the dataset. Plus it's hard to ensure quality of both images and captions if you have too many.

the bare bones is 32GB Ram and a CPU that won't bottle neck your 8VRAM GPU.

I have one of the shittiest nvidia cards ever made the 5060 with 8 GB GPU(which I don't recommend BTW get a 16VRAM model), you can expect for simple workflows like the ones default in comfyUI with 1 to 4 GB Models like SD1.5 to take like 50 seconds per picture, with heavier ones for 5 to 6 GB like NoobAI,Illustrious it will take about 1 min 20 seconds and in this one there is the lightest workflow ever NO UPSCALER, NO LORA's, NO ULTRALYTICS (AI that detects pieces of a picture like hands,face,body,pose,NSFW) you can make this somehow how with an extended NEGATIVE PROMPT LIST (the smallest the negative prompt is the better BTW)

Then for the big boy pictures like this I use a complex workflow stolen from civitAI with LORAS,UPSCALERS,ULTRALYTICS OF MULTIPLE SHIT and something like the pic I'm posting comes over this example was the fastest it took 200 seconds in layman's terms it took 3 minutes and 21 seconds, this pictures take around 3-5 minutes EACH.(PIC VERY RELATED)

FORGET ABOUT DOING VIDEO, the fanciest thing outside anime generation this you might be able to do might be a FLUX 1 Dev model, that looks mega realistic I do my own wallpapers in 1080p resolution and that is at the fastest 5 minutes per picture generated.

with 16GB VRAM you cut those waiting times IN HALF.

Unless you can get one of the shitty nvidia cards like the one I own with a multiple year warranty from your country consumer laws go ahead otherwise you are gettin scammed.

At some point I stopped looking at hands because I knew they would be a mess anyway so don't even bother.
Then simply by having five fingers the images were "perfect".

Now even whith the right amount of fingers I can't help but notice if there is a nail missing or if one of the fingers are in a weird position and think is horrible

I think Ragnarok Online is simply too inconsistent in artists depictions. With over 25,000 images on gelbooru alone I thought it would be easy but at best I get depictions of the wrong class mixed in with, I dunno what. I ask for an acolyte (ragnarok online) I get ... indescribable, I ask for priest I get boys, I ask for priestess I get some character from an anime or something? I ask for archer (ragnarok online) I get Archer from Fate, I ask for mage (ragnarok online) I get some non descript character. With all the images on boorus I thought Ragnarok Online would be easy but I guess there's too much variation as everyone has their own character they're drawing as a "priestess" or "mage" or whatever and there's too much crossover with other anime and games about what a "priest" is.

Ahh well. I think this is about the closest I got. Not what I asked for but after dozens of images I'll take what I can get; a high priestess walking down the road.

You need to avoid the generic term priest or priestess unless directly linked to ragnarok. It had a harder time with priestess, but based on the class sprites, it got very close.
