why perfumes even have opening notes and drydown, when usually, other people will smell only the drydown. even you will mostly smell the drydown, the 10-30 minute opening might as well be something else entirely.

Valid point. Perfumes are retarded like that. To be honest, the concept of fragrance is retarded as fuck: spending exorbitant amounts of money for a smell, for something that goes away entirely after time. So much work goes into creating something of sub-par value, regardless of how great or interesting it is. Fragrance is a meme that's barely justified, if at all. I love it but no bottle of liquid can be worth more than $200.

Got an old Mary Kay Tribute, an unapologetic masculine harsh green scent. Settles down into quite a sharp patchouli but lasts a long while. I like it even if it makes women recoil. My dad says it reminds him of the Old Spice he used to wear.

A few threads back someone asked for a scent they could smell through the grease and food smells of a restaurant kitchen and this will do it. It doesn't project too much but you will be able to smell it for most of a 9-5. It cuts through food smells and all those modern sweet feminine scents.

French perfumery is made like that, to satisfy the wearer and then later the people smelling you, it's part of its style and culture. Sadly it became another thing entirely as top notes are used by many cunning brands to sell you in the first 30 minutes and then fuck you up later, many """niche""" houses are like that and the nigger cattle sucks it, spending in very high quality top notes and then giving you literal pharmacy-tier drydowns.
German-style, aka Colognes, are another set of rules and American-style aka Aftershaves is another one although less cultured due to developing in less time and against a mental subset of selling.

Wrong, many essential oils can last all the way to the drydown but in a very subdued form. Because their initial impact might be too much they are then considered a top note, sometimes companies cheat and repeat them in middle and base notes.

Pretty generic and trendfaggy set of tastes but it's a start, i would also second Boss Bottled Night due to personal taste, it's a musky dry soft wood smell due to the birch but with a tonality of humidity with the violet leaf which is very very blanched, it's not the green ozonic note like in Fahrenheit or the sweet watery note in stuff like Born in Roma or Legend EDP, if anything it's violet flower with a bit of the leaf. The Night name is very misleading, it smells dewy like a spring morning, also ditto the bad performance sadly. A choice for men.
Seeing that you like homo sweet ouds i would also recommend Bottled Absolu, it's a smoky oriental with enough sweetness to consider it trendy, lasts a long while too.
Bottled Unlimited is also a nice addition if you don't mind shit-tier performance, it's a great freshie to use if you want something for 2 or 3 hours.
Bottled Infinite had a great lavender accord, damn good in my opinion, but it got reformulated not long ago and it doesn't perform as well.

Is there a good reference site somewhere that can help identify fakes when vintage hunting? I don't "do" vintages very often, but I hunted down a bottle of Rive Gauche. Examined the pictures as much as possible against different ones from other sellers, it looked alright, and the seller had a good rep (99.7%+). Took the chance and bought, and it arrived yesterday. Box looks fine, if a little dented (it is a 20yo bottle after all). Nothing seems off about the lettering, packaging, or bottle. Knowing that fakes can be hazardous I just want to be as sure as possible.

There was a website that had side-by-side comparisons of legit vintage Polo Green and counterfeit vintage Polo Green. It showed bottle proportions, shades of finishing, labeling being either embossed or glued, batch number placement and formatting, and more. Something like that would be awesome.
Anonymous No.18462029
>>18462024
No idea if there's a website like that, but it's probably fine as long as nothing seems suspicious compared to photos of real bottles. You can be as careful as you want, but anyone that buys vintage for long enough will eventually receive a counterfeit. Especially if you're blind buying without ever having smelled the real thing before. Keep in mind also that some "fakes" actually have legitimate bottles and boxes, but the bottle has been refilled with fake juice instead. At that point you'll never know unless you spray it somewhere and notice it seems off, which you could easily miss.

But now it makes me curious how come nobody has tried to replicate or dupe the original Drakkar, supposedly it was a late tarty lemon DNA which implies it was already quite different from its clean counterparts, as in it had 70's style of being more coniferous and mossy.

Cringe propaganda by the designer media machine, they can and usually have poor performance and quality compared but they aren't poisonous.
>Something like that would be awesome.
You are asking for very niche stuff, it's going to be hard to find something, your best bet is Raiders of the Lost Scent.
Also some details might not be obvious, for example Guerlain copies have superior labels than the cheapo original ones, but the caps are cheap plastic compared to the heavier ones from the real deal. Many bottles from the late 80's and 90's also had the batch numbers glued.

Rive Gauche sounds like a major pain in the ass to clone by a chinaman company, given that it's an aluminum bottle with glossy finishing.
The best way is to fucking try it desu, if it lasts for 6 hours and smells like a top-tier fougere it's the real thing. Put it in a paper strip if you are that homosexual, there it should last double so 12 hours.

>I was hoping for something a bit mossier and "damper" if that makes sense
It does, you are experiencing perfumery sans oakmoss, this topic has been touched way too many times but in short there's decent long-lasting pine 'fumes but they don't have that thing you are searching, at least not naturally. Polo Original is that thing but with ashtray tobacco, the most famous example.
I've never been in a pine forest but i have squished real treemoss on my hands in a small forest creek, something similar but with pine is an old bottle of Loewe Esencia, it has that smell but very faintly, the pine is also not sharp like floor cleaners but it is there.

Newer Loewe stuff in the rectangle bottles are way sharper and drier in my experience but they might be up your alley, if you want something more balsamic perhaps Agua Brava.

I will say that it smells pretty top tier right off the bat. Performance seems pretty decent as well for just one spray on the wrist. Good tidbit about labeling with the Guerlain example, though. Didn't know that fakes could out-do the real thing in some areas. As for fakes not being poisonous, I've heard stories about things like antifreeze being put in there and whatnot. Maybe it's redditor propaganda, but I am a hypochondric sometimes I will admit.

Targhee Forest by Rogue is meant to mix pine, sage, juniper, oakmoss, and lavender. Splash sample vials didn't give off the moss much, but sprayed from a real bottle was definitely mossier and damp. >Performance seems pretty decent as well for just one spray on the wrist
It strikes me that you already know your stuff, like anon said i think it's time to enjoy it because someone with 99.5% rep loses way more fucking with that than with a couple of phoney bottles.

>Didn't know that fakes could out-do the real thing in some areas
All the time, Euro packaging is done in China and glued by albanians and other undesirables in the motherland. Loewe is notorious for fucking with the quality in the newer bottles, their label has embossed letters but the paper is trashy.
Guerlain labels are famous at this point because the phoneys are way better, you can see the reverse graphics crystal clear and early original batches used cheap glue that smeared everything so they stopped doing it. But like most frag bottle designers know since the 2010's is that bottle caps are where the money and identity goes and the chinese screwed that up as the french have quite heavy caps, you can tell by hand measure only which is which as the original weights more than double. Because almost all frag companies use the chinamen as their suppliers they concentrated in doing the caps unique as any cloning company can request the bottles to the same supplier, hence why Temu and Etsy have incredibly similar Xerjoff bottles because they are literally the same. Guerlain bottles for example are the same, up to the machined atomizer details.

Dior and Chanel have small seal details inside the caps, problem is they use shit-tier ones in the testers so basically a real Chanel tester bottle is almost identical to a chinese one because they both use trashy plastic caps and these guys do not care about putting the note breakdown behind sometimes. All of this laziness is why most major brands do not make unique bottles anymore, even ones who were known by their designs like Cartier.
Anonymous No.18462063
>>18462050
>Are they actually worth the trouble?
Depends, in first world countries some frags are worth a ton of money, up to 150 to 200 normally and 400 to 600 in some weird cases. In the non-first world parts they cost the same if not way less, because discounters are a thing only in the US and western Europe some people can only access designers via contraband or paying full retail, old stock is seen as inferior due to lack of general education so old stuff gets sold by pennies especially when there's no feasible way to offload them.
Hence the polish and former yugo accounts selling rare bottles in Germany for not much money. Faceberg does have some small groups were oldfags and wine ladies sell their stuff for not that much money, stuff like Shalimar from the mid-80's for less than 100 euros is a steal for me although there's also the mentally ill french selling 90's Hermes colognes for 500.

Yes but no, indolic usually refers to indoles, chemical compounds that smell like white florals in full bloom when properly diluted.
Tuberoses, jasmines and orange flower (neroli) smell really strongly when still on the stick, like a very overripened citrus or a woman's very strong musk after waking up or musk from somewhere else.
Jasmine smells like spoiled red meat when emanating its full power, neroli smells like the stuff used in mothballs. Around these dates the orange tree throws their little white flowers and the scent of florals mixed with dead animals permeate the streets, supposedly it's so flies and other stuff go around and pollinate or do whatever weird fly shit they do to help them do whatever, it's awful in my personal taste but some ladies love it.
Jasmine when tried to be replicated on the stick realistically is quite indolic, foul when in extrait concentration, it is not so much animalic as it is fleshy and damp in the bad sense of the word.
There's also a specific point in which that smell gets confused with cigars and dry tobacco, it's used as such in 80's fougeres, particularly the first formula of Cool Water before being reformulated in the mid-90's and then taken out in the late 00's by Coty.

Polo Original
>cold
That's a new one, supposedly Davidoff for Men smells pissy, boozy and dry tobacco but it was discontinued long ago, germans still have a dupe for it.
Hugo Boss #1 pre-facelift smells pissy and sweaty with very little tobacco in the drydown, it's mostly honey.
Perhaps if you layer Polo with Boss #1, but all of these are warm, none are "cold" as you want them.

Millennials and zoomers will keep on using vanilla, cinnamon, sweet slop well into their 40s and 50s, right?
I can't believe guys almost reaching 40 still reach for overly sweet shit. They trash BdC (good, it is overpriced inofensive shit), but recommend Y edp or PdM Layton. "it is sweeter" as if that is a plus.
My brother in law hates any woody notes. Ok. Says he likes orientals. Well, ok, cool with spices. Then he actually gets one stronger with you and one valentino thing. Bro, you are 35 already.

Reminds me of food, and how the palate develops. Children cannot tolerate anything that isn't a sweet bomb until certain age. then, they like salty crap. but very rarely they like anything bitter. I would say a lot of people develop a taste for bitterness out of starting drinking beer.

"oh, women love this sweet sloppa". Imagine keeping yourself in prolonged adolescence because you want pussy approval. Pussy that never had a real father figure, and doesn't know what a man around 40 should project overall.

Humid and sweet, that's not an ashtray in my definitions, searching perfumes by notes land me only sweet oud bombs rather than the stuff i think you are searching. Unlike Rogue, Pineward really does use more oakmoss than IFRA allows. He states as much in his β€œAbout” section and I suspect it’s why he no longer ships internationally from his business website.

He doesn’t use this as a point of advertisement like Rogue originally did, either, just states it as a fact. I’m not saying he makes any oakmoss bombs, just that if you’re looking for some degree of real oakmoss beyond mixing up fragrances yourself, he’s one of very few options.

My exact quote from when I tested a sample is β€œWow, this opens as a photorealistic old 90’s cheap motel room, faded but very present cigarette smoke. I really can’t believe just how accurate of a smell this is, the scent of one thousand ash trays ground into cheap furniture over time.”

The best, or at least better than you’ve been given so far, explanation is that it comes down to concentration.
>Indole's scent is often described as a sharp, pungent, and slightly fecal or animalic smell. It can also be described as a musty, wet, and sharp-clean odor, sometimes compared to a combination of wet-dog, stale hot breath, and mothballs.
>In trace amounts, as found in white florals like jasmine, indole can contribute to a more floral and intoxicating aroma
Two different descriptions, same type of material. When it’s in high concentrations (like in human shit, because bacteria in your gut produce indoles) then it smells bad. When it’s in small amounts, it smells good/floral.

Too many variables, depends on what you're wearing and how strong the fragrance is. For strong fragrances I go for the insides of my elbow, for lighter ones I might go clavicle. If it doesn't last on skin I might even do clothes. Also depends if it's something intimate for myself or for others around me. For myself I would do chest, for others I might do nape or wrists.

Forest Collection hits a lot of his really good tree scents and Pastoral will be a good example of his work with hay. I’m confident you’ll find something you’ll enjoy, just remember to be mindful of the skin stain on the really dark juices. Haven’t tried his most recent iteration of Lime Cola yet, tell us what you think.
And you’re welcome Anon, enjoy!

It’s great, but with both it and the original EdT, the more I wear them the more I realize they’re not quite what I want. I want something with a little more… presence. And I don’t necessarily mean I want heavy scents, I’ve recently found a few lighter scents I’ve been enjoying, but the TdH line is just so, I don’t know, translucent. Absent. There’s a decent chance I may also go a little nose blind to the IsoE, but it’s more than that.

Got some samples of Equipage and Bel Ami to test and will likely replace my TdH with one of those two. Currently leaning Equipage but need more testing.

>>18463685
Agreed. I love getting discovery sets from legitimate, niche, artisanal brands just because there’s so much you can do in perfumery and it’s so varied. You can see overlap occasionally, which in and of itself is also interesting to me, like convergent evolution.

This is outside of /frag/ and more of a general /fa/ question, but do you think a loden wool jacket would match the aesthetic if a gentleman and outdoorsman? That's how I'm trying to style myself as an outward reflection of what I am. The forest dancer, the warm poetic gentleman, and the rugged adventurer.

Ehhh, I guess let me start by saying I don’t pay too much attention to /fa/ beyond fragrances. Not to say I don’t care about my appearance, but I make my own decisions mostly for myself, and how -I- think others will perceive me.

To answer your question, yes, I can see some people associating that aesthetic with β€˜outdoorsman’ but it’s going to be very hit or miss. I could very easily see people just generalizing it as British.

Bringing it back into /frag/ terms, are you wearing this for yourself, or for how you want to be perceived by others? You should wear things you enjoy for yourself because you can’t always predict how people will perceive things. One person may see an outfit as outdoorsman and gentlemanly, another may perceive it as homeless.

Mainly myself. I love the smells of nature - especially during spring and autumn and I know different parts of the US have their own distinct aromas. All pleasant and have rubbed off on me after a camping trip.
I have a Stetson fur felt hat with natural feathers in the band, definitely has more of a "western gentleman" thanks to the front pinch crown.

Also I'm Mexican, evidently I look like someone from Xinjiang to some people in Shanghai lmao. If I dress like this over there, apparently most would think I'm their equivalent of a cowboy

Does PdM not label their bottles?

I’ve always written them off as overpriced masstige, like Creed, and never even bothered to sniff any because of it. Then I was walking past the PdM counter in a department store and thought β€œYou know what, let me actually sniff these and make an informed opinion.” Walked up and went to grab a bottle of one of the popular names and none of them are labeled? How do they not get the Gatorade treatment and just call them the color of the bottle? Dark blue, green, orange, etc.

Kek. Yeah, see, if I were to see a Mexican/Asian looking person in a loden wool jacket I’d probably think it was part of a cosplay or possibly just trying too hard, can’t say for certain without actually seeing the whole fit. Personally I associate outdoorsman with lightweight LL Bean jackets, boots, and probably cargo pants or something similar, not much overlap with gentleman, but that’s just me.

Wear what you enjoy and find comfortable, let others form their perception of you based on their interactions with you.

I think the top and heart notes are stunning, I get a little leather, a little incense, all with an amazing blend of spices and jasmine. It conjures the name of the fragrance perfectly. I just don't like it on my skin after it gets to the ambery base, it's smooth but too much. I would love this as a cologne without the amber base even if it lasts less than 2 hours. As is it has amazing longevity and sillage which, as per usual, people can't uncouple from the scent itself.

I'm not familiar with the others.

people overthink hating on PdM. It's a bad company because their price point is insane, not because of the fragrances. It's their greed, and the fake history they use to justify their fragrance price. That's it. The fragrances are fine, and everyone would love them if they cost ~$120 each. Sedley is nice too; A sweet-candy aquatic. It's not complex or interesting, but it's nice sweet and clean.
>it's bad an incomplete
these are just meme words by fragrance nerds. and this is the only place where say nonsense like that.
>no I took a fragrance class and
those ideas of completeness were popular memes in the 50s to compose a very specific smell with very specific ingredients, most of which are now illegal. Sedley and 99% of modern fragrances don't apply.

It doesn't smell gross, I love it, but it's near unwearable for a man. I'm not saying it's masculine, but women can get away with more daring stuff whether it's clothes or perfume. 20% of the composition of Salome is a tincture of actual real animal shit and piss. I don't like when people gatekeep perfumes behind attractiveness (I remember when someone in this thread said you can't wear Black Orchid as a man unless you're really hot). However, you really would need to be a very attractive guy to wear Salome.
