You know the drill.
This is an accumulation of the Internet's wealthiest and most knowledgeable watch enthusiasts. You can take advantage of that fact by asking niche and very obscure questions, you can join us by posting wristshots, coffee, grail watches and anything in-between, OR you can simply asks us for recommendations and thoughts on X watch.
Keep it civilized, this is a gentlemans hobby after all.

What's this guy's deal?
Armani Chad here. I just ordered this alarm clock as part of my "life without smart phone" journey
It is radio controlled, works on wired electricity, and has batteries as backup (optional) in case the power goes off so you still get woken up
Pretty stoked about this. Feels very anachronistic, which always makes me happy

Bought a watch a few months ago and it already has some small but visible scratches. What's the deal? Do watches only last a few years before they start looking dinged up and horrible? Is the whole buy it for a lifetime thing a meme
>>18465376Nah it's just you being retarded and not buying superior watches made out of hardened steel. Which will actually last you a lifetime and beyond that.
>>18465038>older>mechanical>Credoryou can pick two and only two, Credor was quartz-only until the late 2010s.
And if you pick "older" then it can't be a good watch because these sucked. If they didn't, Credor would still be the designated "dressy quartz" line for Seiko.
>>18465397Credor exists as a pass-fail IQ test. If you even consider buying one of the non-Micro Artist Studio products (which like only make around 200 of per year) then youโve already failed.

>>18467101It's a timeless design that grows on you. It's acquired taste like every genta design.
>>18467540The catch is that it's just a Seiko.
No, really.
Credor before the late 2010s retooling of Seiko's corporate structure was a collection on par with all the other dogshit collections from the 2000s they killed off because nobody bought them.
You wouldn't see a Velatura or an Ananta from that same period for over a grand and ask "what's the catch" because you know what the catch is : it's an old Seiko that's not old enough to be vintage so nobody wants it.
"The catch" is that it should be three figures, not four because all it has over the regular Seiko autos of the time is three finishes decoration instead of two. That's it. The "Credor" 8L75 and Seiko 8L35 are identical aside from that. And that base is not high-beat, it's not one of the high power reserve calibers of the time, it's not slim, it doesn't have a free-sprung balance. It's literally just a Seiko architecture in a party hat.
>>18467645>a timeless design>that grows on you>It's acquired taste like every genta designthese are all contradictory statements, please go get your head checked for your own sake
>>18467690>t. never seen or held a credor in his life before.but hey, your internet-only knowledge is very good!
>>18467540That's how a watch should cost and there's not much hype behind it to inflate the price. I'd compare it to a modern Sinn 556 or Formex Essence 39
The movement is the same as GS's 9s55, but unregulated and with a simpler finish. (Which is hardly different from 4s15, which is identical to caliber 52 from the 70s). Probably will cost more to service anyway, because it's a Credor.
There are two styles of case: one with normal lugs and a strap, and the other with a weird semi integrated bracelet.
So yeah: the catch is: the watch is 25 years old, potentially has to be sent to Japan for pricey service and the bracelet is weird, if you like straps.

Brahs, I returned the g-shock because I am sure it was not new
back to square one with armani watch, although I realized that when I set the time correctly on my microwave and on my thermostat, I got a clock within reach usually, so I don't need a watch. I also got a clock on my IP phone which sits on the little table next to my sofa, I think Ideally I would like to have a large clock above or below my TV, because it's a bit inconvenient to read it off the ip phone in the evening
I also received and returned that alarm clock today, returned it because it seems it was not new, it's getting more and more common that amazon tries to dump used items on me as new, I wont order from amazon again, it sickens me
you may wonder why dont I just use my mobile phone as a clock and also as alarm, but it's because I realized I am addicted to doomscrolling at night in my bed, so I want to start breaking away from this shit
>>18467897So what makes a horse then? Is any thing that could tell time and you can wear on a wrist a watch?
>>18467882This really is it. If you're very, very serious about tracking your vitals and energy expenditure, like you're an actual athlete or survivalist or something, they can be useful. But there are way too many fat bitches wearing Apple watches to make this case. The truth is it's just trendy and they probably got it free or with some kind of discount with their phone and cellular plan. I don't think i've ever even seen these people looking at the time on their smartwatch because their phone is welded into their hands with their eyes glued to the screen at all times.
Tech addiction really is a fucking disease that needs to be mitigated somehow. I do my share of mindless doom scrolling but when it's time to do something else I can put the phone away and lock in. I have tons of people at work who, while working, are always on their phone and taking a call from someone on their earbuds and not paying attention to anything else. If they're running a machine or something they just press the button and let the machine do its thing while they're on the phone, if the machine fucks up they don't know about it until the machine stops, they call for help from a mechanic and they can't even describe the problem with the machine and their eyes never leave the phone while talking to them. They're like actual zombies, and it's scary for job security because clearly a literal trained chimp could replace them in their position and they don't give a fuck.
>>18467915Apple watch is just bought as an object of desire, a status symbol and all that, not very different from other watches if we are being honest here
>>18467918It's very different in a lot of ways. For starters a real watch actually looks good, and you can enjoy it for many years and not have to worry about it becoming a brick as software and hardware service life ends. Mechanical watches are actually cheaper in the long run I'd say.
>>18467922well yes, but an apple watch does not cost 1000's of dollars, it's more a flavor of the month type throwaway item
>>18467901Lovely, which one do you wear the most?
you are not a real man. your "hobbies" center around purchasing and taking pictures of things, not creating things or participating in any sort of activity. a gearhead, a woodworker, an electronics hobbyist you'd never find on a place like this, maybe a web1.0 forum.
watch collecting is a hyper-materialist reddit hobby just like fountain pens, mechanical keyboards, funko pops, gaming mice, audiophilia etc. empty bugmen, empty souls, empty wallets, rich 'swedish' jew.
>>18467934Your "hobbies" seem far, far worse.
"small-souled bugman" implies that the person has been cut off from their cultural roots, and totally subsumed into consumerist neoliberal hive. they are totally lack any sort of sympathy for their ancestors folkways, higher spirituality, or passion. if they do engage in activities that are somewhat human, they still are heavily tinged by global capitalism. if they are a sportsfan, they will participate heavily in fantasy sports(which is obsessed with statistics, 'scientific' analysis of performance). if they exercise, it will be all cardio, and tracked by fitbit and then uploaded to faceberg. tastes in food, art, music, movies are predetermined by review aggregator sites like yelp, metacritic or rotten tomatoes. political views only appeal to them if they seem 'rational,' and derived from the sort of conventional wisdom, economics influenced worldview seen in works like 'moneyball', nate silver's 538 blog, and 'freakonomics.'
the small-souled bugman promotes awareness about climate change and praises exponential, unidirectional growth. he stands up for the rights of oppressed women and "sex workers" and torrents HD POV ultra-close-up pornography. he corners VCs at TED Talks to tell them about his drone delivery app and doesn't know how to talk to a mechanic.
he tweets safe opinions under his full name. he vapes artisinal medicinal cannabis, gazes at jpegs of nebulas and ponders the wonders of the universe.
he scoffs at miracles and strives to be the most rational, the most right, the most ahead. he never watches things grow and never watches things die.
Redditors are prime example of bugmen.
If the Redditor has hobbies, they are defined by purchasing and consuming products rather than creating something. A person who woodworks almost definitely doesn't post about it on Reddit - they are usually pretty well-adjusted people who picked it up on their own, took a shop class, or was introduced to it by a friend or family member. They may post on a web 1.0 woodworking forum like this one. The same goes for electronics hobbyists, gearheads, and so on.
What is a Reddit hobby, then? The best example is collecting mechanical keyboards. I cannot for the life of me understand these people. They literally spend thousands of dollars on keyboards. I can even understand why Black people blow $4,000 on a subwoofer for their jalopi, but why do you need to spend over $200 on a keyboard? This is a secret for those with advanced tastes finely sculpted by months of quietly observing Reddit karma counts, such as the bugman. Another example is the fountain pen sub, the male fashion advice sub (the advice is in the sidebar, the posts are mostly city dwelling nu-males discussing Uniqlo button downs), and to some extent the audiophile sub. Redditors also love Tesla automobiles far more than the luxury cars offered by traditional automakers like BMW, Audi, Acura, Lexus, etc., mostly because they don't know much about traditional cars in the first place and Teslas are more or less glorified appliances to begin with. This isn't unique to Redditors though, an important litmus test of a Small Souled Bugman is their opinion on Teslas. If they gush over them while also criticizing traditional luxury carmakers, you've got a Grade A+ Bugman on your hands.
Ah shit, the threadโs getting Credorโed up again.

I am a complete novice when it comes to anything time piece related. I do want to get something of quality and is durable for the stuff I do. Mainly fishing, swimming, lot range time, and hiking
Don't like excessively gaudy stuff
>Within $1k
>None
>Water resistant, impact resistant, date, maybe multiple time zones (I deal with the entire North American market as part of my job)
>Leather strap - I'm sure I'll find something exotic later on like stingray leather later on

i adore the look of this watch dude. simple, durable, utilitarian. where can i find something that DOESNT TICK THIS FUCKING LOUD
>>18468361Quartz only? Bulova released a field watch that looks along these lines, a bit smaller. I held it in person and itโs nice, a tad smaller in width than this Timex and also a bit thick (13mm?) but I liked the crystal a lot more. Otherwise if you want the simple analog clock aesthetic at the same quality of the Timex and also quartz, you could buy literally any watch from Walmart or temu and it would be as good
>>18468345Do you think you deal with enough different time zones in a day to justify a worldtimer watch?

are Casio smartwatches good?
>>18468534the features and display visibility are very good
The Cubitus, really, is a test. It's here to check your design litteracy. To a simpleton, it's just a big ugly square that kinda looks like a Nautilus (the only Patek he knows).
To the horologically educated, the multireferencial intertext of the watch is overwhelming and yet another proof of the genevoise maison. The curvature of the vertical edges is alchemical on several layers (squared circle, transformative Work of a prime element into its sublimized form and elevation, mutual acclimatation of opposites further seen in metal textures, the list could go on) ; the sizing is strict numerology (45 rpm, another circular reference ; hexagonal number pointing to the elegance in the simplicity of the square compared to the OTHER geometric watch with hexagons ; 45 in the enneagram points to the strength of individuality that will generate envy among those on the outside [non-owners])
I've become increasingly cognizant of where the goods I buy are made, which is why I'll stick to rolex and moser. The anons who mentioned Japan's loose manufacturing origin standards are correct bc most (grand) seiko products are from China with only their higher end stuff 100% from Japan.
The reason so few Rolexes are posted here is because, once a man buys a Rolex, he realizes he's solved watches and leaves. He may drop by every now and then to check up on /wt/ but he'll never waste his time posting here at every hour of every day.
But anyway, I hope you guys have a fun thread. I'll be back in a couple of weeks or so to see if there's any fun new memes.
>>18468587Then why would you go vor Rolex when they still use the scam that is the Swiss Made label?
Give proper tracing instead of "we just DO make everything in house, even our steel, just trust me bro we wouldn't lie to you, we weren't involved in the push to have the Swiss Made label be 50/50% instead of 60% swiss 40% offshore because that would have been better for our profit margins, we're totally better than that".
Give me Moser's hallmark, Nardin's commitment or the Fleurier quality stamp or give me nothing at all.
>>18468592What makes moser better?
>>18468601Nothing. Literally just marketing hype. You either fall for it or you donโt.
>>18468601Moss tries to distract you by saying
>we [meaning another company that our parent company owns] even make our own mainsprings!implying other companies donโt also do the same, while ignoring any questions about anything else they make.
The only Swiss company that truly makes everything in house is Rolex because they bought all of their parts suppliers.

>>18465411If I like Credor, but can't afford an Eichi 2, what do I buy?
>>18465848Very elegant watch. Is this the GCAR965? Can you give me a quick review? Looks like they're going for about $2.5k, is that a good price?
>>18468713>Whoretadello shamelessly samefagging to make it seem like literally anyone is interested in his shitters
>>18468713If you like the Eichi then you just like dress watches because it's really just that except Seiko is trying to convince you Kusoyama Kimoiimaru San needs ten thousand hours to paint the dial because each stroke of the brush takes an entire work day.
You can look for quite literally any enamel dial swiss dress watch and you'll have just about the same thing except you'll be able to get it serviced without sending it to Japan. And you'll get it for a much better deal too : you can find some VC Patrimony for fairly good prices considering the gold cases, and with twice the movement compared to whatever Seiko comes up with.
>>18468715I don't know who Whoretadello is. I come from fit/biz/g and just started lurking here like a week ago. Nice to meet you.
>>18468723>Iโve been here a weekAnd you didnโt figure out in that time that this is NOT the place to discuss watches? You must be carrying a few extra chromosomes.
>>18468713>If I like Credor, but can't afford an Eichi 2, what do I buy?Re-read the post you replied to. If you cannot afford the only Credor worth buying, buying any other Credor is just retarded.
>>18468718>>18468726Similar to this, which is $10k. I see a few uglier VCs in the $5k range. I think the Credor looks just as good but is 4x cheaper. Why exactly is it not worth it? Any other reason besides the "Swiss > Japan", "mechanical > quartz" memes?
>>18468725I'm aware of the other thread, but this one already has some Credor discussion.
>>18468734The meme is Credor itself.
Credor was at one point the thin/dress watch collection for Seiko with slim quartz movements, which did not impress anyone and sold very, VERY poorly (which is why you find them for peanuts now).
Then it became the part where they shoved all their leftover movements as they were planning to move upmarket and started gradually discontinuing a lot of quartz models. That era of Credor - mid 2000s to late 2010s - is basically Seiko moving all the movements that weren't good enough for their current lineup and the Grand Seiko calibers that were completely phased out due to GS becoming its own entity with its own caliber catalog. You're quite literally getting sloppy seconds from the entire Seiko group with these.
Then Credor was retooled into the higher end of Seiko, to be over Grand Seiko. This is the ongoing process and started with the Eichii.
So the reason it isn't worth it is because Credor in pretty much all cases, should be half the prices you can find because they're either okay quartz watches that are mostly dated now, or cobbled leftovers.
Prices have risen because of the Eichi. You can now convince some suckers that they are buying a mini-Eichi for a fraction of the price and not a frankenSeiko for twice what it should cost.
Buy any other dress watch. For your own sake.
>>18468757Thanks, appreciate the history lesson. If you consider the 8J movement as a "mostly dated, ok quartz", what do you consider "top of the line" quartz?
>>18468734Itโs a machine-made, steel-case watch with a quartz movement. In what world is that worth more than a hundred dollars?
>>18468587>>18468592>>18468604>>18468623I prefer my watches made in china; I'd rather support some chinese milf with F cup titties than some swiss weeb with a flat chested androgynous wife that's probably into scat play
>>18468713Can you afford Credor Kuon?
>>18468757Yeah, it's BS. In the 80's a lot of Credors were marketed as jewelry with precious metals and stones. Old steel quartz Credors are affordable now, because there's not enough hype outside of Japan for them and they're quartz.
While finishing was rarely on the level of Grand Seiko, movement argument is weak as well: all non-complicated movements from mid range Alpinist with 4s15 all the way to high end 9s55 were essentially the same movement based on the Daini 52 from the early 70s with different levels of finishing and adjustment. Those were later phased out by 4L25 variations in the 2010s Guess what the modern High-beat 9s86 is based on?
And what about Credor's 6S chronograph series? Is it sloppy seconds too? Well TAG Heuer didn't think so and paid out of their ass to acquire the rights to it.
>>18468823The Kuon design doesn't do it for me (not a fan of the white face and steel bracelet combo) and the ~$8k price tag is a bit too much for my budget (I'm shopping around in the $2-4k range).
For me, the Eichi 2 is grail tier, but anon's GCAR965 has similar design philosophy and elegance for 20x less price (it's also thinner, which I prefer). If I'm not deep into the "mechanical movement" boomer circle jerk and I'm not insecure enough to care about "brand hype", I consider this pretty good value for money (but am open to hearing alternatives if any of you have additional recs).
>>18468896Well, if you're into porcelain dials, it's the Seiko's shtick. There are more affordable watches in the Presage line. But consider this: all of those from $1K Presage to $50K Eichi are ~40mm in diameter and all dial. They will look like Ming dynasty plates on your wrist. IMO that quartz Credor without porcelain is much better proportions wise.
In your price range I'd suggest taking a look at Zenith Elite and Omega DeVille Prestige lines. A ton of models were made during the years, so you might find something that speaks to you.
Are Chinese watch makers still in the past compared to Japanese?
Any brands of note?
New project watch I got. Couldn't find the manufacturer mark under the balance wheel, but I think it's some Venus. Movement is bit banged up, but probably not too bad wear-wise. Parts stick from dead oil, but it has the smooth column-wheel action you can't find in affordable chronos nowadays. Case is all stainless steel, no plated crap.
Things to do:
>movement service, replace blown-out parts, if any
>crystal replacement
>case ultrasound cleaning, plus some light polishing
It has fixed bars, so strap options are kinda limited. Ideas? I'm not sure if I wanna basic-bitch NATO it.
>>18468958Oh yeah, also definitely needs a new crown and pendant tube, whatever's on it now is definitely nigger-rigged.
>>18468958Dogma nuts :DDDD
>>18468928Thanks anon, I'll take a look at those. Do you have thoughts on mechanical vs quartz? I'm new to watches and while I can appreciate the engineering behind a nice mechanical movement (and would like to get a nice skeleton one day so I can actually fawn over it), it seems like quartz is stigmatized because it's "those damn computers". I'm curious how much of this is marketing bullshit put out by the old guard (of which I see a lot in the watch enthusiast community).

6S was released in 1998, developed at The Shinshu Watch Studio where they only make Spring Drive and 9F now and put first in a Credor and never a Grand Seiko. They had to bring watchmakers out of retirement to make it and it's one of the best chronograph movements made. Tag Heuer ended up buying it

Looks like I havenโt missed anything in the last few weeks. Iโll be back in a few days to see if you guys are still having fun.
>>18468713Quick review.
It feels thinner than the suggested 6.9mm.
The strap needs some break in and might be too shiny for some.
The case and markers are black polished, which is more than what you can ask for at that price point.
The dial looks like a creamy porcelain at times and whenever you take a closer inspection, you find nice surprises.
Movement is a HAQ so you only need to change the time during winter/summer time change (if that's a thing in your country).
My only problem is the current price. I bought it two years ago, Tax free for 25% less than what the current MSRP suggests. Credor upped their prices a lot in these past few years.
Overall, I don't think you can go wrong. It's a beautiful watch that Does get attention from people in the know and even those who don't.
