/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - COLLECTION EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good

I bought a pair of Red Wing boots that were downright painful because I fell for the whole "they will stretch" bullshit they told me at the store.
Took them back at the store to get stretched three times and while they have gotten better , they still hurt when wearing, according to the store they cannot be stretched further.
Do I keep trying or do I just accept that I've been had and eat my losses?
Mind , these were shoes that were so tight I couldn't even make proper steps when I first wore them.

Really just give up. Life is too short to be dealing with painful footwear. Best is to take this as a lesson with tuition fee, buy a Brannock device and learn your actual size, then use that to inform your future choices.

Salesmen tend to size you down because it's a circlejerk of customers thinking that they need to size down, and salesmen want to make the sale rather than go against you. Some of these salesmen actually believe it though, so you get the diatribe that you encountered.

Just be glad that you're not one of those people with 10+ boots all the wrong size but refuse to admit that they've sized wrong because they're in too deep.

Did a Brannock device hurt you or something? There are alternative foot measuring devices but given that Brannock is so widely used the advice around sizing up or down for a particular boot or shoe last is relative to Brannock.

If you don't want to buy one, then you can use one in store, but I think it's useful to own one because you can use it at your own convenience whenever you want, and with different socks, rather than going to a store every time.

Brannock devices are also cheap compared to the loss made on getting your size wrong.

Don't need the device to accurately measure feet. Piece of paper against the wall is good enough for length. For width just step on a ruler. All of the brannock measurement tables are available online so you can compare against those if you really want to know your brannock sizing.

Yeah, they actually measured my feet with a Brannock and went down half a size from that.
Well, it is half a size too small as intended, only lengthwise as well, which means I can't feel my toes if I walk in them for a few hours and of course that part doesn't stretch.
>Some of these salesmen actually believe it though
The guy talked about the shoes potentially ending up a bit too large as if it was the worst thing that could possible happen, so that was probably the case.Which is utterly retarded, you can fix shoes that are just a tiny little bit too big , but just a tiny little bit too small will still wreck your feet.

>Best is to take this as a lesson with tuition fee
Yep, thats what this is unfortunately. And to also take the time to rtesearch boot brands, sizing, lasts boot types etc. before spending this much money again. And no more Red Wings, everythigng would be fine if the cunt would have brought me another pair to try on like any normal shoe store instead of pretending to know shit he obviously doesn't.

>Yeah, they actually measured my feet with a Brannock and went down half a size from that.
All numbers from a Brannock measurement should be used to guide your decision for a particular last, but it sounds like this salesman just took a number and gave a generic recommendation.

Too often people only look at the larger number of the heel-to-toe and heel-to-ball, and disregard everything else including the width. Then they try a last that doesn't fit their width, and still size up or down as if it did fit their width, when in reality they may need to go further up or down.

For example, people with an EE width foot can wear a Viberg 2030 in the standard E width, but typically take half a size larger than someone with an E width foot, and do so with the knowledge that other parts such as arch support may be compromised a bit for the sake of having more width at the ball. Someone with a large disparity between their heel-to-ball and heel-to-toe may even need to size even more differently.

All measurements should be considered, rather than watering them down into a single number. For example, if your heel-to-ball is longer than your heel-to-toe, then a boot may fit your length perfectly but have worse arch support than a boot that's a larger size.

Boots and shoes should never be uncomfortable in store, because it will only get worse over regular wear. However, unfortunately a boot or shoe may be comfortable in store, but after several hours of walking, turn out to be uncomfortable.

>but it sounds like this salesman just took a number and gave a generic recommendation.
I actually went to their flagship store , trusting that I would get a good consultation considering the price tag.
What I didn't expect was that I would have to actively pick a fight with the salesman and assert myself without having a clue of boots.
What I didn't know is tha apparently a bunc hof their customers are into that shit, as the yguy tried to sell me my foot pain as some kind of gay rite of passage to prove how manly I am. Apparently boot salesmen are utter dogshit and should never be listened to, I never had anything like that happen even when buying in dirty cheap outlets.
Anyhow, what are godo alternatives to Red Wing Beckmans? I like the look, but obviously I'm never buying anything from them again.

>What I didn't expect was that I would have to actively pick a fight with the salesman and assert myself without having a clue of boots.
You have a very reasonable expectation, but as you've experienced very early, it's not going to be met.

I shop luxury and MTO/bespoke often and you'd be surprised how many salesmen don't really know what they're talking about, even at that level. Most of them aren't like that on purpose, though some are purposefully standoffish (Edward Green is notorious for this), which some people like.

However things still just work out because most of the clientele for that price bracket know exactly what they want and know exactly what they're talking about, and are used to asserting themselves in general life and business.

Sometimes you come across a salesman with an excellent eye to detail and really knows their stuff. When that happens customers tend to request that person's sales service in particular. But otherwise, you must keep in mind that retail staff in general are not renowned for critical thinking or off-piste discussion that isn't in their training.

I've read that a lot of red wing employees basically advice people to get the smallest size you can get without your toes hitting the front of the boots though. So basically find the size where your toes hit the front and then go up half a size. That is probably like at least a full size down from brannock, not the regular half side down from brannock.

I had to get a width up, but they didn't charge the MTO fee since I wasn't changing anything on it. It's the 64 last, and unfortunately I don't have any other Edward Green to compare against.

This is normal creasing on my Red Wings right? I just got these this past week and I’ve been wearing them in slowly, and the creasing on my left is much more pronounced than my right. I’m pretty sure it’s not loose grain or whatever because I’ve read that’s rare. Also, because it’s probably relevant, my left foot is larger than my right by about a half size. Besides that there’s no other creasing anywhere on my boot, just wanted to make sure this pair is copacetic.

yeah, it's just ugly creasing. you win some, you lose some.
uninformed people (especially on r*ddit) love to say "hurr durr it's lose grain!" but they don't actually understand what lose grain is, they're just parroting what they read other uninformed people say
loose grain is when the leather is de-laminating and separating. that is bad. you can feel it if you rub the leather together. it's often accompanied by really bad ugly creasing, hence uninformed retards assuming bad creasing is always loose grain
but no, creasing is just creasing. all leather, no matter how cheap or expensive, how fancy and nice or how crappy, will crease. it's how leather works. (cordovan does not crease, it rolls, but those "rolls" are still creases, just super tiny micro ones so it appears like it's not creases)
just wear and enjoy your boots, anon. no one will ever notice or care but you, and the more broken in and worn they get, the less you'll notice and you won't care

It's become trendy to shit on them in the past couple of years. I think it's generally unfair.

I would not say that they are good value. But if you want a comfy good looking chelsea boot they are good imo.

I have a lot of comfort craftsmans and craftsmans and find them comfy in the office and around town.

Sizing aint easy. They will soften a touch but won't really stretch they the fit around the heel, instep, ball and toes should be ok from the start. As the leather eases it gets easier to take off and put on.

I sized up a bit so the instep felt comfy and wear with thick merino wool socks.

Comfort craftsman (poron in sole, rubber outer sole, leather upper) are definitely more comfortable than craftsman (full leather)
Anonymous No.18475884
>>18475604
I did, had the comfort craftsmen in chestnut. If you have feet over E width they won't work, and if you're approaching the upper part of an E width they're going to be tight. The last is also very long, to give it that sleek look. I honestly wasn't a fan of how long the shoe was. QC was good, if I had to nit-pick the final stitching around the goring wasn't great, but they did it on the inner side of the boots and pants covered it.
