People then, as some do now, still wear raincoats and trench coats, but single-breasted macintosh style raincoats are more generally seen if one is wearing traditional rain-wear meant to be used over a suit or sports coat, or similar. Double-breasted trench coats were definitely popular during the early through mid-20th century, and they still get worn by some now, but even less than the single-breasted coats, in my experience of looking at people in cities during rainy weather. If you want to wear any sort of rain or trench coat, make sure it fits well, but still loosely enough so that it could go over a suit or sports jacket beneath. This same principle applies to overcoats. Hats are optional, but quite helpful during rainy weather. A good quality felt hat is going to save your arms getting raised to hold an umbrella all of the time, and it could look good with suits and sports coats, too.
