/wt/ watch thread. The Watch Thread
Let's summon OmegaDrunk.

You know the drill.
This is an accumulation of the Internet's wealthiest and most knowledgeable watch enthusiasts. You can take advantage of that fact by asking niche and very obscure questions, you can join us by posting wristshots, coffee, grail watches and anything in-between, OR you can simply asks us for recommendations and thoughts on X watch.
Keep it civilized, this is a gentlemans hobby after all.

The guy who recommended the Sinn was 100% on the right track. Buy a watch with a hardened or titanium case so it doesn’t get trashed in a couple months from rubbing against building materials. A few good options to check out (in descending order of price point) would be anything from Sinn, anything from Damasko, an Archimede Outdoor (any model) or 200 series, a Dekla Turbulenz with 6steel case, or a citizen attesa in titanium.
You could also go real cheap and disposable by getting something like a timex or Casio f91w or a159wa-nijh

The star in the triangle? It's just an early indication that the indices were applied, used on the 8970 model which wasn't produced very long. That and the Seikomatic logo (the spinning gyro thingy above the Seiko logo) disappeared with the 8971, but, there were still 8971 models being made equipped with a 8970 dial.
So we have:
8970 dial in a 8970 case
8970 dial in a 8971 case
8971 dial in a 8971 case
All are supposed to be legit, i doubt there would be that many spare 8970 dials around to warrant that many mismatched watches. Plus i personally have a mismatched watch (dial says 66-9880 case says 66-9990) and it's not uncommon.
Anonymous No.18483647

This is the first Weekdater, model J13080. There exists a variant with all the indices the same length. There's also a variant with black 30 instead of blue.

Can someone please explain to me how Rolex collecting actually works? Why do people go absolutely crazy for mass-produced Pepsi/Starbucks/Batman "dive larp" garbage, while an understated, classy as fuck rare vintage DJ in pristine condition is only like $5k? Do people just have absolutely no taste?

Also, the highest ever Rolex sold at auction is $17 million for some cheesy old actor's weirdo daytona. But the watch of a WW2 general, and fucking US president, which he wore daily for >35 years, doesn't even break $500k? What the hell is wrong with people?

Actors are hands down the most soft and coddled men imaginable. It's not like it requires any particular talent, literally anyone can do it. Then, once you're rich, it's not hard to participate in an activity that only takes money to be good at.

Contrast that with the most powerful military operational commander of all time who would later become one of the most successful US presidents of all time. Eisenhower is the leading subject of dozens of historical biographies, Newman was cheap tabloid fodder for boomers. Absolutely no question as to who I'd rather be.

It's my first luxury watch purchase and I don't intend to buy anything more. I just want a great daily driver that I can wear to every occasion.

The IWC just seems more delicate? And I love the arabic numerals. I don't have much trouble reading it but it takes me a second or two to tell the time without any hints.

Portuguiser is an oversized dinner plate looking shitter. Speedmaster looks and feels better AND is a historic piece. You made the right choice. Don't let weird contrarianism give you buyers remorse. People might say it's boring because everyone has a speedy and a portuguiser would be a more individualized piece for the collection, but the reason everyone has a speedy and nobody has a portuguiser is because the speedy is great and the porty isn't.

If you do it every morning you only have a couple of twists to do. It's not that long. I don't mind, really.

Wearing a tool watch to a formal event is a bigger disappointment than your watches matching. If you were all wearing the same datejust or constellation or tank or calatrava that would be fine, they're good watches AND appropriate for the occasion.

I don't know about everyone's morning routine but for me personally. If I woke up and had breakfast with my wife every single morning and I wore the watch to work it wouldn't be so bad, I'd enjoy the days when I could wind the speedy while we're having coffee and pastries for breakfast. But I work in the morning and she has a schedule where she works in the afternoon and evening every day for a week and then she's off for a full week, so on her work weeks she sleeps in while I get ready and go to work and then isn't home when I get home, so we don't really have a time where we just sit and chill those days. I just want to throw my work watch on, got to work, come home from work, throw a play watch on and play, then go to bed when she comes home.

That kind of plays into why manual wind is so great for special occasion dress watches. If you only wear a watch for a day or two at a time a couple times a year you only have to wind it once before you put it away again. It's not a problem at all. But I guess our great grandpas made it work.

Does the speedmaster make big notable clicks when winding? I have the new seamaster reissue and I notice that you can't really feel the clicks and you have to put your ear close to hear it. It's pretty smooth unless you wind it over max and the spring starts slipping(it's automatic) then you can hear and feel it and know to stop. Maybe the speedmaster has more going on.

I like that stuff, but like I said sometimes you're just preoccupied and don't want to take your watch off and fuck with it, maybe you forgot to wind it yesterday and it died and you don't want to fuck with setting it, etc... Eventually

Yeah I've seen a couple of them and other models as well with the same kind of patina, it seems that if they have encountered moisture early in their life the layers of lacquer began to fade. I've seen golden, pink, reddish and even purple dials, often starting in the center.
>but I don't like the case as much, the lugs and screwback makes it float over my wrist.
Yeah it is a bit more hefty, it doesn't taper in as well the 8990 does. It does have a small concave section just below the flanks that i only noticed yesterday. I love the sharp lugs so much though, very similar geometry as the Heuer Carrera, the whole case is similar.

Can someone identify this watch please? It's not any Breitling I could find, but it has a very similar bezel to older Breitlings, and obviously the two digital screens.

you know dive watches are a meme right? Just get a Casio f91w or the slightly upgraded version with a better backlight and use a dive computer if you really need that kind functionality. Divers don't wear dive watches they wear cheap ones that work

Wearing a dive watch while diving = literal larping

Wearing a F91w while gooning = based and legitimate alpha behavior.

You can wear a dive watch sure but it's an outdated method of keeping track of dive times. Any diver thats serious uses a dive computer. a cheap Casio will be just fine at any depth that's safe to dive at and you don't have to shell out more than 20 bucks for it. win-win imo, why overspend unless you want to signal to other people that you dive. just be honest with yourself anon, it's fine.

if you wanna get into the weeds about it a cheap diver isn't a good choice either. Most divers wear a dive computer as I already said, and something like a smartwatch or a G-Shock as a backup in case the computer fails. No one wears mechanical watches for diving anymore unless you're a watch enthusiast. And if you are, any Seiko diver or other watch like it will be just fine. And saying it's a backup is mostly just so people don't look at you like you're crazy for wearing one. I just say Casio because chances are you aren't going to need it if you just want a watch that will survive the water. But if you want to buy a diver and say you went diving with it, buy whatever you like and don't pretend it's for utility. It's for the flex. I have nothing against dive watches, just people who won't admit it's for the style points.

I'm not sure but I searched for like 3 hours for all possible vintage Breitlings and couldn't find it. That was the first thing that popped to mind. I'm not seeing a Breitling winged logo anywhere, and I couldn't find a single one with just 3 and 6 so I don't know.
