/frag/ - Fragrance General #1190
Going to post this over here.
I have access to a rare discounted Allure Homme Sport. It is a modest one but it's at a store so no shipping. That being said, I can still get a same sized bottle of Versace Pour Homme off of a discounter, add shipping and it's slightly over a third of the price.
I didn't test VPH's drydown but at least in the opening the creaminess of Chanel was more gripping. Some have said that even a well-trained nose won't tell the difference in the air. Is it worth sinking the extra dough into a 20 year old fragrance?

I just sprayed a bit of mine (vintage bottle with a long metallic plastic cap). Earthy patchouli, musk, oakmoss, and an animalic leather vibe at the base. If you like stuff like classic Polo it's worth trying. I like smelling old stuff like this but I can't imagine wearing it until I too am old.

>Davidoff Cool Water
5/10
You get what you pay for. I expected more marine/watery from this. Thankfully I got 75ml not 100. After a while it smells like plastic dolls. Disgusting.
>Hermes H24 Herbes Vives
6.5/10
It's alright, which isn't necessarily good for a fragrance, to be just alright. Smells better after the opening with some interesting nuanced notes starting to show, but by then it's on way to being a skin scent.
>Lalique Encre Noir
5.5/10
Nothing special. Inky, as the name suggests, with cheap earthiness. You also get "plastic handle of the pen" notes which is barely better than plastic doll part notes.
>Final Thoughts
Top kek. That these fragrances are sold and celebrated in any way is mind boggling to me. I ordered these to distract me from using up the more expensive bottles I thoroughly enjoy and covet. You get what you pay for. The first and probably last time I invest in poorfag frags. I am particularily in awe how much praise Cool Water receives, regardless of how "new" it was in 1988. You get what you pay for.

/frag/ tends to rightfully shit talk Cool Water, Encre and even H24, so /frag/ is not always wrong. I had it coming but I was more than prepared for it. But yes, never EVER listen to anyone but yourself. Explore for yourself and ignore all the bulging basedjak videos that worship piss liquids, ignore all the fucking fragrantica comments praising piss liquids, ignore the fake ratings. The only rating that's real is one's own. Explore for yourself and only yourself, not on behalf of consensus opinion.
The satisfaction of curiousity regarding these memefrags alone was worth it for me, but I could've paid a fraction to satisfy it.

Also think /frag/ is a bit harsh towards Bleu de Chanel, whose only flaw is its popularity. I need to smell it again just to confirm that though.

What do you mean, like your pristine glass bottles getting greasy because of your body oils? If that is it then you just have to get used to it, I usually spray after a shower so my hands are clean but any time I want to test something later on it's going to get greasy. Other than washing your hands you can use a cloth to wipe them down. Bottles getting regular use are going to get filthy, the only people with clean bottles are shills.

Yeah, very disappointing. It's such a dull, uninteresting, uninspiring, chemical dill-water scent to me. There's nothing refreshing about it. Nothing enjoyable or aesthetically pleasing. If I had to guess, this Christine Nagel boomer never walked in nature a day of her life. Maybe she inhaled nature's scents but she never smelled them. She just doesn't have that nose. This is what happens when a normie boomer chemist with clearly no artistic tendencies/sensibilities, only credentials, is allowed to make fragrances. Hermes is selling literal dill-water with this one. Projection and longevity are virtually non-existent here. Encre Noir has better P&L.
About the cap... it smells best when concentrated. When I spray it I spray point-blank for that reason but unfortunately it's still not enough to save the perfume. I can only hope it grows on me, that I wake up one day and like it more than usually like with some other frags. I wish whatever pear or grass there is in it opened up more for me but all I'm getting is dill-water.

This.
They say that fragrances have already macerated prior to being sold, but I'm starting to think there's a continuation of the process upon unsealing the perfume. Noticed that sometimes I'll hate a perfume at first spray but then it grows on me, if not within weeks then months. The question remains, is it a psychological adjustment/acclimation to the scent or is it subtle changes in the chemistry of the juice?

Certainly a mix of both and nose digesting the new smell, brain adapting and shit like that.
But there's absolutely no doubt that there's an evolution of the frag itself after using it out of the box.
Like it's balancing itself and gaining more power.
It was pretty obvious for me with Encre Noire, the very first time that I smelled it I was angry and wanted to smash the bottle on the ground, I even asked myself if it was a real fragrance and not a fake.
Then after a couple of weeks, it started to develop some notes and presence, like it was slowly blooming.
The first sniff was alcohol+ashtray+faint pine note, almost no staying power, longevity was catastrophic, but after the two week sitting all was getting in place and even better, after multiple monthes to years, the thing has grown even more and is now at full power, now I'll see if it's going to die at some point or if it will continue to grow in power or stay like that.

I’ve smelled both Follow and Followed and didn’t care for either, but in (much distant) hindsight, I think it’s because
1: I don’t particularly care for -any- coffee frags, and
2: They need to be smelled as sillage, not directly off the skin / near the skin, which is how I typically test most fragrances.
This next part is 100% speculation on my own part, so take it with a massive grain of salt, but I think the perfumer basically saw the popularity of Follow and literally just upped the oil concentration for Followed, without any consideration for actual balance. Like he took Follow from an EdP straight to an Extrait, and bumped several oils that in large(r) doses smell bad/burnt. Same way animalics are only good (to most people) in small doses, but up the concentration and they literally smell like feces.

No, letting a product voluntarily sit and wait unsold is very expensive in business. Extra storage and labor add to the cost, not to mention the loss of short term profit. These might seem like small amounts but they translate into huge differences in retail prices. The companies that macerate their perfumes have to charge more but that doesn't that all the expensive perfumes are macerated. I highly doubt something that sells for less than $50 was macerated.

With the trend for eating healthier and the decrease in sugar consumption in places like the US, the growth of the "tastes and flavors" segment has slowed. To compensate for this slowed growth the oligopoly of Givaudan, Firmenich, and Symrise, have colluded to promote gourmands and sweet scents to increase their profit margins for the aromachemicals that have lower demand due to healthier eating trends. Not only have female scents become sweeter but so have male scents to capitalize on the whole market. Not only does this bring in more profit in fragrances due to higher profit margins it slows the decline in the flavor segment by keeping people craving unhealthy sweet foods.
Friendly reminder that the top perfumers are not independent rockstars that get to do whatever they want, but employees and shills for the big flavors and fragrances companies: Alberto Morillas (Firmenich), Oliver Cresp (Firmenich), Dominique Ropion (Givaudan), Bertrand Duchaufour (Symrise), Nathalie Larson (Firmenich), Jean-Claude Ellena (Givaudan), Daniela Andrier (Givaudan), Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud (Firmenich), Quentin Bish (Givaudan), Thierry Wasser (Firmenich, Givaudan), Annick Menardo (Firmenich), etc.., Not to mention that youtubers and tiktokers are the biggest shills for sweet scents.
Wait until you hear why they "banned" oakmoss. Spoiler alert, the answer is also profit margins, because that is always the answer.
tldr: men have to smell like the candy isle now because the penny-pinchers have to balance for the slowing sales in junk food aroma-chemicals

Is that what it's like in the US?
Here in England it's not sweet frags that dominate popular mens perfumery, it's ambroxan bombs.
I rarely smell gourmand fragrances on men here, but not a day passes where I don't smell either Sauvage, BdC, Dylan Blue, or some Arab dupe equivalent on men between 20-40.

I should add, I feel as if ambroxan is the oakmoss/ambergris of contemporary perfumery (and to a lesser degree the patchouli derivatives like akigalawood), and I guess that ties into your point about the fragrance companies pushing their chemicals, and why they 'banned' these more traditional fixatives, so they could push their own alternatives on the industry.

100%. No way the margins on oakmoss extract are higher than synthetic ambrox. Nobody has banned oakmoss, not even the EU. IFRA themselves told the EU that oakmoss is bad and they are going to limit it to 0.1%. This is all so they can make more money on ambrox.

> hurr durr big flavor is making men smell like a mall kiosk to sell more Twinkies
holy shit this take is so retarded I'm embarrassed reading it
> Gourmands are being pushed by Givaudan and Firmenich to offset sugar profits!!
You think Firmenich’s R&D department is a bunch of kikes sitting in a dark room snarling
“people are eating fewer Snickers… QUICK, MAKE ULTRA MALE EVEN SWEETER!”
The flavor and fragrance divisions are separate, faggot. They don’t need to mind-control you via vanilla overdose to make money. They’re printing cash selling shampoo base #9348 and fake strawberry to yogurt brands.
> Perfumers are just corporate shills
Yeah no shit, welcome to the world. You think Bertrand Duchaufour is out here mixing myrrh and bat piss in a forest hut like some wizard? Nah, he’s filling briefs from brands who want “sexy but fresh but also edible for zoomer boys to shill on tiktok”
> Oakmoss was banned for profit margins!!
It was IFRA-regulated for allergens. You can still use it, just not raw and unfiltered like your autism. Also: oakmoss doesn’t scale well for mass production, and Diors not risking a lawsuit from some Karen in Iowa because she got a rash from Eau Sauvage vintage.
> Youtubers and TikTokers shill sweet scents!
sweet = dumb = mass appeal = views = affiliate links. Doesn’t mean there’s a cabal. Just capitalism, baby.
> Smelling sweet keeps people addicted to sugar
This is literally rěddit basedscience. Nobody sprayed A*Men and said “god damn I need a chocolate lava cake" you fucking eternal bullying victim. Sweet scents sell because normies like them.

I'm looking for a fragrence on a budget to wear on the daily. I dont usually wear my cologne everyday but would like one that can be used regularly and isnt too expensive to top up.
The only two i have currently are Versace Eros and Armani You intensley. Pictel is what chapgt recommended, but i cant find them in shops here in Spain, as id like to try them first. I can dind them on Vinted for example.
What do you think of the recommendations? Any others? I like woody scents but also need something more summer as well. I also really like Yves Saint Laurent which my father wears, but i dont hear it talked about much

Lattafa oud for glory
I just tried out a sample. During the opening I was like wow holy shit. This thing is only $20 but it smells amazing. Then over the next hour or so I feel that it smelled so sophisticated and punched above its weight. But then a few more hours later, it somehow turned into a synthetic deformed copy of BR540. Like wtf. What’s with that weird late dry down. I hate BR and its clones so it turned me off. Went from a no brainer sure buy to stay the fuck away. It projected for over half the day.
Is there anything like oud for glory that doesn’t devolve into rogue slop? Or is that the destiny of anything that has “saffron” notes.

I think Oud Minerale is acceptable in a younger and less formal office, but it's right at the limit.
I'd try Costa Azzurra EDP for a woody but very approachable mineral, sea salt scent, Encre Noire for more vetiver, Timbuktu for slightly sweeter and more exotic vetiver, and Fat Electrician for creamier and comfier vetiver.

Trying out RL Purple Label. I'm liking the herbal notes I get here, slightly anisic but fresh. I think this is what Cedrat Boise was trying to be, rather than a pure Aventus clone as some suggest. Of course the RL smells better than CB in every way, with the trade off being performance. I would rather get this and overspray it than endure the opening of any Aventus clone.

>Comme de garcons original (1994 edp)
Opens up extremely gray, spicy, and dry, like an angry stack of printer paper. Extremely offputing at first, then quickly tries down to a gorgeous cinnamon/clove/balsam/vanilla accord. It's like a basket of scented holiday pinecones. Absolutely wild switchup, will definitely try this again in colder weather but it really is like someone punching you in the face after dusting their knuckles in cloves. Also reminds me of those Djarum clove cigarettes hipster faggots (me) used to smoke

I was able to smell some very nice old Guerlains while I studied, but the old patous were my favorites. Regarding price, it depends on if we can reuse a previously made formula or if it has to be created from scratch. It also depends on who makes it. Generally speaking formulas made by famous perfumers can range from six to seven figures, while those made by unknowns usually go for less. The most important thing is time, if you have a team of lab assistants and technicians working under a master perfumer for a few months it’s gonna cost you a very pretty penny. If it’s just two or three perfumers working on an already previously created formula, it’s still going to cost (around five figures) but you get something very nice out of it.

Also, how many frags have you released to market, how did you get into the field, what is your major?

Funny that you should mention that, we purchased Charabot a while ago, and one of their main offerings is something called castoreum hyperessence, a modified castoreum material. I created some formulass where I incorporated it into a fruity leather accord since the hyperessence enhances the floral fruity aspects. Realistically speaking you won’t find any “real” animalic products in commercial fine fragrances unless they are in the high end price bracket, a notable exception is beeswax absolute. Nowadays almost all products containing animalic notes are using premade bases such as Givaudans castoreum givco or castoreum firbest by Firmenich.
>>18492694
I wouldn’t define MA as a narcotic material. In my experience, narcotic notes are usually intense balsamic white florals, best exemplified by Ylang complete or Ylang 1. Most identifiers aren’t necessarily tied to a single product but are rather common identifiers generally used by all perfumers to define certain materials. In the end each perfumer has a certain way of identifying materials and associated a particular idea with them. My schooling was quite traditional in that sense, but nowadays most perfumers keep their own “books” about materials full of annotations, sort of like Arcadi Boix Camps.

I have both worked as an assistant to some well known professionals and worked as part of a team or solo for some smaller projects. I can’t reveal what, but I worked on a fragrance that was very well received at Esxence

Grey Vetiver for modern and zingy, Vetiver for classic and earthy.
I'm among those who think Vetiver smells like an old person's house, so for me it's Grey Vetiver every time.

I thought Sycomore smelled like Encre Noire with a variety of herbs as contour.
It was certainly more wearable, but is it really more realistic?

I can’t really wear anything while I work, sometimes I get samples for free and I usually wear those, especially if I was involved in the creative processes. I can’t really divulge anything beyond the fact that said fragrances are extremely expensive and sold in some very particular high end stores in the western hemisphere. A very technically impressive fragrance that I used to be quite fascinated by was interlude 53

Vetiver oil in itself is a melody of smells and composition. Various regions produce different profiles. Like oud oil, vetiver is complex enough to be worn as a fragrance by itself. Sycamore smells like a good quality vetiver.

Very disappointed. Le Male Le Parfum smells great but has abismal performance. Elixir’s top notes smell like medicine and are cloying, at least the dry down smells good and lasts longer than half an hour like Le Parfum, but I’m not dropping any money on these. Gonna try Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee and some Valentino Uomo, heard those are solid.

I find it most technically impressive how Interlude 53 deviated from the classical structure of IES + hedione and low impact musks which are omnipresent in modern perfumery. In my experience working on projects of the sort, amouages core philosophy seems to be focusing on single high impact materials and balancing them with each other, creating giant structures around them to support the core elements. In the case of interlude, its a quite interesting oud and leather accord. Most impressive is the fact that it has a 53% concentration despite being cat. 4.
In regards to its flankers like interlude and interlude black iris I cannot divulge too much besides that I don’t like them

As a perfumer, what do you think of nicolai?
>>18493800
She isn’t really part of the industry in the sense that most of her products are old Guerlain formulas that were rejected for one reason or another, from what I’ve heard she mostly adjusts them price-wise and allergen-wise. Before being a fully fledged perfumer I worked on evaluating new molecules. I happened to come across some of her works. Back then they struck me as particularly thin, maybe that’s because I had Guerlain in mind, but I’d be lying if I said that I’m well versed in the makeup of her current catalogue.

All the molecules we use are completely safe, the European Union requires all our products to be allergen safe etc. In the past, Perfumery used to be a little more “wild West” style, meaning that a lot of materials weren’t as regulated as they are nowadays, coumarin for example used to be added to pudding and cakes.

Reminds me of chanel no. 5.
Soapy, flowery, in a vulgar and somewhat dirty way. Also warm spicy.
In the opening white flowers are really strong, almost violent, then they gradually get replaced by sandalwood. The soapiness of aldehydes remains persistent and dominant throughout.
I hate it.

Reckless frag buyer noselet here.
>>18490835
After 5 or so days I can say I enjoy all 3 purchases a lot more than day one. Maybe it's the heightened expectations I had at the time, maybe it's air being let into the bottle, maybe it's my mind rationalizing the scents to make them seem more pleasant, or that I'm telekinetically editing, tweaking and rearranging the molecules, but here's what I'm getting now...
>Davidoff Cool Water
Still overrated as shit but I'm getting less of those "plastic doll" notes than the first time, a little bit more of those marine notes and now it lingers well. This was not the case on first spray at all where it had the most unsettling effect for me. I like it more now but I can't say I like it overall.
>H24 Herbes Vives
I still dislike Herbes Vives but I don't hate it. It still smells like chemical slop and gourmand dill notes (lmao) but I'm finding parts of it that I actually appreciate. Mostly making use of it as a room spray.
>Encre Noir
To slight surprise, Encre Noir has jumped to being my favorite of the 3. It smelled so cheap and with an odd undertone
>>18490926 that I was put off. That odd undertone appears to have faded completely now and I'm in earthy ink heaven. Wtf. I am convinced that letting in a bit of air to cycle in the bottle actually does something.

Yes. Imagination and all of its clones all smell like laundry detergent. The only reason people give a fuck about this frag is because a bunch of basketball players pushed it, and they're retarded. L'Immensite is the far better of the DNA and it's still not particularly good.
