Okay first of all that's not a trench coat, it's just an overcoat.
A trenchcoat, as the name implies, was a jacket with a bunch of belts around it, to keep soldiers dry in the trenches, it was often waterproofed and stuff like that.

But anyway, it's all about proportions. How long it is, how tall you are, how wide it is, and how fat you are.
If the coat is too long, it makes you look like a kid in his dads clothes.
If it's too short, it just looks cheap.
If it's too wide/loose/baggy, it makes you look shapeless, it should hug the model to a certain amount.
If it's too tight and can't be buttoned, it makes you look fat, and it makes the coat look cheap.

You absolutely must wear it with formal clothing, that is the key difference between looking good in one vs looking like a neckbeard. Do not wear jeans, do not wear cargo shorts, do not wear boots, do not wear tshirts.
Wear a white or blue collared shirt, wear dress slacks, you can get away without a tie or a suit jacket if you really don't want to wear one.

Your best bet for pulling off the overcoat look is to allow people to think you work in an office.
That is to say, be well groomed, ideally clean shaven. Don't wear anything that would be inappropriate to an office, like that stupid nazi hat, you know the one, or a bunch of anime pins, or a clothes that are not office appropriate clothes.

I generally dislike this argument since it hinges on people continuing to wear suits at offices, which is obviously not going to be the case over the next few years, and as such this strategy will cease to work. But while that has not yet happened, you can safely wear an overcoat and if you dress like you're going to the office, people will simply think you're going to the office even if you are not actually.

What a twerp. You can definitely wear an overcoat/long coat in a casual manner, even in an urban style with a hoodie underneath.
But you're correct that it mostly comes down to measurements. It's very easy to fall into the
>coat makes you look like 2 kids pretending to be an adult
>coat looks like an oversized/shitty blazer.

NTA, and yes, you can wear an overcoat with casual clothes, if you want to look like a stupid neckbeard nerd.
>even in an urban style with a hoodie underneath.
KYS nigger.

What's the best style english or american overcoat ?
Anonymous No.18492637 >>18495209
wear it with a tie or a sweater. Earth tones look the best- beige is classic but green and darker browns look good too. I wouldn't bother with black or other cool colors.

a good rule for the fit of a coat is that it should be slightly above the knees

Black ones are easier to look cringe and stupid in
I’m not buying another one unless I move somewhere way colder, but a khaki one would be easier to look OK in even if I’m not dressed to go to an office or the theater

Wear them in the appropriate weather and well-coordinated with the rest of your outfit. Wearing them in rainy late autumn weather with a shirt and slacks underneath is fine. Wearing them in the summer with shorts, running shoes and a huge chain like a nu-rapper nigger is atrocious.

That applies to clothes in general. Treat every clothing item as a tool for your environment, weather and occasion. Don't wear a fucking costume. You'll only end up looking like a cosplaying retard who sticks out like a sore fruity thumb. Yes, fashion is about standing out, but in a good way. Not like a weirdo with no awareness of his surroundings and occasion.
