/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - HATCH GRAIN EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Looking to get some comfier daily all rounder boots. I see keanue reeves seem to make both styles work.

Which should I get and looks more natural to wear in public? The top ones are on sale for nearly 50% off but are still basically double the price of the bottom.

And with danner boots (mountain lights) you have to size down half right? Eg if I'm a 10us in most sneakers I get a 9.5us in the danner boots?

>Saphir Medaille d'Ors popular leather lotion, here in a version with macadamia oil instead of mink oil. Macadamia has the same very nourishing properties as mink oil, but is completely vegetable-based. A conditioner that is very easy that penetrates the leather and moisturises, nourishes and protects. Works wonders with dry, brittle and cracked leather.

My rule of thimb is a thumb of extra space in front of the tors. Terrible pun intended. Less than that becomes uncomfortable in the long run, more than that it messes up my gait and I end up with pain on my feet if I'm walking for hours.
I also learned the hard way that if given the choice between a size that's a tad too big and one that's a tad too small, it's better to go for the bigger size because you can fix it somewhat with inserts and thick socks. There's no fixing a boot that's too small.
You probably won't be 100% sure until your boots are broken in and by that time it'll be too late to return them.

you could try to seal it with a small amount of carpenters glue, which works well for leather. I sealed a goodyear welt that separated on a pair of boots I have that way.
it would be a tricky job though, you want to make sure you don't have any glue squeeze out which could stain the surface if you miss it. Squeeze out can be wiped away while it's still wet with water and the corner of a cloth.
can't really clamp it. but maybe if you put the shoe on it's side and put a couple of heavy books or weights on the top side, the cut would come together enough for the glue to seal it. You might need to pressure on the face with the cut too, to make sure the cut does splay outwards from the downward pressure.
I would perform a dry run (no glue) to see if you can apply weight/pressure to the shoe in such a away as to get the cut to close, and in a way that can be left for a couple of hours for glue to dry. if you're not confident in the "clamping" set up, don't proceed with using glue.

hmmm...why do you suggest trading in for these? a new shoe w/ a defect vs a used shoe which has conformed to someone else's foot (sincere ask)

>conformed to someone else's foot
this is a very overstated thing that doesn't exactly happen as most imagine. Anyway if you look at the sole, this was worn maybe two, three times. A lot better than factory seconds with a big cut in the leather.
Anonymous No.18504604
>>18504585
Honestly it depends how old they are. If they were worn for more than a couple months regularly, they will have a bit of an imprint of someone else's foot.

Lads, help me expand my wardrobe and boot options (especially boots). I already own a pair of Chink Stone Brass Boots in Crimson Kudu, not sure what to get now. I definitely need a good pair of hiking boots. I like the Brass Boots, but they're not 100% cut out for going through the rugged mountainous terrain I encounter.
Any suggestions? I like brown color the best if that matters.

Some of us have strong legs and backs and enjoy going into terrain with near vertical inclines, thorny bushes, possibly snakes, and a lot of rocks of the igneous type.
For example, consider the terrain of this small town. I recently acquired a plot of land there and the climate is fucking thick rugged and forested mountains

Mexico, state of Guerrero. One of the small mountain villages deep in cartel territory.
I'm sure it'll be a nice place to live in like 30 years, they recently acquired high speed (100mbps!!!) Internet in the last 5 years but only in government centers like schools and very few homes. The farmhouse/homestead on the land I inherited has electricity, a pump for well water, septic tank, and a window AC unit! It's an old mud brick structure from the 1800s with a thatched roof. I have no plans for this place beyond a private hunting retreat for myself once a year. It's so far deep in the mountains that horseback or walking are the only viable methods to reach it

some or the funniest things about the boot industry is the fake "heritage" surrounding so many popular styles
the red wing iron ranger as we know it today didn't really exist before 2008. it was created as an archival pattern based off a boot red wing made for a while in the 70s/80s. all of the "muh iron minors muh heritage" is marketing bullshit. sure, the iron miners probably wore similar boots, but the iron ranger is from the mid 2000s
same with the viberg 2030, which they say comes from canadian wwii boots and all that shit. nope, they made the boot around the same time as red wing when the "lifestyle" heritage boot craze was really gaining traction. not to mention viberg got the last shape from dayton, so their wwii is just bs anyway
the deeper you dig into this stuff, the more bullshit you find

I can recommend the Meindl Perfekt. Made in Germany, single, oiled leather construction, Norwegian welt, Vibram montagna outsole and tough as nails. No goretex bullshit. Only downside is they weigh a little over 1kg each and there is a break in period, but you don't seem to mind. They're also in the $400 range.

I've climbed mt Olympus with them so I can personally vouch for their quality and performance. They're heavy duty and they've handled rainfall, mud, snow, creek crossings and sharp rocks no problem. I can take a pic of them if you'd like to see how they held up, I plan to take them hiking again this month and the next.

Just remeasure your foot and then get the boot 1-1.5 cm longer than your foot. Foot flat on the ground then draw the outline and measure from bottom of heel to tallest toe. They have the mondopoints listed for each product. Make sure you draw around instead of under your heel/toe

is the current red wing beckman with the flat toebox as close as you can get to the rw merchant they discontinued a few years back?

So I'm going back to college in the fall and made a request thread here: >>18505948

I'm a mature student so I'm trying to ditch the hoodies and sweatpants vibes that most kids got going on, but at the same time I don't want to be overdressed / business casual dork.

The guy in my thread recommended I switch to boots instead of sneakers , and he suggested a derby boot. Do you think this is a decent style recommendation for my needs? It does get cold here and snows a lot in the winter

I'm torn between a derby or a "service boot" - whatever it is , I'll be wearing it every single day for an academic year straight

bro my budget is like $300 , max $400 , im not looking to start a collection or anything till I get a career , just a decent shoe that holds it together for ideally 2-3 years

And I've had basic nike shoes that held up since the 12th grade to this day, I'm not someone that accrues a lot of wear and tear to begin with beyond some scuffs.
