Leather Jacket Thread
I learned how to ride a motorcycle earlier this year so I no longer think I'm a poser for wearing a leather jacket (not that is actually matters)
Post leather jackets you think are cool, post your collection, discuss leather jackets, materials, makers, care, etc.
Gonna buy a Schott 618 Perfecto later this year when it finally cools down

It really has to do with how others perceive you desu. I'm a metalhead and dress like one, shitty boots, dark jeans, band shirt. The only jacket that looks at home with this is a double rider. A moto jacket would jump out in all the wrong ways, not because it inherently clashes with any of the other shit i wear, but because people have the expectation that this jacket is part of this subculture.
I'm not suggesting you just dress for other people's expectations, but if you want to wear what you want, expect that people will react negatively when they can't put you in a box. If you think the clothes look good on you, who cares if other people will call you a poser? they don't know if you are or aren't. Nobody can see whether or not you actually ride unless you park in front of them.

Iβm 6β0 and I got the 519 because it fits like a modern jacket. The 618 is specifically cut for motorcycle riding, & sitting on a bike + it will take far longer to break the leather in if you are not wearing it 24/7. The 519 is more for fashion, & I can layer it with a denim jacket or a hoodie, they will all be the same length for a cleaner look. If your going for the 50βs greaser crop top look get the 618. I went into the Schott store in the city I live, & tried on all of their other jackets to see how they would fit with & without the other pieces I was planing on wearing it with. tldr the 519 is 26 in back length where as the 618 is 25 in if you are 6β2 you should probably get a 519 xl or xxl. I got an xl and it fits perfectly except the sleeves are like a quarter inch too long for me.

lmao you are brown
let's discuss leather jacket alternatives. the way i see it the classic cropped fit type of leather jacket is a rugged and casual alternative to the sport/suit jacket. post any jackets you know of that fill that same niche and why you like it:
>vintage wool sports jackets
things are so underrated. i almost don't want to blow up the spot. they are rare and hard to come by because they are old and moths ate a lot of them, and good repro is few and far between + the zips won't ever be as good. but when good ones do come up for sale they don't sell for very much. you can get a nice one for around 50-100% of the price of an entry level decent leather jacket. if you are a poorfag or a reseller you can find these things at estate sales and on boomer b/s/t facebook groups.
>black denim
le budget leather jacket. good for metal/punk people who might not be ready to commit to heavily modifying a $1000 jacket. hard thing is finding black denim in a cropped fit.
>indigo denim
different vibe but it essentially fills the same role as a leather jacket, except it doesn't look as 'nice' and it's more rugged and breathable but less protective.
>moleskin
very hard to find moleskin jackets that aren't elongated fit but the ones that are out there are very nice. i think it's a superior option to suede if you want that short piled look. and it's the best leather jacket analogue if you want something breathable. they are great for cold places that don't rain and 3 season type weather. ooe yofukuten's moleskin cossack jacket is an example of one i like.
>waxed canvas
in theory would be a great alternative. in practice most jackets have an elongated look and don't fit the bill. if you have a longer torso the filson short lined cruiser is the one to get.
>unwaxed canvas and duck
vintage carhartt jackets especially in the black and darker colors have the right look. if you have short enough arms consider the women's version it looks better on most guys under abt 6'2.

Mind you, I've had a couple of PU jackets over the years and it happened both times. One was fine for about 5 years and then peeled off completely after wraring it one day under mid rain.
The other sat on a closet for a year or two and started peeling the moment I touched it.
I guess it depends on the quality of the PU but there's no way to asses it that I know of. PU jackets do not patina nor show signs of age until one day they just implode.
I very much prefer leather, even the cheapest leather is more dependable than the best PU imho. People overstimate the ammount of care leather jackets actually need. I've got a couple of leather jackets which are about 20 year old each and have condition them once and probably didn't need to, but did just in case.

Schott and Vanson Suck. They're both cut for fat ass American bikers. Lewis Leathers mogs both of them. Also imho unless you're actually using it for riding you should always go with shorter sleeves and a softer leather like lamb. That makes the jackets look and feel 100x better in a fashion context.
But obviously it's retarded if you're actually using it for riding. Then you want something heavy like horse and the sleeves need to be longer so they dont leave your wrists exposed when you're reaching for the handlebars. But also you probably want a modern ass jacket with kevlar panels then. And they look extra fucking autistic for fashion.
You almost literally need 2 jackets if you ride. One for hanging out and one for actually using on the road. But seriously if you're under 300 lbs look at Lewis Leathers instead.

Honestly, I never got the fear this board has for perfectos. My first leather jacket was a perfecto (not actually a Schott, some other brand, buffalo leather) that I wore almost daily for years. Provided I was wearing a mix of punk/metalhead fits back then (low profile sneakers, jeans, band tee and the jacket) so it worked. I still think a perfecto can be styled with less punk/metal fits but will always have that connotation.

They were a bunch of losers before that, and even in terms of statdom they always were kind of losers. And I say this as a big fan of the Ramones.
I understand not wanting the punk, metal or biker connotations but Zara got that taken care off a decade ago when it convinced a ton of urban professionals to wear their perfecto with a casual fit.

For non-collared jackets, these days I'd rather go for a harrington or a vintage nylon or cotton racing jacket, the latter if I wanted a statement piece.

What? I knew a guy that wore a jacket like this. He was the dude that would bring his acoustic guitar to parties and force everyone to listen to his songs but he was legitimately tone-deaf and couldn't sing to save his life. He also got violent anytime he'd drink and tried to grope the girl I was dating even though he had a gf (he eventually married and later she divorced him)
I realize this guy fits the jacket to a t so maybe the memes are true

Bros, what can I get that is like the Indiana Jones jacket without being a copy?
I have been obsessed with it since I was a kid, and I know there's a couple good repro brands that supposedly nail the jacket, but I don't want an exact replica, I want something similar and in the style of it, but something I can wear and have it be my own, rather than just an Indy jacket replica
What I know about the jacket is its lambskin which is why it drapes the way it does and moves so well, it's apparently just an A2 but with the knit parts removes and the body and sleeves extended to make up for it
Any good flight jacket designs or something similar that are close I can check out? Budget is 1k USD

Yrs, it's an A-2 flight jacket without tge elastics on the waist and cuffs. Hard to find one with that cut and pocket configuration that's not a costume repro. Those tend to be of dubious quality. If you want something similar but not quite like it, perhaps Aero's longshoreman might be an option. Somewhat close to your budget.

I don't think car voats wete ever really popular. The reason being that people more likely to go for a leather jacket (bikers, metalheads, punks, etc.) tend to favour shorter jackets or different styles. Car coats tend to be more expensive also, due to needing more material that is already on the expensive side.
That being said, leather car coats and blazers seem to have had a bigger presence in the 70's and 90's.

People who buy those jackets don't think long term when it comes to clothing. They just buy the trendy item of the season, wear it a few times and then discard it when the new trendy item hits the shelves. As such, they don't want to spend much money on something that's gonna end up in the bin in a few months.
That's why fast fashion is a thing, it solves several problems for normies at once. It tells you what to wear so you do not have to think about it. Since you'll be comforming to the norms, guarantees peer approval. Giives the thrill of novelty since you get something new to wear every few months or even weeks. Plus, it's cheap.
Side note: this also allows brands to skimp on quality since most garments will get discarded before they fall apart.
Another side note: this business model is largely responsible of the death of personal style and subcultures.

Ot depends, some type of jackets look better on black, others on brown and some can go either way.
I used to think black is more versatile, but that depends on the rest of your wardrobe.
Also it's genetally advised that should match the leathets in yoir outfit. So if you usually wear black leather boots and a black leather belt, you're better off getting a black leather jacket and the othet way around.
I don't think this is a hardcore rule that should never be broken, but rather a general guideline for when in doubt.
Do you wear black very often? What type of jacket are you looking for?

It's harder to make good decisions when the stress of managing your finances is excessive. The system keeps them where they are and you blame them for not knowing better? That's just victim blaming bullshit. It's frustrating seeing people make bad decisions, but you take away peoples education, time, and money and anyone can be worked into a cycle of self destruction, it's a roll of the dice to a large extent. You're avoiding acknowledging your survivors guilt by acting like you succeeded only because you wanted to bad enough and they don't. This is especially hilarious when you consider that half the ways that people make money are purposefully explorative, otherwise people wouldn't desire financial freedom as much as they clearly do.

Goat is very soft and flexible, but has a grain on it some might not like.
Horse is very smooth but stiff as fuck, takes ages to break in
Cow and steer are in the middle
I like cowhide because it's soft, has nice grain and is durable as fuck. It's a nice middle ground and you can't go wrong. My Schott is pebbled cowhide and I love it

my advice, and obviously take it with a grain of salt, is look for something used in the size you think is correct. if it's the right size, perfect! sell it and buy the 1k thing you want. if it's not right, well now you know
i've wasted waaaaay too much money on stuff that didn't fit me that i never ended up wearing when i should have been thrifting

I got my aero teamster through a dealer called Thurston bros or something like that. They will send you a jacket in a stock size to try on, then help you with measurements and adjustments to order a custom fit. They also get dealer priority so you'll get your made to order piece slightly faster. I highly recommend them for your first bigboy jacket if you're in the USA.

ordered pic related yesterday, schott P613S. i commute on a motorcycle a lot so i wanted something that would hold up during a slide, i feel like my textile jacket would melt into my skin. i really wanted asymmetrical zipper/waist belt/no epaulets in oxblood or brown which i had a hard time finding in a suitably thick leather. i almost bought a fine creek leon but i was worried the shinki might not be thick enough

Thanks. I don't know either, I haven't received it yet. I'm 6'0 165 about a 40 inch chest and ordered a large. from what i can tell schott doesn't really publish measurements of this specific jacket and from looking at pictures and reviews and shit it seems like they cut this a little looser than a regular 613. all my other moto jackets are large and i don't want to look like a tom of holland leather daddy so a looser fit is fine with me but they do free returns if it's like way too big

I know nothing of leather jackets and I was getting that feeling while looking for a new jacket. Also at the $1000+ range I started noticing other jackets looked better and/or had better customization options.
Would Aero be high-tier? It looks high-tier to me.
