i honestly don't know, could be tho
if you posted em i might be able to tell you tho

>>18492137
>those are 1980s 505's

i don't think they're 505s as the other pair i've thrifted with them are genuine 100% 80s (87 to be specific) 505s orange tabs and they don't look too much alike (especially in how tapered they are and in how wide the leg/thigh is) when compared

Correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK orange tab was meant as a cheap line targeted at a younger audience launched in the late 70s. As such it featured trendier cuts and designs.

jeans were 8-12oz not the super thick slubmaxx stuff you are probably used to. and the upper blocks were cut looser until the 60s/70s.
also the type of jeans everyone (not just denim bros) wear these days are based on the 501 which has been more of a fashion jean than a work jean ever since the 1950's due to hollywood.
there were completely different brands and fits of jeans back then that were geared more towards working, like these 1950's hercules carpenters in the pic. they evolved into the modern day carpenter pant and dungaree. before mid century they used to be worn over-sized and often had an adjustable waist.

Do well made but reasonably priced work pants still exist or has every brand sold out to fashion? I'm looking for non larp type jeans or other work style pants, preferably in traditional cuts like high waisted with features like suspender buttons and fishtails or cinch backs for doing dirty car work and maintenance. I really like old style reproduction pants but most of them are in the $250-$300+ price range and are considered fashion pieces which really doesn't make me want to wear them like proper work wear. A well made jump suit could work as well I guess.

round house has double fronts and prison blues has single fronts with suspender buttons. usa made budget friendly.

>preferably in traditional cuts like high waisted with features like suspender buttons and fishtails or cinch backs for doing dirty car work and maintenance. I really like old style reproduction pants but most of them are in the $250-$300+ price range
belafonte ragtime's garage jeans are your endgame as long as you aren't too tall for them. wide fit, buckleback, suspender buttons, fishtail, everything you could want.
>and are considered fashion pieces which really doesn't make me want to wear them like proper work wear.
get ~1960's-2000s vintage workwear, repro of it, or stuff inspired by it (both the jeans i mention above would qualify.) anything after around then is constructed triple needle with polyester thread and will be durable as fuck. will last longer than modern workwear because the fabric is not blended (no pilling) + wider fit + no elastine. the real mccoy's or bronson 50's era us mil denim work pants would be good examples.
old timey repro with the buckleback will also hold up better than modern workwear other than the stitching. if you are fine with occasionally repairing popped stitches then your endgame is probably the belafonte ragtime garage jeans -- as long as you are not too tall for them. they have a very generous wide fit, buckleback, fishtail, suspender buttons, everything you want.
the problem is even if they last you won't want to get spills/paint/chemicals/oil/stains on your fancy jeans unless you don't give a fuck. like that redditor mechanic who spilled battery acid on his selvedge the first day.

do not wear your jeans in heavy rain.
do not squat a lot in your jeans.
if that can't be avoided, you can slow it down and reduce them by washing the jeans more, tumble drying the jeans (you must size up in waist/length fair warning) and ironing them occasionally can reverse the knee bags but only to an extent.
knee bags are a big reason why i'm trying out western flares right now. my idea is that over time when i get knee bags they'll start to look closer to a straight leg.

personally i only ever wore jap denim on the job when i was doing stuff like interior jobs, carpentry, roofing and other stuff that didn't involve paint chemicals etc. but now days i probably wouldn't care. my beaters that i used to paint in wound up looking pretty sweet in the long run.

yes if its not millenial fit and you have a decent physique.
any color combo can work its more about silhouette and texture - color's mostly a consideration in how it affects the silhouette. silhouette carries the entire fit.
it is a bit too much denim for most people and you should usually leave the jacket undone.

I noticed that most people wearing jeans jere range from rapidly ageing millennials to turboboomers. Most of them wear levis or noname cheap brands that the local shops carry. The vast mayority of the jeans available are dark washes, very few are mid or light. Everyone hete is getting amazing vintage fades without caring and I'd wager without even knowing. Moreso the older folks who have zero care about fashion and are more reluctant to buy new clothes.

Ideally I'm looking for a type 3 or a 2, I already have a cropped type 1 with side pockets. Jas to be indigo or a very dark wash. Maybe something substantial, at least 15-17oz or more. Ideally 60-65cm long. Recs? Does such a thing even exist?

>>18503194
Zoomers wanting to be ahead of the curve are already pivoting to slim cuts. Rapidly ageing millennials never let go of their slim and skinny jeans (against better judgement). Malls still carry a variety of slims and skinnies and Levis' most sold model still is the 511.
You can tell went trends are aboit to reverse when they reach their apex. In this case, some zoomers on insta are taking the baggy fits to the maximum possible (just saw a skinny guy wearing a size 76, no kidding). I assume that in less than five years, when gen alpha hits the teens in sufficent numbers they will reclaim the slim cuts and laugh at zoomers slouchy fits. That's the cycle of life.

It just depends on what you like. If you are looking for that relaxed vintage 501 fit, the wrangler cowboy cuts are not that. The top block fits pretty slim, but they are still pretty flexible and mobile. The jeans were basically designed to accentuate your ass and draw all attention to it. If you are in decent shape, they should look good on you. If you are fat or out of shape, any pair of pants will look bad on you. Personally, I'm not really into them. A pair of 501 repros look infinitely more universal and versatile

american vintage denim was never known for being dyed all that dark. you can find stuff but most of it isn't made by the big 3. a lot of the lesser known mid century brands are honestly better anyways, with levi's/wrangler you are definitely paying for hype. not as much lee but they're not the place to get dark jeans.

But if I'm gonna go that route, I might consider cutting to the chase and save for an Iron Heart modified type 3. It'd be a bit longer than what I'd like, but still shorter than my current trucker and within the acceptable length.

>Also trying to find obscure and shortlived brands from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
thats what i was talking about. good starting point would be to learn the brands from the sears/roebucks, jc penney and montgomery ward catalogues & which ones were good, serious menswear/workwear and which ones were shit made for mass market with polyester type beat. foremost and anything with "big" in the name are examples of some of the good ones. lootfam on youtube has some videos on this shit too meant for intro 101. fedoralounge has some threads with dece info.
i just have a lot of accumulated knowledge from looking at shitloads of ebay/etsy/vintage store listings and owning stuff over the years. dunno if there really is a crash course i can point you to but this stuff is out there and the barrier to entry is why its still available and cheap.
way more cool mid century and pre war menswear shit too than just denim. check out vintage wool sports jackets from the 30s-50s ish. they're really cool and obtanium and the fit is very in style rn.
there's way more brands that levi's/lee/wrangler who made high qual jeans from like 1900-1980ish that its a lot easier to find vintage pairs of which aren't beaten and worn to shit already.
reproduction is sick too though. check out the brands almost vintage style on youtube shills that's probably a good start to the rabbithole of really patrician harder to get shit.

>but I don't know if going over 14oz on a denim jacket is a meme.
i like my jackets light so they're more wearable year round personally. i wear them a lot when it isn't cold out as an alternative to sunscreen + mosquito repellant. about 10-14oz is my ideal for an unlined jacket. its all preference though the heavy ones fade really cool and they're more protective.
Anonymous No.18505882 [Report] >>18505889 >>18506192
>>18505864
i would start by hoarding scans of mid century catalogues and learning about the brands that way then find the actual garments themselves on ebay etsy vintage stores etc and study the pics closely and learn about the garments themselves. study the fine details and if you don't already know, start learning how to tell exceptional garments apart from high quality from mid quality from low quality. sold listings are a good place to look -- a lot of the high quality stuff already sold and we don't care about buying anything yet at this stage.
and fyi not all the catalogue brands are good. jc penney especially does this shit a lot where they make 7 jackets that look identical in different product lines and they range in quality from the real mccoy to budget lines making the same jacket with polyester blend. yes if you didn't know this polyester has been ubiquitous as shit since around 1950.
there's brands outside of the catalogue brands, but those are a good starting point. the algos will just feed you the other shit eventually i'm sure. if you see a garment you like and think is cool learn about the brand.
p much how you do it.
the payoff is imo vintage jeans always fit a little better than repro.
Anonymous No.18505884 [Report]
i think the problem with repro fits is that the garments they deconstruct and base the measurements off of have all been shrunk, so there's always a degree of guessing and artist's interpretation as to what things should actually measure in order to be accurate. and a lot of times the og stuff fits better than the reverse engineered stuff.
Anonymous No.18505885 [Report] >>18506192

I love all the repro companies, but if you want a type III iron heart arguably makes the best in the world. I wear 14 oz 501 repro jeans because the cuts are way better than anything iron heart produces, but all my tops and jackets are iron heart. If they stopped producing jeans and solely became a denim jacket company then I would not be mad at all. Highly recommend their 21 oz

The thing is that a 14oz would probably serve better ots purpose, since where I live a denim jackey can only be worn in spring and early fall. It's too hot on summer and too cold on winyer for it, even layering. But on the other hand, how many 21oz jackets are out there?

I'd like to ask a question. How should regular 100% not stretch to fit Levi's 501s fit? I'm 6'2" 155lbs, been lifting for a few months now, I was just barely getting into skinny fat territory before, but that is mostly fixed I think. Anyway, been wearing a pair of 30x32 and they just feel a little too loose in the waist. After a wash and dry they feel great for about an hour. There not any tightness anywhere. I bought a used pair of 29x32s and I just got those a couple hours ago. I can just barely button them without having to suck in too much and they hug my thighs where as the 30s really don't. Which, I don't mind the feel, I just don't know of they look "right." I'm hoping after a little while they will stretch out some. I am feeling like I am wearing them a little higher and that is making the length look too short. Any input would be appreciated. I tried shrink to fits 32x34 and they didn't shrink enough in the waste and shrank too much in the length.

>>18506749
Definitely too short. You're at least a 34 inseam. Meassure your waist at the height you're gonna wear your jeans and that should give you the ballpark.
100% cotton jeans tend to shrink a bit after washing and stretch a bit when you wrar them. Most will shrink over time and washes. Sometimes a full size down.

are those 501's from the 2010's? the fit changes every decade or so. i ask because they fit very slim on you. jeans that fit a little wider all the way through the leg with at least 1" wider leg opening would look better on you all around and also look more in style.
& yes they are too short to wear with shoes but you could wear those with boots or high tops.
>and they just feel a little too loose in the waist.
assuming i'm guessing right and those are 501's made during the skinny fit era, all those jeans had big waists and skinny legs. you wanna kind of look for the opposite where the leg is in proportion to the waist and you can wear your correct waist size while having the leg not be too slim. fullcount 0105's or the wide-ish fit red tornados would look good on you if you want something mass market to try out before you go balls deep into the arcane repro brands and ig zoomer brands that make wider fits.

>>18506195
unlined denim jackets are definitely layering pieces, especially the slimmer fitting ones like trucker jackets. agreed.

>>18506192
>Also, which 501 repro are your favs?
depends entirely on your build.
rebuilt.jp libra pondus 40 and fullcount 0105 probably if we're sticking strictly to 501 jeans with nothing pre-war. strictly for the fit. i like my 501's wider.

>but if you want a type III iron heart arguably makes the best in the world
prly true if you want a heavy one.
but you should tell him they sell two versions the traditional cut type iii and the modified type iii. the traditional cut looks better on almost everyone except tall skinny guys with swimmer's build.
if you're skinny be aware that using the interior pockets on them will make the gut area on the jacket stretch out and make you look out of shape lol.

And yeah, I'm aware of the modified type 3 by ih. According to the site's meassurements, the size zi'd need is about 65cm long. I would have liked it to be 60, but 65 would do. For the record my current levis type 3 is 70cm long.

>husky
>lifts naturally
same recs i posted then. and i'd also recommend venturing outside the realm of 501 based jeans because if you're husky or lift then basically all 501's are going to fit slim if you don't go custom.
here's some examples of non 501 jeans:

https://therealmccoys.com/collections/bottoms/products/triple-stitched-denim-work-trousers_141-indigo
etc
a lot of the real mccoy's shit i linked bronson or other china brands make too.
some of that stuff its not that hard to find dead stock vintage of the originals. for example the navy jeans are pretty common.
right now look for jeans with a more squared off upper block shape and as you lose the midsection switch to preferring pairs with a more rounded or tapered upper block. i also recommend buying buckle-back jeans when you're losing weight as they will still probably be wearable after your weight loss and they'll be more adjustable during the process of losing weight.
if you're not into the vintage/workwear/military jeans vibe look into zoomer ig brands like yuremane/ktwo esp as you lose weight.

65 is what you want. the perfect fit for a jacket imo overlaps the jeans by about an inch, doesn't go above the waistband but doesn't go below halfway down the fly. ideally you can wear high rise pants at around the navel and still get your hands in and out of the pants pockets without having the fold the jacket out of the way when unbuttoned. if you can do that and it doesn't look too short the fit in length is perfect.

Autism rant/blog post:
Weather cooled down for the week so I cracked out the Samurai s510xx in the 21 oz. I really think it may be their best denim and cut. Their other denims have way too much texture and slub whereas the 21 oz has a slightly more uniform feel with reasonable levels of texture. The shade of indigo is incredible in person, and the 510 cut is that perfect 60s repro. Compared to the IH634 (also a 60s repro inspired cut), it actually has enough room in the top block. Now that I’ve spent some good time with this, it really blows my mind to look at the 634s and see how Iron Heart chooses to take repro cuts that are already perfected and make completely unnecessary modifications like lowering rise and slimming the leg even more. A 60s repro is already on the absolutely bare minimum level of rise and thigh width for a “straight” cut, why the fuck would they lower/slim it up even more? Out of all their cuts, The 1955 is arguably their best, but even that was subjected to unnecessary fuckery with the absurd degree of taper they chose to add below the knee. Like, what was the point of doing that? Aesthetic purposes? True 1950s repro cuts already have a perfect taper ratio, so when they add that extra ~40% of taper below the knee it crosses that threshold of looking weird or unnatural instead of hip. The worst part is that they literally call it the “1955” even after they altered the cut to not actually be a true 1955.

I however don't really understand why they felt the need to install a back pocket rivet on the outside of the jeans. Also, I prefer the fades from other 1950s jap repros like the Warehouse 1001xx or the TCB 50s, which admittedly is a very nitpicky thing to bring up

The 634 work really well for me on the legs, considering that my larger than average thighs can barely fit in 501s and I had to give up on 505s and other 60s repros for that reason. I just wishthe rise was a mere inch longer, if it were they'd be the perfect jeans for me.
I'm still yet to find something that fits better than the 13mwz, can't beleive the closest thing to a perfect pair of jeans are some fucking cheapo wranglers from the 40s.

I mean yeah, it’s classic. If you already like repro style jeans then you can’t go wrong with that. Is it better than anything made in Japan? Not necessarily, they’re all great. Warehouse and Real McCoys make really accurate replications of cone denim, so there’s nothing magical or special about it

This is what I mean, the most absurd detail about the 634 is the astoundingly low rise. It’s supposed to be “inspired” by a vintage 501, so a 10.5-11 inch rise is just full blown retarded. It’s not like there’s a perceivable function to lowering the rise either. I think the original intention of the lowered rise was meant to allow for more comfort while hunched over on a motorcycle, but I’m having a hard time believing that a 60s repro even needed a lower rise in the first place. Was there some large scale complaint amongst bikers about 501s being uncomfortable? I don’t think so. The OG bikers from the 50s were wearing higher rise jeans. Even TJ from the Shop Vancouver wears his IH1955 while going for rides

Those look good on you anon. Tried the same pair on at Self Edge and while they fit me better than my 634, I didnt have any of that slack in the thigh you're getting which made them a non starter. With Samurai I prefer the S3000 which is a comparable fit in the top block but looser through the thigh and calf or the S3100 which is about two inches higher in back rise, leading to more of a 1947 repro fit. Both are significantly better cuts than anything IH though simply because I dont need a belt for either one whereas even on the 1955 I need to size up in the waist to accommodate my legs.
>>18517298
Try the 501 STF. I can't even pull normal 501s all the way up my legs, but can comfortably wear the STF version. They fit really similar to Wranglers imo. Only thing to note is that the three main colors (indigo, black warp white weft, double black) consistently fit a little differently. The indigo and black/white fit near identical through the leg at the same size but the indigo is consistently bigger through the seat and waistband. The black run about a full size smaller than the other two colors. Also look into the 634z. Its the non selvedge variant of the 634 and for some ass backwards reason has an almost inch higher front rise than the selvedge one. Also makes zero sense considering the whole 'we lowered the rise for bikers' spiel, but JP bikers on the whole dgaf about selvedge hence the 634z existing at all.

Pants that have a high contrast betwern the top and the bottom. Usually a mid rise and somewhat relaxed top block, regular thigh and aggressive taper from the knee down. They were pretty popular in the 10s, but are currently out of fashion. Rapidly ageing millenials still wear them. The levis 512 would fit the bill.

If you buy raw unsanforized jeans, the initial shrink you get after a hot soak is a considerable amount, so it stays permanent. That said, after each subsequent wash they will fit slightly snug and then stretch back out a little bit after a day of wear. This is where the waist of all my jeans naturally sits. What’s the difference between modern Levi’s 501, 505, 506?
>501 vs 505
Is it just a matter of having a button fly or zipper?
>505 vs 506
Is the 506 just stretchier?
Can any fit differences (like thigh snugness) between these styles just be chalked up to poor quality control since Levi’s calls all of these “straight” fits?

>501 original
The quintrssential jean. Levis has changed the fit over the years to keep up with trends, but basically a mid rise straight fit. Like most jeans made post WWII, has a slight taper bellow the knee, but still considered a straight fit. The 501z and some variations have a zipper instead of a button fly.
>505
Originally released in 1967 it marked levis departure from workwear to casualwear. A mid rise with a zipper, it's a straight fit but fits a bit tighter on the thighs without being a proper slim fit.
>506
Similar to 505 but with a bit more tapering bellow the knee and a more relaxed fit on the top block.

Speaking of Levis, does anyone have any info on the Products with roots collection? Apoarently Levis dropped said collection in 2008-2009. Detail on the selvedge. Saw more jeans from the collection and none of them were selvedge. Who the fuck uses selvedge denim for counterfeited jeans? Anyway, alk the details in the construction match the levis jeans I own, as if they didn't cut corners to make these jeans 100% accurate (assuming they're fakes).
I did a bit of research and the Products with roots collection existed, there's still a reference to it in the ofgicial levis page. I've seen plenty of 1947 501 and 1967 505 for sale on second hand apps, but almost no info about the collection online.
Now, I know Levis make some jeans at Morocco and Turkey. I know the factories in Morocvo also make some extra jeans on the side which then are sold at flea markets, but they're easy to spot. Could the turks be doing the same thing?
