Test at sephora or other perfume shops then buy from ebay or fb groups. I got my 100ml Dior Homme for $80 and my 50ml Tobacco Vanille for $140 from reputable fb groups. I rarely see 100ml designer bottles going for over $150 on these groups so you can get a steep discount if you wait for one
>I don't want to fuss around with resellers or secondhand or sampling

Yesterday I tested putting vaseline on the wrist and inner elbow of my left arm to see if it makes the fragrance last longer. I guess it does "work" by not evaporating as much so it lasts longer, the problem is that it means also doesn't smell as much. The worst part is that I could smell the vaseline, sometimes more than the fragrance itself. It might vary based in the fragrance you use, I used my shortest lasting cologne. I couldn't say exactly how much longer it lasted but it's like comparing a fragrance at a third of its intensity lasting one third longer. Not worth it for me and I would not recommend it unless A. You find a moisturizer that is truly odorless or you don't mind smelling it with your fragrance, and B. You have something you want to smell at a portion of its intensity. I'll stick to staying hydrated by drinking lots of water.

Try castor oil or coconut oil next. Generally fragrance lasts longer on dirty skin because the oils in the fragrance get fixed by the oil on your skin and will last longer. Castor oil is great for skin and doesn't have a scent like how coconut oil does. Haven't tried it tho

Just don't be a fucking dumb idiot magdumping your wallet on the first thing you see and you'll be fine. All of my bottles and decants are from FB groups and they're all legit because I can identify who a good seller is, and because good groups ban scammers with extreme prejudice, and because I can smell a dupe in 2 seconds because dupes are trash. Well blended, complex, with unique notes. Easy to match up the note pyramid. If it's from a house I'm familiar with you can usually detect the compositional DNA they follow. Originals are smooth from top to base. Dupes are often harsh off the top or use aromachemicals that have more chemical notes. Also dupe houses are going to be pursuing fragrances with high sales that they can capitalize on. The fragrances I am sampling are not going to be the target of dupers, and if they were the returns would be so low that the duper's budget for making the dupe would be so low that it would have no chance of holding the nuances of a well-made fragrance composition. But you knew all this already, right anon? You were just testing me I hope. You're not a noselet are you?

Costa Azzurra EDP is aromatic (like rosemary and cypress and a tiny bit like lavender), dry-woody (like cedar and a bit like vetiver, not like creamy sandalwood) and salty-marine (like seaweed and salt, not really like ozone or calone).
The Parfum is similar enough, but more dry-woody and less salty-marine.
I definitely prefer the EDP overall.

that's your takeaway? I am not gambling on the first retard that posts their decant list. If that's your approach to buying person-to-person online, yeah definitely stick to paying retail. But anyway it must be nice having a mall that carries private collections of niche perfumers. If I get a dupe of Houbigant Tobac Nomade or Fougere Royale, I would honestly be impressed someone took the time not just to dupe them, but also for the seller to buy them and hope to scam me out of $10 with them.

I got a bottle of D&G Velvet Wood. Surprisingly it starts with a citrus blast that is not listed on the notes. It doesn't last long before it opens into a spicy and realistic wood scent. The benzoin and leather notes make it very elegant and opulent but it keeps a zesty note throughout. Unfortunately it smells exactly like the home fragrance of a rich family I knew. I'm going to wait until fall and see if by wearing it a couple of times I can disassociate the smell, otherwise I wont be able to keep wearing it. Rodrigo is also the perfumer for Arquiste and that is exactly the same profile I got when I tested a couple of their perfumes at a store. They all smell very expensive and high quality but not as wearable because they seem very specific to the lifestyles of the rich. Velvet Wood has a a few contradictions, it's spicy but smooth, it is familiar but also exotic, and it's woody but also light. It doesn't project much but it's quite linear and seems like it would last quite a bit but nothing excessive. Would be nice for a vacation scent, for a place or experience you would want to imprint with a perfume. For people who don't have the home fragrance connection that I do it might smell like the aroma of heavy dark wood furniture, leather bags, on a patio with a citrus plant.

tldr: woody and airy home fragrance for rich people

Toskovat for example is clearly a pretentious house because they go out of their way to make their stuff smell like shit, while Profumum Roma or Parfum d'Empire (just examples that came to mind) are not despite not all of their scents being easily wearable

How long did it take for your nose to become noticeably better at recognizing the different notes and accords? I assume it is an ongoing process, and for all the scents, you get to smell a new facet, based on multitude of factors, like temperature, humidity, how old the fragrance is, what other aroma-chemicals are in the air, your current mood, etc.
Today, I finally "found" the mint note in CAHSEE. At first, I smelled just a fresh sweet orangeade, with vanilla, kind of oscillating between both. Time passed, and I could differentiate the vanilla from the tonka, and notice the musk at the tail end of the orange. Then I finally could get the wood accords. And today, after 1 hour from a reapply, I could finally get a sweet mint, separately from the orange.

Any recommendations of more minty forward fragrances? Someone recommended Guerlain L'Homme (not the Ideal ones), but that it could feel too boozy.

Man I found nothing
>H24 + flankers
Not my thing, too sharp, not a fan of the metallic note either
>TDH
Never liked it or its flankers
>Prada Carbon
They didn't have it

Also tried
>Le Beau
Is this just tonka? I barely smell any coconut. This is pretty much Le Male + some bullshit. At least LMLP and Elixir have something going on, this is just bad, and how is it so powdery?
>Oud Minerale
Actually an interesting frag but not very wearable, it's classy in its own way but I can't see myself making this a daily frag which is what I'm looking for. There's something sour about it for lack of a better word that is interesting but would probably be unpleasant if you caught whiffs of it all day long
>Myslf EDP
It's good, not great, but good. Kind of a "dumb reach" type I guess, not very impressive
>Bois Pacifique
This is kind of good but seems to dry down into literally smelling like coca cola
>Oud Wood
This is what the hype is about? It's a nice frag, but it should be 100 bucks cheaper. Smells pretty classy and attractive despite the obviously synthetic "oud"
>Tobacco Vanille
Too sweet, uninteresting. I get a strong honey smell from it for some reason.
>Tuscan Leather
Good, but there are better leather frags for less
>Neroli Portofino
Extremely nice, airy neroli. Would definitely wear in the summer, has that laid-back mediterranean vibe. The price is beyond ridiculous lmao
>Valentino flankers
Similar to DHI, pretty good but too powdery for me.
>Givenchy Gentleman flankers
Nothing impressive there
>Eros Energy
lmfao this is terrible, smelled like I spilled fanta on myself
>YSL Y EDP
Uninteresting ambery blue + apple
>Voyage d'Hermes EDT
Nice light tea frag, not what I'm looking for (too airy and not a fan of that DNA which you can also find in TDH)
>Kenzo line
Had already tried them, not a big fan on myself even though they're objectively pretty good and definitely original

I'm really starting to lose hope on finding something I like

Because you like plain and simple, or because you haven't smelled a great many things.
>>18503113
I was into tea and wine and whisky and rum for many years before getting into frags, so I was already decent at picking smells apart.
It is an ongoing process, definitely, and the best way to improve in my opinion is to smell as much stuff as possible and give it a name, i.e., this cleaning product smells like lavender and contains linalool, these three frags all have a soft, somewhat flowery and creamy smell in common and they're all based on sandalwood and they all contain javanol.
As for minty frags, Menthe Fraiche, though it has pretty bad performances for the price, You or Someone Like You, though the mint note disappears pretty quickly, or Viking (the one by Fragrance World, with acceptable performance and no batch variations, both of which can't be said about Creed's), though mint isn't really prevalent beyond the opening.

It wasn't one of the frags for which I kept the tester strip so I didn't experience the drydown. What I can say is that most Tom Ford frags (it seems to me at least) are nice but absolutely don't justify their price point in the slightest, they lack the complexity and quality you would expect from something in that price range
The only one I'd be willing to pay retail for is Noir Extreme and even then it's not that special, just a nice, somewhat refined gourmand.
It's too bad because there's some pretty good stuff in there (Neroli Portofino, Oud Wood, Tuscan Leather, Soleil Blanc, Ebene Fume, Lost Cherry which is great for women...) but they should be in the same price range as mainline Chanel and Dior

I'm not even sure, I've tried loads of frags but never found anything that really impressed me to the extent that I'd want to wear it all the time
I "like" a lot of stuff, from heavy ouds to clean nerolis, but there's nothing so far that I've loved
I do dislike generic aquatics though, by that I mean one-dimensional frags with very prominent "ozonic" notes
There are lots of frags I find very interesting but that I wouldn't wear, like FM The Night or Tauer LDDM, these are enjoyable to discover but I want something for daily wear that smells attractive rather than just interesting
I guess I tend to enjoy fragrances that feature cardamom, like The One, LNDL/bleu electrique, Noir Extreme, LMLP... not really a requirement though since I also enjoy a lot of fragrances that don't have it

What I'm looking for is something I can just wear whenever, the kind that feels good to catch whiffs of throughout the day, that suits all occasions. I don't work in an office so I'm aiming for good performance and projection, not something light.

That's not a thing. I would recommend you try stuff on your skin if you aren't already since it's totally different than paper. If you like LDDM try other stuff by Tauer, he makes really long lasting perfumes and there should be something from him you would like. I have Incense Extreme and while it lasts I go nose blind to it and it keeps popping up through the day. Incense Rose, which has cardamon, is quite interesting as well, heck if you want a long lasting bomb try Le Maroc Pour Elle, it takes a while to get used to due to the intensity but it is quite interesting. Not my favorite but you can also try LADAS, it's a popular and long lasting versatile scent. Outside of Tauer, if you want to check out another niche perfumery that makes long lasting scents check out Day Three, their Aylan lasts very long and it's quite nice, and their Filosofia doesn't last as long but it does have cardamon.

It's a cooler, fresh scent that isn't predominantly herbaceous/green. Le Male is a good example of a non-aquatic "blue" scent, especially because fougeres tend to evoke more green herbaceousness. That said aquatic notes are pretty characteristic of blues given that Cool Water pioneered the genre.

/Frag/ I had a thought and I’m curious about your opinion on the matter - I think I may have found a decent reason to layer fragrances. Vintage bottles.

What if you have a vintage bottle of something that’s been reformulated, say Azzaro Pour Homme, put on ~4 sprays of the vintage, then another 6 of the modern version over top of it?

Doesn’t have to be APH, any vintage frag.

Gourmands and sweet scents are not going anywhere. I think there is a serious disconnect and misunderstanding with how the mainstream uses scents. Aficionados have huge collections and try to keep up with the latest releases but the mainstream doesn't follow short lived trends, they go to the mall whenever they run out or when buying someone a gift. They just pick what they like and the tastes are still into the same vanilla, woody, sweet scents. Most people don't even use perfumes and if they get into it they are impressed by the most basic and mediocre shit. It makes sense why there are so many perfume companies and why it's such a huge industry, it's so easy to sell to normalfags.

>Gris Chanel
Extremely disappointing. Painfully generic powdery iris, leans feminine to my nose. High quality but not attractive on a man. Projects well though
>Costa Azzurra
Mediocre. It does dry down into a pleasant, fresh piney scent but it doesn't capture that carefree mediterranean vibe like I wanted it to
>Sand Dance
Interesting scent, completely unisex, but there are exactly zero occasions where I can see myself wearing this
>Haltane
Mediocre "oud", nothing much to say about it
>Layton Exclusif
This is something I'd expect Versace to release, the price they're asking for it is outrageous
>Greenley
Fresh green scent. Inferior to H24 Herbes Vives, I thought hating on PDM was contrarian snobbery but it's actually justified
>Portrait of a Lady and Musc Ravageur
Lumping these together because they both smell high quality and are interesting scents but not the kind of thing I'm looking for at all
>Acne Studios by Frederic Malle
Smells like some gimmicky CDG frag. Just clean
>Frederic Malle Promise
Yeah this is nice but it's just something you smell for the experience
>Santal Blush
Quite good but again brought down by the stupid Tom Ford price point, also leans slightly feminine to my nose
>BI
This is always solid. Every time I smell it the only thing that comes to mind is "yeah, that's good". Might buy it again.
>BI Extrait
Weird. BI DNA but with added oud-like notes. Not great
>Bvlgari Tygar
This smells pretty interesting, among the better ones I've tried today
>Oud Satin Mood
Beautiful scent, really excellent stuff. I want to buy it, but I already have a ton of winter scents and I'm not sure if the rose is fresh enough for summer.
>La Nuit de l'Homme
Tried this again as I left and walked past a sephora and it's unironically among the best I've smelled today. Shame about the performance. At this point I'm thinking of getting the arab clone with amped up longevity and calling it a day

The ones with the best performance from that graph (on my own sweet skin) are LAVS, Interlude Man, Casbah, Arso, Rien II, Incense Extreme, Incense, and LLDH.
The only ones with "bad" performance are Cardinal and L'Eau Trois.
Performance might come at the cost of scent, and mostly all of these aren't cheap anyway, so I recommend you just try them out and pick the one with the smell you like best, otherwise you'll be getting something that lasts longer and projects more but it won't be THE frag you wanted, which is a lot more valuable.

Why don't you just buy a classic neroli cologne like Acqua di Parma
Anonymous No.18504321
>Bergamask
It's fine. Orange juice and urinal cake. The orange note is dominant over the bergamot. The musk makes is smell more like mandarins. The musk itself is very clean and inoffensive, but still has that pissy / urinal cake tang thinly present behind everything as a reminder that this is still a smell for men. Not sweet just fresh and crisp without any spice. I'll wait to see how long the citrus notes will hold and what it will smell like after. I'm guessing the completely absent lavender note will become detectable as the bergamot dries and this will turn into a classic fougere.
