Yes, literally unusable. The 48 hours of nose-destroying strength has been cut down to a mere 36 hours, and the last 12 hours are merely slightly annoying, not actively nose-destroying .
This is unacceptable, I need to smell like the same blue cheese and wood accord for 12 more hours

Yeah, I have a sample of Caron PUH. I don’t find it powdery or dated (though perhaps more mature) but I also think Le Male does the lavender and vanilla profile better. In Le Male both notes are quite clearly defined, with the lavender being crisp and aromatic, and the vanilla being soft and light. In the Caron both notes are much heavier and creamier as they are the core of the fragrance. The lavender has a sleepy aromatherapy sort of feel which is blurred into the vanilla. If Le Male is like holding a lavender flower next to a vanilla pod, PUH is like powdering them together into a mixture. I suggest sampling PUH because it’s an important fragrance to know but I barely ever wear it.

I like BdC more than Myslf, but I find the YSL one more easy to wear as a dumb reach (and can be found at discounters).
Then again, I live in a warm shithole, so I rank them BdC Edt (like the citrus more here) > YSL Myslf EdP > BdC Parfum (night only). All the others are irrelevant, and the Myslf L'Absolu is highway robbery. I find it even less distinct from the EdP than the BdC flankers among themselves.

Why does my fruity and citrus frags do not project in the cold, am I anosmic or is this normal?
Perfumer Anon. I just spent 1k on two Roja frags and they genuinely feel like clones with some makeup. I got isola blu and apex, one smells like tdh and the other like old cosmair polo green. I'm not certain if you lurk around here or if you only check in occasionally but if you're around I would be grateful to hear if they’re the same frags but cloned or something
Also I’ve been looking around at summer frags and the burnt out freshie market. Everything is the same goyslop with a new coat of paint nowadays, sorta like isola blu, can you rec some good original freshies, also how do you think the market can be fixed since companies putting out such garbage that is lacking any creativity, Is it the consumers fault?
I’d also like to know what perfumers are real and which ones are frauds, I keep hearing nicolai and Roja dove don’t really perfume their own creations. If this is true I'm going to pay a homeless muslim to pour acid in Roja's face for his transgressions

as someone who is just getting into fragrances, why do people hate Tom Ford and love Creed?
I went to test multiple fragrances the other day and Creed Aventus in particular smells like any cheap cologne from the flea market, After the first two hours I could smell a minor difference but its not worth the 400 dollar price tag.
Meanwhile Tom Ford fragrances seem to make a statement and have personality, uniqueness. To me it makes the fragrance worth it and I actually bought some fucking fabulous the other day even though the name sucks balls it smells great.

I don’t think that’s a consensus opinion. Tom Ford makes good original scents and good inspired scents. People balk at the price and many (not all) TF fragrances are linear and one dimensional, but they still smell fantastic and many are worth the cost. Plus the presentation is very nice, I got a bottle of Grey Vetiver for cheap, the performance is dick so I never use it but it looks nice as a decor piece on my bathroom counter. As for Creed I haven’t smelled anything besides Aventus, which I do like, but there has been a lot of controversy with Creed since they were acquired by blackrock. Shitty reformulations, as well as the fact that the Creed brothers had ghost perfumers they were taking credit from. Not to mention the bogus history

Aventus smells like every flea market cologne, because they're all clones of Aventus. It's probably the most cloned men's frag of our time.
Reasons to hate Tom Ford:
>They make semi-clones of 10$ fragrances sometimes (Neroli Portofino, Beau de Jour)
>Overpriced
>Most of their good releases were in the 2000s
Reasons to hate Creed:
>They lie about their history
>They steal credit from perfumers and lie about who makes their fragrances
>They clone cheap fragrances sometimes (Original Santal)
>Overpriced
>They have unacceptable batch variation
Overall Creed is clearly more hatable

Its basically what I (
>>18504975) said about how TF fragrances are linear or one dimensional. They have a tendency to smell exactly the same from the first spray until the scent is gone, rather than evolving through the note pyramid. Worse yet, none of their fragrances (at least that I have encountered) are able to tell a story through the notes. Zoologist Squid, for example, starts out dark and aquatic and transforms into a warm sandalwood, which makes me imagine being out on a fishing boat in the atlantic at night, before coming to port and settling into a fire-warmed cabin. I’ve never had an experience like that with TF.

Theyre all 7-8/10. Good scents that are easy to wear with moderate to good performance. They arent 9s or 10s because their easiness lacks daringness and doesnt push boundaries or offer significant complexity. Dior Homme 2011 would be something in that vein that would be a 9 or 10 because the scent alone is so good.

Unfortunately I’m not permitted to divulge any information pertaining specifically to the composition and chemical make up of certain fragrances.
Regarding fresh fragrances, I have to agree that recent trends have been relatively disappointing, considering that most popular fragrances in this niche have always been very strongly inspired by one another. It’s not always easy to breathe new life into certain categories that are as old as this one. On one hand because the consumer expects a certain DNA, and on the other because, at least financially speaking, there is no need to innovate. Merely changing a few aspects can net you a lot of money if the marketing is good. I myself have dealt with this issue on numerous occasions when fulfilling briefs. I personally think that the easiest way to go about changing the landscape of fresh, hesperidic fragrances is to start embracing new chemical processes by which citrus notes can be extended. I have personally been experimenting with introducing multiple Schiff bases to fresh fragrances, and have had great success, with Citral based Schiff bases lasting for circa 3 weeks on a blotter.
I think Acqua di Parma makes very safe but nice smelling fresh fragrances, I’d suggest Bergamotto di Calabria.
I’m not allowed to talk about this either.

So the main complaint against Tom Ford seems to be the somewhat linear progression of their fragrances. I actually prefer it that way, if I like a certain scent why would I want it to change? One notes work great for their purpose.

> I’m not permitted to divulge any information pertaining specifically to the composition and chemical make up of certain fragrances
I wonder if you could comment on something related to what aromachemical could cause an issue.
This has happened with ADG Profondo and D&G Light Blue Eau Intense.
Ok initial output, and then when it starts to dry, just as I finish inhaling, just before exhaling, I get an incredibly disgusting smell on the top of my mouth.
The smell is like a mix of BO, raw egg whites, something musty and humid.
This has happened in both paper and skin, in different stores, in both hot and humid and template weather, and in other people.
I smelled that on some guy in a restaurant, and when asked what was he using, he responded with Profondo. "oh smells great", yet I could smell this little disgusting note for less than a second.
And a lot of people do not seem to notice it at all. It may even be a cultural perception of the note (apparently, arabs call it 'zankha' and people in the US call it 'wet dog' smell)
What the hell does it cause that smell?
(cilantro/coriander does not taste like soap to me)

Maybe it is Calone. My mother has an even sharper nose for foul smells, and she told me she hated aquatics in the 90s.
She was always a chypre for women/fougere for men fan.
She didn't delve onto why, but if that is the reason, I either inherited or learned (she was very strict on how to wash dishes) to detect and detest that smell.
So, what are some calone heavy and calone light fragrances that I can easily test (in any slop perfume section at Sephora, Macy's, etc)?
For example, in a modern Cool Water, I didn't get this smell. Was it originally calone heavy or not?

I think it’s very interesting nonetheless, the added tenacity of the resulting molecules is just a bonus, the real value lies within the citrus and orange flower effect achieved. In regards to bois imperial I can only say that me and Quentin Bisch are very different in that regard. We have different tastes and styles, I think mine is also somewhat recognizable despite my obligation to anonymity.
Bergamask is mostly made up of musks and sandalwood materials such as Javanol, little citrus is to be found.
>>18505749
Looking at the report of Profondo, nothing points to it being an aromachemical. Everything you mentioned seems points to indole or skatole, but neither contain traces. Both share many of the same chemicals. Considering the houses under which they released, and the countless trials they endured, I would highly doubt that it’s an aromachemicals off note to which you so strongly react.
>>18505759
It’s not Calone. It is used in trace amounts due of its extreme longevity and projection, and you can’t pick it out since it is part of a marine accord containing equally tenacious materials (Floralozone, Helional, Melonal) In Profondo, there is below 1% Calone.
>>18505765
I don’t think there is anything wrong with Guerlain, although I think they should release something that reminds everyone of their artistic importance in the world of luxury fragrances. I think Nicolai and Roja are both good at marketing, which is very important since you first have to convince the customer to pick out your bottle among thousands of others before they smell the fragrance. I find it particular how on this message board, Nicolai gets treated with reverence while Roja Dove seems to be strongly disliked, but maybe that is because I have only recently discovered this place. I like the anonymity and interesting atmosphere.

What exactly is the difference between two frags that smell the same but with a price difference of 100+ dollars? Other than paying more for the brand I mean. I am talking only about the ingredients used. Or is the production process more expensive due to better equipment and technology? Maybe access to exclusive molecules/aroma chemicals?

Once you start to look under the surface of the fragrance industry, you will find out that some of the most successful fragrances available are heavily influenced by other, lesser known ones. I have discussed this in previous posts. As my own experiences have shown me, many brands actively seek to emulate other products. My familiarity with many famous compositions, such as most of Creeds, Amouage, Dior, Chanel, Xerjoff and other’s offerings stemming from the fact that I am often tasked to create fragrances similar to these made by the aforementioned brands. Chemically speaking there are always going to be differences between fragrances, firstly because of the material quality, and secondly because of the fact that reproductions also use different formulas to the original, mainly because of price, material availability and the inclusion of Captives in the formula. (Some molecules can be exclusively used by certain houses). In a very well-made replica these differences are going to be so small they might as well not exist, rendering them close to perfect. The question you should ask yourself is if it’s really worth it. Commercially speaking, there is no reason to authentically recreate a high end fragrance, since you would nonetheless have to sell it at a price point that most people who are in the market for this type of scent aren’t interested in spending.
The quality of ingredients can change the scent profile, but the impact is often very negligible: I could perfectly re-create Clive Christian’s blonde amber with low quality aromachemicals for example, and it would nonetheless smell extremely similar to the point the human nose cannot tell the difference between the real and my approximative attempt. More importantly, it depends on the perfumer. If you have a professional examine the GCMS of a particular fragrance, their reconstruction will closely resemble the original, while the reconstruction of a layperson might only be 50% accurate.

That’s all there is to it, although normally you make the fragrance concentrate before diluting it in ethanol. The difficult part is creating a formula, usually there are various accords you have to balance, and in a 50 or 70 line formula, everything needs to be perfectly blended.

This reminds me, I recently got Knize Ten. It had some parts of its development that heavily remind me of Grey Flannel and Versace L’Homme. The Versace bottle also somewhat resembles the Knize bottle. Would you say Knize influenced those fragrances? I’m very interested in learning more about the impact of Knize Ten since its one of the most lovely and complex fragrances I’ve tried.

For background, I have a degree in biotechnology and a minor in chemistry, but I didn’t pay as much attention as I should have in Ochem, and I’ve been out of college for a number of years and haven’t touched any of this stuff in a while.

> It’s not Calone. It is used in trace amounts ... In Profondo, there is below 1% Calone.
Dang. Thanks perfumanon. What I find amusing, is that I notice this smell at exactly the end on inhalation and start of exhalation.
After this comment, I went and looked at fragrantica, and at least for Light Blue Eau Intense, there are comments about the 'raw egg whites', but some seemed to imply some batch variation/problem.
On reddit, someone says all Calone based fragrances smell bad on his skin, but I do notice this "note" on paper and other people too.
Now I feel it may be a mutated gen or some crazy bacteria in my nose/mouth

A Schiff base is a type of imine, (which is an organic compound formed by the reaction of a primary amine -NH2 with an aldehyde or ketone)
The defining functional group is a C=N double bond (called an imine or azomethine). This is why, if you want the same effect without risking forming a schiff base, you will use dimethyl anthranilate (as is the case in Jazz club by Margiela). In perfumery, Schiff bases are formed by combining an aldehyde with an aromatic amine, such as methyl anthranilate (I talked about this earlier when discussing Citral and orange blossom notes). MA is heavier, more stable, and longer-lasting than the highly volatile aldehydes, and the low vapor pressure makes MA an ideal fixative, meaning it slows down evaporation. In perfumery, you use schiff bases to capture volatile top notes: (Citral, Limonene, decanal, undecanal, methyl nonyl acetaldehyde) although the last one doesn’t have a citrus odor, and slowly release them over time. Citrus top notes are particularly volatile (low boiling point, low molecular mass, non polar). Schiff bases hydrolyze slowly. In laypersons terms, this means the new molecule slowly disintegrates; after the initial molecules have evaporated, new ones are gradually released. To create a schiff base you “simply” have to combine the two molecules at a certain ratio and wait, removing byproducts along the way. The resulting molecule will have greater tenacity and longevity

Knize ten is one of the most influentialal leather fragrances in perfumery. It did for leather what Chanel’s No5 did for soft aldehydic florals. Structurally speaking, the animalic green base it has is very similar to that in Versace L’homme, although some aromachemicals differ given the 60 years between releases. More than that, I think Versace was influenced by the overarching theme of leather, flowers and citrus. Grey flannel meanwhile wasn’t influenced by Knize. Fun fact: grey flannel inspired bourdon to make green Irish tweed.

He was talking about marketing not just ads. Marketing is everything that sells your product, in perfumery the product is the smell. Everything else, from branding, bottle design, image, website, social media, store, press release and samples, blurbs and "history", status, personality cult, ads, pricing, etc.., it's all marketing. Specifically I think he was talking about how they financially present their product and the perfumer attached to them. Nobody buys perfumes solely because of the smell and nobody would even bat an eye at Patricia if she wasn't a Guerlain nepo baby that was discriminated by the industry because she was a woman. The same industry where the biggest and most influential people in its history are women. Luca is a kike hack that contributes nothing and says shit for free perfumes. Roja did PR at Guerlain, his whole brand is marketing and cult of personality just like Patricia, he's just good at it.

It’s very unfortunate that she didn’t stay with Guerlain, despite everything I believe she would’ve done a great job in a more marketing oriented role in stead of fragrance creation. I unfortunately don’t know many female perfumers, so I always welcome a little more diversity in the field, especially nowadays where the consumer is more in touch with the artist behind the scent. There are many perfumers who despite having little artistic or technical knowledge have thrived in the industry by virtue of their gender, and I think that sort of representation can be quite powerful, it’s sort of like with famous musicians. No one cares if Taylor swift writes her own songs or uses autotune, in the end she’s still the one performing on stage, and I think perfumery will be like that too one day. I have observed this very interesting shift in the industry, wherein less talented perfumers seek the limelight more to “counterbalance” the lack of technical know-how by creating something akin to a cult of personality. I am sure you can find many examples of this. I’ve particularly noticed this trend in some of Amouage’s interviews with perfumers, which seem to highlight the growing emphasis on personality and narrative instead of technical skill or being good at your craft.

>don’t know many female perfumers, so I always welcome a little more diversity in the field
While not perfumers the modern perfume industry was created by Coco Chanel in France and Estee Lauder in the US. Some of the top female perfumers are Daniela Andrier (Prada L'homme, Candy, Luna Rosa, YSL Rive Gauche, Gucci Envy for men), Christine Nagel (Hermes H24, D&G The One, Eau de Cartier), Anne Flipo (YSL L'homme, Libre, Rabanne Invictus, Phantom), Natalie Lorson (Lalique Encre Noire, Bentley for Men Intense, Le Labo Another 13, D&G K), Delphine Jelk (Guerlain Le Homme Ideal, Mon Guerlain), Marie Salagme (Margiela By the Fireplace, Beach Walk), Aliénor Massenet (Margiela Jazz Club, Memo African Leather), and many more. There has never been an issue with the representation of women in perfumery.

No, people here just like calling people Indian when they don't agree with them but don't have an actual argument. I find the subreddit fascinating with their obsession with getting compliments and balancing status within their means. It's my anthropological study into their society and through this lens into mainstream perfumery as a whole.

First off, if you like the way it smells, thats all that matters
So when I tried this it really smelled like a High quality but Basic summer frag. I hate the term, but it smelled "Designer" as in it lacked the real depth and complexity that you might expect from an expensive Niche fragrence. In comparison, Sedley is fucking amazing. It has a great opening which lasts for quite a while then the dry down is super masculine while being good in warmer weather.

I've started reading Scent and Chemistry, thanks for the suggestion anon!
I discovered quite a few interesting things, technical and historical, not lastly the common usage of "balsamic" in perfumery and that it's not at all what I thought and what I meant by it.
So I'll ask again (since you didn't answer last time booo), what are some interesting frags with prominent camphoraceous notes/accords (camphor, menthol, eucalyptol, cold, cooling, opens-up-your-nose) in your informed opinion?

It doesn't smell very smokey, it doesn't smell like most of the listed notes, and it certainly doesn't smell like cannabis, hashish and the likes.

What vibe do H24 and flankers have? Boring office scent?
>How do I ask for a recommendation in /frag/?
>Provide your age range
31
>Provide the season or climate you intend to wear the fragrance in.
four seasons, temperate
>Provide your ideal price range for buying a recommended frag.
0 bucks to infinite bucks
>Provide some details on what type of scent you are looking for (favorite notes and accords, hated notes and accords, etc.)
my favorite fragrances are cdg 2 man and eau de guerlain. i strongly dislike kiehl's original musk, it smells like public restrooms to me.
>Provide some details on your intended aesthetic and setting for wearing a scent (frag for school, the office, dates, casual daily wear, etc.)
i'm looking for an everyday fragrance that i can wear to work in an outpatient clinic. it shouldn't be too offensive or a common scent.
>fags I own
cdg 2 man (love it)
eau de guerlain (love it)
mitsouko (love it)
tauer 2 (like it)
shalimar (like it)
creed aventus (like it, half of my colleagues wear it)
at the barber's (like it)
fahrenheit (don't like it, smells like my dad)
oud malaki (don't like it)
kiehl's original musk (hate it)

one of the best 'fumes I've tried in a long time.
Incredibly pleasant, like a creamy Phantom. Inoffensive, divine scent. You get pineapple, you get flowers, you get creaminess. Also cashmeran. No harshness/sourness whatsoever from the pineapple, also no suncream vibe.
It doesn't feel heavy or deep at all. Very solar, happy and light.
overall stupidly easy to like and wear.
The only "downside" is that it lacks a distinctive character.

Why I oughta....
Is there a scent with an incense/smoky note which wears somewhat light? I've tried some of the big names like DHS '21, AdG Parfum, 2 Man, LADDM, Bentley Absolute.
Basically, something like this Ka-Fuh 'Aqua' incense I used to buy.

More than 11 years have passed so we can safely talk about this (I think).
You should definitely check out Royal Mayfair by Creed, it has very interesting camphoraceous and cooling notes, and seems like something you would find very interesting. Since you’re on your way to becoming an expert, and because you asked so nicely, I’ll also tell you what the cooling eucalyptus accord in the creed fragrance is made of:
Freskomenthe, Scotch Spearmint EO, Blue Gum Eucalyptus EO, Red Thyme EO, Citrylal E, Black and Pink Pepper EO.
If you’re still interested about Perfume after you’re done with the books, (given I’m still on this chat room) I’ll send you some formulas similar to those of popular fragrances (I can legally share) so you can start learning about the highest level of perfumery. I say similar because it would be illegal for me to send you the “real” deal

I suppose the lighter ones didn't have enough incense, and the smokier ones didn't have enough lighter notes (citrus, florals, aquatics). 2 Man is actually a good balance with its aldehydic opening. So maybe I'm like the poster above, who also wants something like 2 Man.

Thank you for the lesson, PerfumeAnon.
>Schiff bases hydrolyze slowly
This more than anything is (I think) what I was looking for, from the little that I knew I was assuming it was a chemical bond between two aromachemicals, but I didn’t think they would naturally decompose on the skin to their constituent materials, not to mention that their combined chemical structure would likely smell different. Does the original, undecomposed Schiff base duo material effect the scent much?
Also, is it safe to say that for the specific example of methyl anthranilate you’d get a fair degree of the grape-y scent it provides in the heart/base notes? Any other noteworthy Schiff base materials?
I had recently heard of an artisanal perfumer working on the topic to extend some citrus notes and it’s an interesting to me.
