Cartier is a design house. Theyβre always looking for new ideas. The notion that everything they come up with timeless is just silly.
In the quest to create cool looking watches, theyβll make plenty of watches with a timeless design, but plenty more that are cool for their era and look horribly outdated afterwards. Thatβs the nature of fashion.
Fortunately, theyβve had enough hits that they feel free to experiment which increases the likelihood theyβll come up with something new and interesting.

I don't get your point. Rolex has never been a "rockstar" brand, and it's not even trying to be one (just look at their ambassadors).
The OP, Explorer, and DJ are basically the same watch. The differences are entirely about storytelling
>OP is the trendy watch with flashy colors
>Explorer is the professional, heritage-inspired watch
>DJ is the status-oriented watch
In the real world, they serve the same purpose and are worn by the same type of people.

I like the Ocean Star and I don't really have a sports watch at the moment, except my Alpinist. Commander IcΓ΄ne is kind of nice but seems huge as shit, and for dress watch I think I still rather have Cartier or other tank type of watch.

Mido is a weird brand because their best looking options with proper specs and nice complications are either integrated bracelet, so you're married to the bracelet forever, or they're 42mm or more.
If you want a bog standard 40mm diver with date I think Certina has better and cheaper options. They even have a good looking titanium diver now, although there aren't a lot of color options for it yet. It's either this black with yellow lume or blue with white lume.

Save 200 more and we can find you a really good Seiko. For a hundo you're better off elsewhere. I could maybe find you a good vintage Seiko, perhaps even a quartz, on eBay or some other internet shop or whatever, but then there's shipping, and import duties, and taxes... And maybe you'd have to service it a bit... So it's a tough one for a hundred dollars.

Now you're comparing a mass-produced watch with a hand made one, produced in the few dozen each year. Huge difference in finishing and labor spent on one watch.
Rolex own their own factories, are practically vertically integrated and use proprietary tech. So no, Chinese replicas are not made in the same factories.

>Did W.O.E. pick it up at Khan el-Khalili Souk in Cairo to support a cover legend, or receive it as an honorary gift from a Middle Eastern intelligence service after an impactful operation? The truth is, it was purchased online. Amazonβs algorithm served it to me in early 2022, something that I even wrote an article about for Hodinkee. It is not a daring spy story, but it does say a lot about the state of technology and (commercial) surveillance. Amazon knew I would like this watch before I even knew it existed, and that is fascinating.

The real controversial opinion is there is not a single good Seiko. They're ugly as fuck, have terrible finishing, and the mechanical ones are regulated at -35/+45s a day.

I got myself a presage grasshopper a couple of weeks ago and I don't think it's bad for the money. The dial looks really nice and I haven't noticed it losing or gaining time so far. It feels a bit flimsy and lightweight compared to my carrera calibre 5 but that's several times more expensive so you'd expect that. For a dress watch it does the job well, it's a fun design that I can wear going drinking or on an afternoon out without worrying about having something worth a few grand on my wrist.
The main problem with the seiko is the bracelet, it's cheap uncomfortable shit.

A domed crystal is just the identity the watch is going for. It's supposed to be invoking 1950s omega watches. It's literally just the 34mm seamaster scaled up to 37mm. If that kind of watch isn't your thing then obviously you're not going to like it, but if you like that aesthetic the crystal is part of that.

A robot is not going to repipe your house, troubleshoot and repair your car or HVAC system, etc... You could build a machine that could do simple individual tasks like turning a bolt or welding/soldering one joint on a pipe, but you're not going to get a robot to travel on call and climb into an attic or crawl space or under your truck and find and do work on that shit. Same with autonomous freight driving, it sounds like a good idea in theory but the reality is the majority of the time truckers load and unload their own trucks so a person needs to be with the truck anyway. They may as well be driving it.

HVAC and and mechanic are just examples of trades. The point is a robot isn't going to be able to be adaptable enough to do troubleshooting and wide ranges of complex work in tight spaces or use judgment of space and purpose the way a person can. You can apply this to construction, welding, landscaping, boiler work, electrical work, masonry, cooking, and so on. This is all work that needs to be done, it's not going away. And there will still be administrative and clerical type work people will need to do, just in reduced numbers. There's no shortage of work society needs people to do. The only people severely effected by AI are exactly the people screeching about it online - hack writers, hack artists, and people who do customer service type bitch work.

You wouldn't have been able to afford one back then.

Too bad about the 19mm bracelet. I prefer my old 14270 with the 20mm bracelet and the classic lug profile. It gives the watch a better stance on the wrist.
I tried the new one out and it wears like a 34mm OP.
It makes sense that they would scale down the smaller one so women can wear it too, but the classic Explorer was so perfect.

The new bracelet is even better though. It's lighter and the taper makes it more comfortable. There's even less excuse to swap it out for a strap.
