I was excited to get into fragrances 3 months ago and bought a bunch of shit a cologne subreddit suggested and now I realized I don't really have the nose to differentiate smells. I just know if something smells good or bad to me. Should I just get rid of everything and get multiple bottles of the same line so I have a signature scent or continue rotating different scents?
Anonymous No.18509284
>>18509281
I hope you're right if you got all that shit in 3 months. Differentiating notes isn't important to you enjoying different scents. If you like to switch it up, then keep hem, if you enjoy the same scent for weeks on end maybe go with that, I personally get sick even of things I love after wearing it for a couple of days in a row.

Probably the best thing you could do for yourself right now is stop buying, stop consuming fragrance content entirely, spend the next few months thoroughly exploring what you already have, and maybe then sell off the bottles you don’t love.
Your tastes will change, and that is a ton of juice to go through

Delete reddit first, then keep rotating those fragrances. You have more than enough to wear them around the house or spray the back of your hand while you're scrolling so you can come back to the scent repeatedly and get a better feel for how it evolves and which notes come out as it dries. Your selections are good enough for noob variety, though probably bordering on excessive as there is a good amount of utility and genre overlap. If you decide you want to explore fragrance as a hobby or experience it as an art form, study the OP charts, learn how to use fragrantica search, pick out notes and fragrance types you're curious about, and for the love of god buy decants or samples first. I have about 50 fragrances but only a handful of fullsized bottles.

I got a bottle of Crabtree and Evelyn's Patchouli Cologne. I mentioned it last thread, here is my review: it smells like patchouli... big surprise. I guess I didn't know what patchouli actually smelled like, it's very sharp and very intense on its own. It has some earthy dirt undertones but you have to get through the sharp green and camphorus scent. I'm going to train myself to get used to it out of pure spite. Bull's Blood from Imaginary Authors was so trash and overbearing that it almost ruined patchouli for me. That's why I stopped wasting my time with cheap trashy brands since they can easily ruin notes for me.

You could if you know what you want but otherwise you should really focus on what you have and learn from it as much as you can. You definitely should stop spending your money. It's ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them and don't double down. There is really no bad collection if you like them but if you don't try to build a collection you're happy with.

There is nothing about Bull's Blood that would necessitate anything closed to a skilled nose. It's linear like all IA fragrances, and also has a disgusting synthetic smell. If you can't see how much unrefined patchouli there is in Bull's Blood you have me beat and I'm a certified noselet. Yes there is more to it but it's torturous to endure and an assault to the nostrils. If you are defending IA please reconsider your life choices, you could be shilling for literally anything else. It's the worst thing I have ever smelled and IA is the biggest scam in perfumery.

It’s very difficult for an untrained nose to pick out single materials in a fragrance, especially when you’re not familiar with the different aroma molecules that make them up. It takes a long time to learn, it took me close to a year, on the upside, I can now differentiate between EOs based on what metal they were distilled in. If you’re interested in familiarizing yourself with the different molecules that make up fragrances, my advice would be to buy as many aromachemicals you can find and smelling them at different dilutions. Regarding your collection, I think it covers every olfactory family, so I would hold off on purchasing more fragrances, especially the 100ml format. If you find yourself drawn to more scents, try with getting your hands on smaller bottles.

>>18509467
It’s only natural for hesperidic fragrances to have poor longevity (although I’m working to change that), and I understand how a more modern type of consumer could be put off by that, but it’s a great fragrance worth considering nonetheless, especially if you value the classic cologne style DNA which I think acqua di Parma utilizes wonderfully, while also making it more palatable to consumers with less refined tastes.

Think there's a general limit for fragrance price/quality. I've tried a whole lot of $300+ frags and none of them have justified the price in terms of quality or artistry.
And I'm not poor, I can afford to splash 500 on a frag if I like it, but I'm just yet to find one that was worth that money compared with frags around the 100 mark that work just as well

I understand /frag/ isn't huge on fragrances that are over $500 retail, but to me, those scents absolutely obliterate anything that can be had for $300, $200, much less sub $150. Samples came in bros.

Passage D'Enfer - A resinous, white lily, bit bubblegummy, dark scent. It screams FUNERAL. It has an intoxicating, dark quality to it, kinda like a kiss of a beautiful woman by the river who drowns you to death. Has a soapy drydown, though.

Aventus Creed - This is surprisingly more familiar to me than Sauvage. They're not lying about the pineapple opening. It's sour-sweet but not cloying, has a bit of greenness in it, leathery base is nice. Really good DNA. The projection is strong and it's long-lasting.

Hermes H24 EDT - I like this one. It smells vegetal, a bit metallic. It's like a futuristic take on aromatic fougere. I get tiny bit of of tea/unsmoked cigarette drydown, but no notes are listed can someone explain? Probably just my skin chemistry.

Serge Lutens L'orphelina - A warm, smoky-sweet fragrance. Has a mineralic drydown slightly reminiscent of Terre D Hermes. I expected straight up incense, but it's like a mix of white floral and incense. A bit more wearable than Passage D'Enfer. Surprisingly lean masculine.

Sauvage EDT - Honestly not as bad as people say. I thought it would be better than Y EDP due to its popularity but Y EDP still wins for me. I give it credit though, it's a good modern take on traditional masculine scent.

i'm looking for a fragrance I smelled a few times that I absolutely want to get my hands on.
It was a very smooth scent, very cozy but not in a warm or gourmand way, it was slightly sweet, clean smelling. I'm bad at identifying specific notes but it gave a comforting vibe, like a really luxurious laundry detergent or something. It's the kind of scent that could fill an entire room and it wouldn't be cloying.
Any idea what it could've been?

No, very very few people actually know what is in commercial fragrances, as the actual formulas are extremely well kept secrets. I don’t think fragrantica workers have access to them. The only reason I know is because I am working in the industry and have been involved in some creative processes for large fragrance houses. Be weary of people who say (or sell) formulas they claim to be originals.

Citrusy, green fresh and spicy, woody, earthy, the iris gives it a classy powdery touch but to me in this frag it's less powdery and more sparkly. Not sure how to describe it differently but in the air it comes across as sparkly and effervescent which gives this rather classy and mature DNA a more modern and youthful touch. Might be the combination of citrus and iris, not sure.

I didn't say a cologne concentration. Parfums are just not more fragrance than EdPs, than EdT.
I want something "lighter" than the EdT, in the blend, more citrus, less amber, slightly different wood profile, the smoke/incense can be the same as the EdT or some EdP batches.
Concentration could be either EdP or EdT.

Fragrances are a product and a product that lasts longer is a product that sells better but I always feel scents that last too long are never as good. They either turn into a synthetic mess, sickeningly sweet, or just straight up gross body odor. There is a sweet spot for me, certainly if I can smell something after an 8 hour work day that is a long lasting scent and often it still smells good. If I can still smell what I put on in the morning into the night then it's usually something I don't want to smell anymore because it has become unappealing. I'm not only talking about the base notes. Sometimes I spray something and it smells amazing but I can just tell it wont last long. Other times it's easy to tell it could have smelled better but they prioritized longevity. I feel it's easier to make a scent last longer than it is to make it smell better. I'm I way off on this?

TLDR: Any downsides to making a scent last longer?

I think so - My Fahrenheit is very heavy; too heavy for most of the year. The Parfum gets everything under vanilla which I think makes it much more wearable. It's still very heavy too - i'm not saying it's magically a light Hermes thing.
>Which are the best PDM?
Herod is the best of the house imo. Then it's a tie between Carlisle and Layton. I prefer the standard of both rather than the exclusif because the drydown is more airy on both. Then Oajan if you really like cinnamon. Someone on this board was talking about how it's a rip of Ambre Nargille but the Hermes lines are all very light and Oajan wants to be very heavy. In Marly I think only Herod is really worth the money, and the rest are optional if you can get a great deal on them.

Most importantly - Just get 5ml decants. If you just care about the smell and not the glasswork, then just pay $25 for a big sample instead of hundreds for these bottles you'll never finish.

As I previously discussed in another thread, a large portion of the briefs I receive outline tenacity, so I’m very familiar with increasing a fragrances longevity and projection. I cannot disclose what fragrances I’ve worked on, but I have worked with some major houses that have various concentrations of one fragrance, think EDT, EDP et cetera. In the case where I’m working on a preexisting fragrance, it’s a difficult game of balancing strong molecules (400+ hours on blotter) while also keeping a similar scent profile. The most challenging aspect of all this is trying to create a novel drydown that doesn’t end with the well known combination of iso E super and Ambroxan. I consider it a downside, but in the end my fragrances still sell (exceptionally well in some cases), so I’m not too worried about it. In the case where I can create a new formula, things get a little bit easier, I can experiment with different longer lasting aromachemicals, and if I’m working with a luxury fragrance house (and the price per Kg allows it) I use more costly types of Naturals. I am exceptionally fond of Labdanum absolute and Cypriol in oriental compositions and various types of Elemi in fresher fragrances. I think the real downside is not being able to fulfill your original vision because you have to build around very strong molecules that take your fragrance in different directions, so what could’ve been a very great fragrance might end up smelling very differently because of the inclusion of molecules that shouldn’t be there.

Makes me think of the 2000's around the time of my childhood of the spring and summer being outside, makes sense because its a 2006 release. Anonymous No.18511282
is it my nose, or the fragrance?
I notice this on some perfumes, but maybe occurs in all of them.
With CAHSEE, initially I got an oscillating pattern, like I got a whiff of sweet orange (and a little musk), and it oscillated to the tonka/vanilla. This would go on for some weeks until I got a more 'unified'/mixed scent, and the mint note became more prominent.
With TF Noir, I initially got a very bitter note just as it starts to dry down. 1 week goes by, and that is greatly reduced, and I get this powdery Habit Rouge/Shalimar in between.
Speaking of Habit Rouge, while I still find it somewhat harsh in the opening, it has rounded itself a little bit.
For Dior Homme Cologne, I used to get a slightly bitter note (some citrus leaf thing) in the dry down too, but it has mostly disappeared.
BdC EdT used to have this strong grapefruit that I liked, but a month later, I don't find it as intense, feeling it more ambery.
Allure Homme ed. Blanche, I used to feel it was a tarty lemon, and now it has again rounded (and I can appreciate all the other nuances)
Guerlain Vetiver also reduced its bitterness after some weeks, and it started to feel a little (very little) powdery.
Even my samples of TF Ombre Leather and Eros Energy changed. Ombre Leather feels less shitty, and the florals come up faster (the """leather""" is still not of my liking). Eros Energy used to have a weird thing on the drydown, but now, it has changed, and the pepper is not as intense.

Is this the power of oxidation? In a couple of days, weeks, 2 months at most?

Depends on concentration and your preference:
1. For aftershave or cologne you can splash some on your hands, lightly rub them together, then slide your palms over where you want the scent like neck, arms, even clothes. Real masculine and old school vibe.
2. For EDT you can cover the opening with your index finger and gently flip it over to get some on the tip of your finger, then use that to apply on your pulse points. You can repeat it for each pulse point.
3. For EDP and attars you can dab or do a little drop on your wrist then slightly rub them together and then use your wrists to apply where you wish. I saw a video where they applied indian attars how I previously described a cologne but that seemed excessive for something as concentrated as an attar but it explains those people who smell way too much.

I prefer the second method even for colognes because you can easily do it multiple times and with my bottles my index fits perfectly over the opening so it always feels like that is the intended design. My only concern is contamination, even though I use it after a shower I'm afraid of body oils going back into the bootle. I use method 3 for my attar but only do the wrists, I don't spread it all over.

You can get a syringe and pour some in a decanter with an atomizer. I have considered it but I only have a few and they seem to work well as a splash. It adds a nice variety and vintage feel to the collection.
