I'm pretty sensitive to fragrances and I can tolerate the ambride in this while others trigger my asthma. I believe it's because it's ambrofix instead of ambroxan and that brand is more rounded but considering your reaction it might not always be the case. I was getting overwhelmed once when I wore it to the office in the summer and the AC was broken.

Since you're familiar with the fragrance, can you help me understand why some people called it linear? The opening (citrus), middle (white flowers) and drydown (amberwood patchouli) are pretty distinct. Doesn't linear mean it's one note throughout? That doesn't seem to apply.

it is funny to experiment wearing them in public, especially in places you are likely to get into a conversation. i think most people (if they can smell them) just thinks of some kind of fabric softener when they pass me and half a second later they go on with their lives. pretty sure i can pull any feminine "pink" stuff but definetely not sweet gourmands and bakery scents (i also hate them). lastly there was a ck scent which reminded me of red lipstick smell/aesthetic which was a little too much for me

People hate this because they want to hate this
People hate this because either the higher ups at Dior or Kurkdijan himself fucked up.
They should have left Francois Demachy's excellent line in peace and built new fragrances. Instead someone at Dior was a massive dipshit and decided to start replacing Demachy's work because they thought they could. Perhaps it's FK himself. Either way, the fragrance is being review bombed because of the disrespect. It's a much simpler, more shower-gel-y, more designer fragrance than the amazing Dior Parfum used to be. I think Demachy's Dior Parfum can easily slot into something like the Guerlain Art and Material line and totally fit in as a woody / spicy masterpiece like Bois d'Armenie.

If you like this current iteration I would recommend (not kidding) Rabanne Phantom Intense. That's the only one in the line that has a good rating and it's legitimately good. It's got a smooth almost shower-gel feel and it has the same vetiver-patchouli base. If you want something less playful then maybe check Mugler Fantasm or Stellar; I think both are great and both have that classic patchouli-chocolate DNA

If you specifically want a designer Iris wood then try Givenchy Gentleman EdP Boisee. Rich buttery woody.

in most fragrance the coffee note is a background thing that most people miss so it's likely not going to be a problem. That said, the other Mugler skips it entirely.

If you need a recommendation on what to do - don't blind buy anything. Don't buy any fragrance until after you go to the mall again. Smell the Givenchy, Rabanne, and Mugler fragrances. You may also want to try Armani because Armani Code and Emperio Armani Stronger w/ You are also enjoyable. Smell this shit before you drop $100+ and don't buy it at the mall. You can get most of these at 50% cheaper at fragrancebuy or fragflex. What you may find is that you are looking for a much lighter daytime scent rather than the heavy wood iris thing.

I always recommend Montblanc Individuel, Prada L'Homme, Terre D'Hermes Eau Givree, Acqua di Gio Eau de Parfum as lighter daytime scents.

I also got a bottle (or should I say a test tube) of Halston Catalyst for Men. I got for the funny bottle and the 38 notes. It seems so strange. It starts surprisingly sweet with Lavander and spices. Quite early you can already pick up a bit of leather. Once it settles it has this strange note that I can't identify other than compare it to a mixture of latex gloves and iodine. It's quite dominant. All the notes sound like wishful thinking but if you try to find them you actually can without much difficulty, could be placebo. I have to say that's not always true of many other perfumes, sometimes the notes don't match what I can detect. It's true to vintage compositions where they smell like one simple unified scent and not like complex and distinct notes found in some modern perfumes. It's quite a masculine scent and a lot of women probably knew an uncle that wore something similar so they will recoil when they get a whiff. I do think it's quite interesting, but I would wear it conservatively unless it's one of those days when I'm mad at the world.

I remember smelling Society and Extreme and thinking this is a nice default kind of smell with designer (not dirty) lavender and candy sweetness. These are mall smells and FYI the best of the line is Eau de Parfum Ambrรฉe. I'll pull the Awake sample I have and give you the notes:

Up top sweet fresh coffee with some kind of coffee creamer, maybe hazelnut accord (smell composite) by what smells like thin citrus, coffee, amber and maybe cardamom. A very pleasant smell of specifically hot coffee. 20 minutes in and the cardamom becomes more obvious. The sweetness from the top was cardamom, and i'm getting a LOT of similarity to Terre D'Hermes EdP Intense which also has Lemon+Coffee+Licorice. That's something to smell at the mall, but this fragrance is lighter and more open than TdH EdPI. The lemon holds on pretty long because I think the Lemon+Licorice combo work well together. As the lemon fades the licorice takes over and the brain tricks you into thinking its still around. Feels like there's a base of light sandalwood. It's nice and approachable, but I personally prefer Terre EdP Intense. Btw the Akro discovery set is like $40 for 8+ samples which is super fair, and you get a coupon code for a fullsize bottle.

I don't know if I tried El but I tried a handful of Arquieste at a store. They were all nice and smelled like rich people and have a similar thread through all of them. I wouldn't blind buy because I would want to test it on my skin if I'm paying that much. It's a weird brand. They don't have a discovery set and they only have a handful of their fragrances as travel size. I sweat they are trying to keep the poors out by not offering accessible offerings. I wont give them my money until I can try something on for a couple of days.

I won auction lot that came with a sealed vintage Angel Men. I'm not a fan of sweet scents so I don't want to waste it. Should I rip it and test it out or save it to gift it to someone?

If you're not a fan of sweet then gift it or sell it. It's a legitimately excellent fragrance that rides the line between sweet and dry really well because of the patchouli.

Thanks for the description. I've actually tried TDH EDP Intense and liked it despite not being a fan of licorice, at least the taste. I've only smelled it on a tester for a bit but I'll give it a wear and if the drydown is good I might roll with that instead. The lava and stone notes put me off because it sounded like a gimmick but overall it came through as one of the more interesting offerings.

Did you test Tiger? I found it similarly stale-earthy-ish, I had a hard time placing the scent exactly, but somewhat similar to Owl, perhaps youโ€™d like it too.
And yes, their travel sprays are convenient, Iโ€™d never want to own a full bottle of T-Rex, but a travel is nice to use occasionally around the house or what not.
Iโ€™ve been thinking about picking up a travel of Orchid Mantis but Iโ€™ve been procrastinating. Still need to test Man-o-war as well.

Never tried El but tried several of their other offerings ages ago (Nanban, Anima Dulcis, Indigo Smoke, Sydney Rock Pool, A grove by the sea). The scents themselves are all pretty excellent, really great stuff, but the performance is lacking for my tastes. Indigo Smoke in particular caught my attention as a great tea scent, I havenโ€™t sniffed it in ages but from memory alone it was in the same neighborhood as Encre Indigo, if you enjoy it.

Yeah, I tested Tiger. I don't really remember it being a standout at all. The incense accord Zoologist uses sticks out like a sore thumb (at least to me) in most of the fragrances that use it and makes them all feel very samey. The ones that I liked enough to think about a larger purchase were
>Snowy Owl
>Civet
>Bee
>Rhinoceros
>Dragonfly
>Northern Cardinal

They had a few others that were very good fragrances and exceptionally well-executed in their vision and composition, like Squid and Beaver, but I couldn't ever imagine wearing them.

Agree 100% with Beaver and Squid, interesting and good, beaver seems a little more wearable than squid, but neither are particularly to my taste.

And itโ€™s funny you mention the incense note that stands out like a sore thumb to you, I didnโ€™t pick up on that, but what stands out to me is whatever they use as their โ€œsweetโ€ note. Bee has it the worst, this incredibly fake, off putting sweet note like artificial sweetener, but several other of their fragrances have it as well to a lesser degree, Moth, Hummingbird, Nightingale, maybe others too.

Penguin was my favorite and Iโ€™m working through a full bottle. As I mentioned T-Rex is fun for occasional at home use. I like Harvest Mouse even if itโ€™s an incredibly sweet gourmand. The Fuji Apple Macaque and Cow were interesting and not bad as well.

I'm almost entirely noseblind but my colleagues are way into colognes. They each take several colognes when going out of town. I was given a sampler of my favorite of theirs but I want to buy a sample pack of more earthy and woody scents. I am trying to avoid the body wash smell and I want it to last for a very long time.

there aren't many stores here (AK) so i kind of just want recs on where and what to buy, especially online, as common as that question may be.

Read the OP for where to shop. For earthy scents look at Patchouli heavy fragrances, for woody scents there are an infinite number of options like cedar and ebony. If you want to avoid body wash, avoid citrus, lavender, and pine, especially when combined with musks. Good luck. The most common recommendation for long lasting woody scent around here is Bois Imperial but so you can sample that to see if it's not too body washy for you. Try Tauer LDDM for a long lasting woody oriental and see if it's not too unique for you. Careful with strong woody scents, they might be great in cooler weather but suffocating in the heat.

It rarely even gets to 70f here so no worries about that, i just don't want people to smell me from far away and i don't want to have to freshen myself up very often. Does this mean I need a more oily and less alcoholy fragrance? What is the word for that?

>i just don't want people to smell me from far away
You want fragrances with low/moderate "sillage".
>i don't want to have to freshen myself up very often
You want fragrances with high "longevity".

It's not really about oily, but while "alcoholy" is not the technical term, higher alcohol content (learn about concentrations) fragrances like colognes and eau de toilet will project and have more sillage than lower alcohol content fragrances like parfums, which in turn will last longer. That's the theory, the reality is that it depends on the fragrances and the ingredients. Often you will find that the long lasting perfumes also project a lot but there might be some that have one more
than the other. In my opinion if you care about people not smelling you from far while having a long lasting scent I say focus on longevity because application matters more and is something you can control. If you spray your wrists (learn about pulse points) and neck it will project more than spraying your chest and inner elbows under a long sleeve. If you want to just smell yourself you can spray only your chest. Also remember that perfume lasts longer on clothes, and it shouldn't project too much since they don't have as much heat as your skin.
