/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - CHUKKAS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Is a service boot good for winter? A proper winter, but mainly commuting.
Anonymous No.18517622
>>18517608
Depends less on the actual service boot pattern, and more on the specifics of the boot
>upper leather (waxed roughout/waxed suede will hold up better against snow and salt)
>outsole (lugged soles will give you the best grip)
>gusseting (depending on how deep the snow you're walking in will be, you might want it to be either a fully or semi-gusseted tongue)
>construction (a proper leather midsole will keep temperature transfer to a minimum)
And of course, brush your boots, keep them conditioned/use protectants if necessary, don't wear them everyday, and it'll hold up just fine. Winters where I am are mild, but I've gone on vacation to places with "proper" winters and my boots held up just fine.

Saw a pair in person once. The leather is sturdy and thick, the boots were heavy and looked robust. But the heel was not stacked leather, rather some sort of plastic thing. How much of a dealbreaker is that?
Also, the website keeps mentioning the steel toe cap but the Red Wing dude on insta says they have no steel toe and tgey're unstructured.

Wouldn't just wearing them be a form of calisthenic training?

Figured out why I'm getting shin splints and it's a pretty dumb reason, it's only on days where I have to speed-walk to lectures and take longer strides, resulting in greater shock transfer. Other than that I can wear them indefinitely.

it is
but it will take ages to make progress and you will only get strong enough to manage the most common load
if you instead train you will get stronger quickly and you will get so strong that any walking or running or jumping won't hurt you
demand vs ability
without training you will just about match the most common demand
training gives you as good ability as you can get

>speed-walk to lectures and take longer strides,
Shin splints is usually from overuse of the tibialis, which happens when you speed walk and take long strides, you're probably flexing your feet and keep them tense. The raised heel allow/promote a longer unnatural stride, this is why running sneakers went from flat to having a raised heel with the idea that longer stride = faster run.
A natural shorter stride/mid foot strike engages the calf muscle which obviously much larger than the tibialis and is meant to absorb the weight and shock when running.

>>18520971
There’s no answer you can take and run away with, it depends on the defect. Grain break or loose grain won’t impede the longevity of the boot but an improper welt might, etcetera. If you’re picky or don’t know what to look out for, don’t get factory seconds.

Yes. Buying byproduct leather still makes the animal killing industry more profitable

(Unless the leather comes from some form of animal control, but even then its questionable because human activity is causing the need for the control in the first place and there can be corruption going on)

there are products like obernauf LP (heavy) which is both a conditioner and a water repellent
> what's even the point of conditioning?
when leather goes through a wet/dry cycle they lose some of the flexibility and they dry out leading to friction between the fibers and eventually cracking, conditioning prevents that

don't over condition tho, that can have a negative effective too

Chromexcel is everywhere so everyone has an opinion on it. That and the mindshare Horween has (with the price premium to boot) means there are going to be contrarian takes about it.
There's nothing particularly wrong with CXL, it's just not as good in some respects compared to other leathers (e.g. not as tough and water-resistant as waxed flesh, not as patina-friendly as veg-tan etc.), and of course the CXL lottery due to the common notion that it creases like a bitch (which is less due to CXL itself and more due to how much of the hide factories choose to use)
