Got a bottle of Aramis Tuscany Per Uomo. Predictably very fatherly but surprisingly very sweet and smooth. I always credit smoothness to sandalwood so this must have lots of it. The citrus top notes are so fleeting I could honestly not decipher them because of the age of the bottle but it was nice if brief. You get some nice smooth leather notes, I could not pick apart the spices, typical of its vintage the scent is very uniform but the spices are indeed nice. You get a little oakmoss as it settles but not much. Usually through use I can get the scent disassociated but I don't think this will ever be anything but a cozy gentle dad scent.

Are perfumes carcinogenic?
Anonymous No.18521434
>>18521420
Lets assume the following
>1 spray = 0.1ml
>Extrait concentration of 25% perfume oil
>Perfume oil has the same density as water (it's lighter but this is for the sake of math)
>40 line formula with all ingredients of equal portion
>15 ingredients with carcinogenic potential

Lets say you arent a sissy sprayer and wear 10 sprays per day only on pulse points, so 1ml of perfume sprayed on the skin resulting in 250mg of perfume oil on the skin, roughly 94mg of which is carcinogenic. If we use benzene as a model carcinogen, which works given that it is a volatile chemical like perfume oils (it readily evaporates), my searching indicates that up to 20% of benzene applied to the skin is absorbed. So applying 20% absorption to our model would result in about a 20mg per day exposure to carcinogenic compounds at the high end. If we look back to studies on benzene and assume that perfume oil ingredients is as carcinogenic as benzene, this would definitely put you in the exposure level that is associated with increased risk of cancer, if you used perfume as I described every single day for decades.
The reality is more likely that you aren't using that many sprays of extrait directly on your skin every day, as well as that the IFRA is doing at least a somewhat okay job at weeding out dangerous chemicals, so fewer carcinogenic ingredients (or a smaller concentration of them) are allowed in perfume. These ingredients are also likely only a fraction of the carcinogenicity of benzene, lowering the risk even more. So I would say no, perfumes are not carcinogenic.

Decided to double down in case I die tomorrow and open up my boxed Gucci Envy for Men. It starts off very sweet but a lot more modern than I expected with the ginger and mandarin. My definition of modern being post 1990s, and into the 2000s when ginger and mandarin becomes ubiquitous. Those notes are pretty strong and linear hiding other notes behind them, you get a peeks of the carnation, leather, and woodiness which is when the fragrance can rightfully be labelled as a bit dated. I'll be honest, other than the sweetness there nothing I might find offensive in the fragrance, but there is also nothing that pulls me in. It's nice, it's well done, maybe during release it was more notable but right now it seems a bit uneventful. I try not to expect much from fragrances and this is definitely something that you can wear on a relaxing evening but I want a little more of a kick. In terms of performance I can tell Envy will last and project enough, but in terms of unique and captivating notes I don't think it scratches my itch. I'll keep trying it and maybe in a chill autumn evening it will blossom. To be clear I don't think this is the fault of the perfume but of my tastes leaning into dryer and less refined scents. It's settling down into a smokier and leathery scent, just not enough. If it was a lot smokier with the ginger toned way down and maybe more indolic florals it would be more my tastes but it would also be a different fragrance, a real "if my grandmother had wheels" situation. I can see why people like it, it performs well and just works, it would make a great signature scent. Sometimes I just wish I could skip to the end. The base notes are nice and smooth, just have to eat the sweet ginger dessert on the top notes first.

Demachy did Colonia Oud for AdP which has some glowing reviews and seems to be among the lesser worn releases from the house. Not terribly expensive too. I would avoid LV fragrance especially ON because they are popular among blacks. I also have a sample of Oud Maximus from Bortnikoff (which gets a lot of hate on here but anyway) and while it is very strong and I was expecting it to smell like feces its really not terribly offensive. Could be worth picking up some of the tamer ouds from them like Mysterious Oud if you’re already considering stuff in the LV price bracket.

Thanks for the recs, I don't live in a major town or anything so the only "high end" scent DNA I smell regularly here is BR540, otherwise it's just the usual Sauvage, SWY, Le Male flankers or whatever. The nice thing about living in a <1M population city is that pretty much any fragrance outside of the Sephora top 20 will come off as unique.
Sounds good, I'll try to see if I can sample those. So far I haven't really tried any funky/fecal ouds, unless the Frederic Malle desert gems qualify (I didn't find them very offensive or even challenging though). But I'd rather not experiment for now and stick to a relatively clean, pleasant oud

As a parting gift I’ll leave something everyone here will love, the formula to the messageboards favorite fragrance; below is a formula that gets very close to Dior Homme intense.

30% iso e Super
15% Methyl dihydrojasmonate
10% Galaxolide
5.8% Diethyl phthalate
5% Ethyl linalool
5% Bergamot oil ( or Bergamote 000136 which is used in the real one, but I think the real bergamot is a vast improvement)
5% Lavandin grosso oil
5% Musk ketone
3% Linalyl acetate
3% Vertofix Coeur
3% Methyl dihydrojasmonate high cis 70%
2% Alpha isomethyl ionone
1% Patchouli oil Indonesia
1% Bacdanol
1% Ethyl linalyl acetate
1% Coumarin
1% Butylphenyl methylpropional
1% cis 3 Hexenyl salicylate
0.5% Olibanum oil
0.5% beta Ionone
0.3% Ethyl vanillin
0.3% Orris butter
0.2% Butylated hydroxytoluene
0.2% Haitian vetiver oil
0.1% alpha Irone
0.1% Delta damascone

You can use this to create your very own Dior homme intense, I hope it inspires someone.

I’ll be back once the quality goes up again, as most of you people are very friendly.

I put the DHI formula above into a robot and told it to determine health hazards with a focus on carcinogenic potential, here is the summary it gave me. Maybe you will find it interesting.

Bottom line (cancer focus)

Recognized cancer concern at normal fragrance exposures: none on this list, with the special case that bergamot oil (and other furocoumarin-rich citrus oils) can contribute to photo-carcinogenesis under UV if not used within IFRA phototoxicity limits / if bergapten isn’t minimized.

Often-asked about items:

DEP: not treated as a carcinogen by major authorities; negative/limited animal cancer data at tested conditions.

Nitro musks (e.g., musk ketone): IARC Group 3 (not classifiable); some older animal signals but inconsistent; other hazard classes drive restrictions.

BHT vs BHA: BHT is Group 3 (not classifiable); BHA carries stronger listings (separate compound).

Lilial (BMHCA): EU ban is for reproductive toxicity, not cancer.

How do you use it with sunscreen?
I live in a very hot, sunny area. UV index is always 10-11. Try to avoid being outside unless necessary. I use La Roche-Posay Anthelios (less greasy otc that still works that I've found), reapplying every 2-3 hours. 4 at the very worst.

trust me, people absolutely use some of the gourmands in summer, scandal pour homme edt is one of the most common scents I come across in uni from the younger students.
If I had to guess, it's something "molecular", probably made by Bisch.
However, we are in an era of microtrends, where almost nothing sticks, and giga zoomers are dabbling in anything and everything, so I wouldn't be surpriseed if we had to wait 10 more years for THE new THING after sauvage, considering that it was 20 years between le male and sauvage

1. kenzo is not considered on the normie radar, the fragrance would need to be HUGE, in order to actually elevate the status of kenzo.
2. the kenzo frags that bisch did have too much calypsone, too much akigala and are just not that good in general, calypsone in that dosage is too divisive.
3. they were also simply too cheap, that tacky bottle had no chance of becoming a closet staple in the current climate

Dior has tried something with the same vibe with its new DH line but it was too light, inoffensive and office-safe. YSL seems to want to go all out with unisex florals (MYSLF, Libre) and it's catching on pretty well although it's still pretty generic. Who knows though, everyone seems to love MYSLF, so maybe one of the flankers will end up being very hyped
Chanel is either dead or literally working on the new Sauvage seeing as they haven't released anything noteworthy since BdC which was the only frag that rivaled Sauvage in popularity

in general the EDT whilst a bit on the sloppy-gourmand side, is well done, and not cloyingly sweet, if I were to compare it to the current le male offerings it would look like this:
le male le parfum > le male elixir > le male elixir absolu > scandal > le male > Le Beau Le Parfum > Le Beau > Le Beau Paradise Garden > ultramale > Le Beau Flower
og le male would be higher but current formulations are just sad.

I’ve been resisting the urge to pick this up recently and think I’ve finally committed to passing on it. It gets a lot of hype and is an interesting take on leather, but I’m fairly certain I would almost always reach for something else over this. Iron Duke when it’s cooler, Fahrenheit if it’s warmer.

I like the overall profile it’s just not quite enough to be better. This is also ignoring the presumption it’s discontinued.
