/wt/ Watch Thread
Watch-on-wrist Edition

This thread offers a forum to discuss and debate wristwatches, pocketwatches, and clocks. Several members here are highly knowledgeable in specified areas of horology, so please contribute to the thread by asking questions and/or asking for advice if you are planning on purchasing a watch from an AD or the grey market. Please post pics of your watches here; it doesn't matter if it's worth 5$ or 5,000$, because there might be someone who wishes to eventually purchase the same model that you own and would love to hear some real-world advice regarding ownership. The experience matters the most, not the price.

Everyone is welcome in this thread, because we are all Frens here.

I'm trying to find pics of it on wrist, to maintain the theme. I always liked this one.

Incidentally, I have been wavering quite close to getting a modern 3861...it is calling out to me. Thinking Sapphire Sandwich...we'll see.

Have you seen either in person? I find that colours never match what I see in pics. I was able to have a good look at the new FOIS in person a few months ago, and realized that the blue colour doesn't look as blue (more like dark blue/black/grey) and the faux patina lume plots look like diarrhea. As you can probably guess, I didn't get it. There are other problems with that watch too (most notably that the hands are illegible), but at least Omega tried.

>>18524977
Looks awesome on you, Fren. Thank you for letting me know how it's running - I don't own any co-axials, and I've only heard great things about their performance (especially the Master Chronometers), so it helps to know that yours is running wonderfully. I have the old 1861 as well, and both the 321 and 1861 have tolerances of 12 and 14 seconds a day, so a Speedy Pro that is out of the factory within chronometer specs is a new concept for me (although Omega did a chronometer spec back in the day...I think it was a Gold special edition or something from the 90s, can't remember). My watchmaker has kept the 321 within 1 second a day, but I had to get the 1861 serviced by Omega a few months ago and I've just left it as is (around +4 per day) because I can always reset it when necessary. Did you get the on-the-fly adjustable bracelet? Do you like it? Are you ever worried about servicing in the future, since you'd have to take it to a watchmaker who is trained in co-axial lubrication? Finally, what made you choose the sapphire sandwich over the hesalite? Great to see it!

>Did you get the on-the-fly adjustable bracelet?

>Do you like it?
Watch? I love it. I have it for 3 months and I feel like it's part of me now. Bracelet? I didn't like bracelets before this watch (maybe because all I've experienced was casio) but this one feels great. Plus the polished inner links make the watch feel a bit more like jewelry. I still wear it on nato or sailcloth more often tho, at least during the summer cuz my hands swell easily.

>Are you ever worried about servicing in the future, since you'd have to take it to a watchmaker who is trained in co-axial lubrication?
I mean I planned just to go to Omega when the time comes, but now when you said that I guess I need to do some research? My brother is deep into the watches so he'll probably know a guy.

>Finally, what made you choose the sapphire sandwich over the hesalite?

It's meant to be "one and done" watch for me so I picked something that's more practical. The display case back is cool af too.

You’re not wrong, it IS a meme. It’s still a very decent watch, but because it’s babby’s first β€œreal” watch and because so many sticky virgins make the Speedmaster their whole personality, it carries a bad reputation.

You get points for the Marathon and the Tissot, those are cool.
The rest is horrible, especially the fake Rolex. No one who could afford a GOLD Rolex would wear any of the shitters you wear otherwise, so you're just signaling yourself as a cope fag and a fake person.
The Addiessive looks horrible, the "android" is like a 45mm from the look of it, it's migrant/flea market territory.

tldr; i'd keep the Marathon and the Tissot, get rid of the rest, and wait untill i can afford a proper third watch for a good 3 watches collection

I like collecting watches, but, as many before me, I reached the conclusion that I don't want to regularly wear more than three watches. In fact, I end up wearing pic related for the vast majority of the year. So much so that other watches feel "off" to me. When I hear or read or think "watch", I associate it with the feeling of the white birch. It's probably a sign of me having found what I'm looking for in life and have no need to look no further.
I still enjoy reading and talking about watches, about innovations or clever designs, but I stopped thinking of acquiring another one.
Friends of mine have done kinda the same. One is wearing his Tank and Santos back to back while he owns at least 30 watches in his collection, another one is wearing exclusively his orient, and I haven't see another friend of mine wear anything but his panerai carbon for at least 6 months now.
Is that what "exiting the game" feels like?
I only wear my moser on special occasions and my tudor when I'm doing rough things like mountain hikes or sports.

Sometimes, you know you've found the one, but yet you still look around and want to try others.

Thank you, SpeedyChad - I appreciate your real-world thoughts on this. I'm glad the watch fits well, and that the bracelet does feel good. I've tried on the watch numerous times, and the bracelet is superior to the older one by a fair margin. Regarding the servicing - don't worry about it; I only mention it because my watchmaker is older and wasn't trained by Omega in the co-axials, so it has always been something in the back of my mind. I've had great experiences with my Omega AD with regards to servicing, but it seems that it's regionally dependent. Some people have complaints, especially in the US, so it's a give and take. There are independent watchmakers who are trained with Omega co-axials, of course, so it's just a matter of research and finding someone you trust.

I was thinking Sapphire Sandwich too, but only because I don't have one. Also, I like the applied Omega logo, the polished areas of the bracelet, and seeing the movement. Yours looks great, wear it in good health!

>>18525096
What watch are you waiting for? I think my Rolex AD was a little irked that I bought my SeaDweller used on the grey market...but it's not like they'd sell me anything I wanted anyway. Their servicing is impeccable though...

Bad reputation? That's the first I've heard of it. True, it's usually one of the first 'real' watches that a non watchgeek will buy, but it's because it has a combination of elements that are appealing at an affordable price. You can get an 1861 for around 3.5 or 4kUSD, and it's got the moon connection (tangentially, but still there), a design that is iconic and legible, and recognizable in the watch community. What other watch has those things (history, price, and respect)? Submariners are more expensive, and although the Bulova was worn on the moon, the modern Bulova has the design shell but a quartz movement. Granted, it's much more affordable, but will not have the respect in the community due to the lack of a mechanical movement.

As for people making a watch 'their whole personality', I'd agree to that for sure. You see the same thing with the Paneristi, or Rolex owners who are 'building their relationship' with their AD. Human nature.

>>18525370
Yes, it does CredorChad. If I reduced my collection to what I wear the most, it's the 1966, the Holy Grail, and 'everything else'. If I were near water more often, I'd wear the Seamasters or the Rolex more, but quite honestly I could be quite happy with just the two Speedies. The thing that makes me happy however is having the variety to choose from. If I feel like something dressy, I can do Reverso, and if I feel like something precise, I can go Citizen. In other words, I have variety to assuage my mood. I do seem to require this, but I haven't bought a watch in a while because I seem to have hit the point where I have a watch for every mood requirement. I've looked at Zenith, more Omegas, but they all feel like variations on a theme to me now, and I have the ones that I truly want anyway. So, maybe you're at the point where your choice hits the mark for you at this point in life where you live now. Enjoy this moment, because watches are taken care of in your life.

To put it blunty, any vintage Seiko movement is not only easy to service but also replacable since they are all compatible with the NH movements.

Omega movements are in comparison far more fickle and annoying to get replacement parts for - every single Cosmic i've seen was trashed like a motherfucker whereas these cheap seiko 7009 can be found in mint condition, fairly easily. They are also kind of overpriced for what they are at this point - mostly due to the Omega namesake.

The "luxuriousness" of Rolex is generally overrated (oh wow you made an incomplete calendar and it only took you 30 years, congratulations you are now on par with where everyone else was in the 90s), that's one thing to keep in mind but as far as UN is concerned they have a few things over Rolex :
>UN is in another universe when it comes to complications
>UN has better craftsmanship, as in they have craftsmanship in the first place whereas Rolex is pretty much entirely made by machines and operators
>UN has a history of innovation in recent years which is worth mentionning. See how everyone is moving to silicon hairsprings? They did it first.
>lesser known brand so you can have something that's not going to be on the wrist of every 50-something having a midlife crisis
It comes with some drawbacks though :
>lesser known brand so nobody will know or care what your watch is aside from turbonerds who will likely just know about the Freak
>"unique styling" aka most of their watches look horrendous and are huge
>all-proprietary for an independant brand, meaning service will take forever and cost a ton
>prices are not very competitive. Their least expensive watches (time and date titanium Diver with a home-built ETA with modifications thus likely to be some end of stock and soon to be discontinued ; and Torpilleur in steel, date and power reserve) are 8k and 10k at retail. I don't need to tell you that you have "better options" if you care about specs
>no value retention whatsoever if that's something you care about
Are they "more luxurious" than Rolex? I would say yes, easily.
Are they CONSIDERED more luxurious than Rolex by most people? No, because most people have a seriously inflated idea of how luxurious Rolex is, and no idea of what makes Ulysse Nardin what they are. And a lot of their models won't have a "luxurious look" at first glance. ESPECIALLY their divers which are mostly titanium

You can get quite a serious variety, vintage and modern, for 7k USD. At that point, your best bet is literally to do a Chrono24 search with your budget and just go through what's there. Any El Primero base will be fine, but you could go as crazy as one of those 1/100th second chronos (they're awesome), or as simple as a 3-hander dress watch. I have always loved their 'Pilot' watches (the older design with cathedral hands), but I have always wanted another Zenith pocket watch too. Hell, you could get one of their Deck chronometers in that price range. It all depends on your design priorities, as the general watch should be fine. If I had to recommend, I'd do one of the Shadows...I like those.

Yes, the movement is complicated, however I am well acquainted with an owner who has had one from purchase at the AD, and it's been flawless for years. He uses it at the track daily, so he probably uses the chronograph function as much as I use mine. He loves it, and though the design line isn't to my liking (the dial is unbalanced), I really do love the engineering of it, and it's nice to see it zip around. If you bought one grey market, just get it serviced from Zenith and then wear-and-enjoy. There is no maintenance other than the normal 'service it every 7-10 years'. What else do you need to do?

Admittedly, I am not fearful of the 'hard to maintain and expensive to repair' concern. There's not much I can do to a watch to break it. Watches are luxury items; if you want something that won't break, a digital Casio will be just fine. The more complicated a watch is, the more that can go wrong if it wasn't properly serviced by the last technician, and furthermore, the more complicated a watch is, the higher the possibility that something is broken or damaged DURING disassembly/reassembly and servicing. Therefore, the way I see it is that a complicated watch comes with complicated ownership; it's part of the package. That's why you take your watch to the manufacturer or a watchmaker you trust.

Online you can find vids from Lange owners (for instance) who have had trouble with the service that Lange provides...that's awful to hear, but reminds us that these are expensive wind-up toys and not much else. Sure, they are aesthetically remarkable, but they're still wind-up toys that need care and attention when they are taken apart.

I wouldn't take my Grail to just any watchmaker - they'd have to have a known history of servicing that movement. If my Citizen needed servicing, I'd send it to Japan. Anyone could service the ETA or Valjoux based movements, but there is only one man I trust with my vintage 321. All watches require care.

Stainless Steel Sub or GMT, and all you have in the purchase history is a Speedy from 15 years ago? Good luck with the wait, Fren. In the past few years, the calculation appears to be 2 Datejusts (non-precious metal, mens and ladies, or some combination of the OP and Tudor, as long as it comes to the same value) to get a stainless Sub, and Sub plus a precious metal to get a GMTII. Normal GMT1 should be available at the same price point as the stainless Sub though. You may have to consider buying something else to help you to be higher on the list (maybe jewellery?), or go grey market and just buy it direct.

idk, my sales associate wasn't pushing me to anything other than sub or gmt. my AD literally only has Rolex--no Tudor, no jewelry. no hint of quid pro quo. and in another AD I went to they were pretty clear that a gmt or sub could be a multi year wait. so i am hopeful that the preexisting relationship is going to help somehow

In that case, you can't lose getting an OP and/or Datejust to bump you up. If you're in a big city, it'll help. If you're in a smaller market, you might have a chance with less, but it's rare now that you could get allocated a stainless steel Sub with just 6k spent over a decade ago. If it happens, definitely let us know, and you should stop by the Rolex forums to let them know too because it would buck the trend and be a shining light to those also waiting.

after the covid buxx started flowing, a lot of money went to them. rolex didnt increase supply so all this money flowed into the secondary (grey) market. so if you want to buy from an AD you have to either wait or try to get what you want by buying additional stuff you're not so interested in (jewelry, less desirable watches, etc)

for certain pieces, the secondary market value can be >2x retail msrp

It's good, but not as good as the old Superluminova that both Rolex and Omega used. I've tested it against my 2254.50, and that outlasts it by a country mile. Actually, it's the only thing I hate about the watch....the lume sucks. The crazy thing is that it's the same with all modern Rolii, only the SeaDweller/Submariner/GMTII use the same dial set for the hour plots, and they all look weak. The other thing I noticed is that in the deep of the night, the hour hand is not large enough to be legible easily, and due to the design, it can be misinterpreted by hour (i.e. a point to 2 might look like a point to 3). I was used to Omega lume for years, so to see this was very disappointing. Even my Reverso has better lume.

>>18528766
To be honest, Fren, what I'm saying is that the AD doesn't care what you want or what watch you're interested in to jump the queue. All that matters is how much money you've spent. If you were on the Rolex forums as long as I was, the calculation was, at its worst, pretty remarkable. In 2021, if I wanted to get a stainless steel Daytona from my AD, I would have had to spend at least 60,000USD to be potentially allotted one. It would be easy to jump the queue by buying a Day-Date, OP, and Datejust, but I don't want any of them. So, if I wanted a Daytona, it would make more sense to just pay the grey market price for one. You can back-track and calculate other people on the forums who bought their watches from their AD and what they had to spend, whether it was jewellery, random awful Tudors, etc., but it still comes to roughly the same amount of money.

The ADs are interested to find out if you're a flipper or a collector, but that only pushes you higher on the list if you spend money there. Money is all that matters. So, that's why I say 'good luck'.

The crazy thing about it is that there are people who have a philosophy to only buy retail and never buy above. If you run the numbers, it's absurd, and the justifications you read are borderline insane. 'Yeah, I bought that jewellery for my wife, but I was going to buy jewellery anyway'. 'Yeah, I bought that Tudor Black Bay, it's cool', 'Yeah I got that OP because it's classic'...it's all the same. You ask them if they wear these watches at all now that they have what they want, they either say 'no', or 'I sold that years ago'. It's all the same, and I can't blame them.

If I had a Tudor Black Bay and then got allotted a Submariner, I'd never wear the Tudor again. Why would you? Tudor Prince vs. Rolex Day-Date? Same thing. The cope that you have to read about it is awful - sure, they won't pay above retail, but they'll spend 4x the price of the watch on other watches just for the chance to be allotted one...if they get one, they STILL have to spend more to get it. They got a Daytona at retail, but the total spent was 75k. It's amazing and absurd.
