/wt/ Watch Thread
High Accuracy Quartz edition

This thread offers a forum to discuss and debate wristwatches, pocketwatches, and clocks. Several members here are highly knowledgeable in specified areas of horology, so please contribute to the thread by asking questions and/or asking for advice if you are planning on purchasing a watch from an AD or the grey market. Please post pics of your watches here; it doesn't matter if it's worth 5$ or 5,000$, because there might be someone who wishes to eventually purchase the same model that you own and would love to hear some real-world advice regarding ownership. The experience matters the most, not the price.

Everyone is welcome in this thread, because we are all Frens here.

There was this Brazilian guy in late 2010s who convinced many /wt/ users (through sheer spam and determination) that a specific store in Tokyo, Japan sells cheap non-franken vintage watches and that he bought quite a few from there. He guided many users from here to that specific store (I think it's closed now, can't find it on c24 anymore) and well, after a while and many, MANY sold watches later, an experienced user opened the watch and found a different movement inside his vintage grand Seiko than what was supposed to be in. Other users later found out re-polished cases, different backs, wrong crystals etc. turns out this Brazilian guy, whuertantonio, was working there all along. Brazil has a big community in Japan so it makes sense. And obviously many users here are still mad about it.

Some say he's still out there, selling under a new name, watching the very threads that cursed him. Others believe he disappeared into the same shadows of Tokyo where his legend began. It just dawned on me; Tudor is actually better than Rolex.
Tudor is a master chronometer while Rolex is "superlative". What does that mean in practise? Rolex doesn't even do third party certification on them, instead they do their own testing and deem it "better".
I'm so glad I went with my BB54, after getting it, I don't even think about Rolex. In a world where Rolex screams status, Tudor whispers taste. A Rolex is the billboard of success, but Tudor? It’s the secret handshake of those who know better. You pay less, yet get a sibling forged in the same firesβ€”Swiss precision, timeless design, and none of the "look-at-me" hysteria. A Tudor is a poet's watch; a Rolex, a salesman’s pitch. Why spend double to impress strangers when you could spend less and impress yourself?

The Seiko watch is more mechanical, relying less on integrated circuits compared to the Citizen. The Citizen's date change occurs smoothly at midnight, but it feels less dynamic than the Seiko's lightning spring-loaded snap, even if the Seiko doesn't change exactly at 12:00. I prefer the Seiko's quick action over the Citizen's languid shift but would prefer to have both insta-change and snap. Oh well
The Seiko can be fine-tuned for accuracy over time, while the Citizen's module remains fixed at its original accuracy, which often falls short of its specifications.Owners report that the Seiko is more consistent with its claimed accuracy. The Citizen's module might be replaced (not sure) rather than repaired during servicing, which diminishes its luxurious appeal if that's true,as disposability is not luxurious in horology. In contrast, the Seiko movement is repairable.
If the Citizen is used daily and receives adequate light, it can last perhaps 15 to 25 years before needing a battery replacement. The Seiko could theoretically last the same duration, but it requires multiple battery changes over the years, each posing a risk of damage. The Citizen is a solid unit that generally doesn't need fucking with unless there’s a defect or the battery is EoL.

I appreciate the practicality of The Citizen but value the Seiko's mechanical complexity and long-term tunability. If you can own only one luxury HAQ and typically prefer wearing mechanicals, then a The Citizen with eco-Drive is a sensible choice: just keep it out of a drawer and charged and it is ready to go at a moments notice, with the correct date, if you're in a rush and cbf winding and setting a mech. Ultimately, it's best to select a watch based on what you think looks and feels better right now as only time will tell who made the "correct" choice. Let all tomorrows /fa/g/gots worry about the procurement of early 20th century microelectronics and chemical batteries; (you)'ll be too dead to give a shit.

something i think about for people who do not like Rolex:
i love Horology, and i appreciate different watches.
i have worn many watches in my life, but when i think of the one watch i want to use daily for the rest of my life it is Rolex.
that is because of my criteria for a watch i want on my wrist for a lifetime.
it has to be durable, its has to be tough as shit and not dent or scratch easily, and
it has to be able to take a beating.
it needs to tell precise time, and keep itself wound without the need for a battery.
it needs a timer on it, and the date function. (although i think a day date sub would be cool)
it needs to be waterproof,
IT NEEDS TO BE WATERPROOF.
i need a watch that i can wash daily to get the grime and dirt off of it without fear of it breaking or stopping from water intrusion.
many watches say they are water resistant or even water proof to whatever, but in my experience all of mine have had issues with water except for the Rolex.
it has to look good and impress me, because i am the one that has to see it all the time, and wear it all the time for the rest of my life.
i will never understand people that purchase a Rolex to appease others.
my brain does not work like that..
if you are not in love with your watch, it is not the watch for you.
i am in love with Rolex, sure there are many other watches, and they may be cheaper, or even more expensive, but they do not have what i require.
if it means paying more for a watch that is a well built tank that will last lifetimes (s) then so be it.
i will take a stainless steel sub please.

The easy rule of thumb is that if you just want to post your watch, do it here. If you would be able to talk about your watch without posting a pic of it (apart from certain circumstances like asking if your watch fits your wrist or if a new strap looks good) then do it there.

>Why are they excluding Seiko and Citizen there?

That’s what, I think, prevents the two threads from being able to coexist. This thread generally has a lot of banter in it and, let’s be honest, most people can’t handle banter. They assume they’re being trolled. So they decide to β€œget revenge” by trolling the other thread.

>be me
>aiming for a minimalist watch Seiko KS GS collection
>not really comfortable spending big money for watches and would like to balance the expenses with my other hobbies, so the collection would only be complete in many years to come

Now I've been eyeing the KSK SJE103 Garyu bai for a while and found a good deal brand new for 2.3k before this Tag suddenly showed up in my feed out of nowhere.

A used Tag Carrera chrono Year of Dragon 2024 LE 300pcs for around 3.5k, around 50% off of market price, reputable local seller. Personally went to the seller's place myself to inspect the watch, smooth with minimum signs of wear, complete box and card. Found out only 3 pcs are distributed in my country.
I was born in year of dragon myself and my chink name translates to golden dragon so the thought of having a dragon watch really fired me up.
Thing is, this would be my first big purchase and I'm just afraid I could have FOMO because of that 50% off and once in a 12 years chance of getting a dragon watch. The tag dragon was not in my radar previously while the KS garyubai has always been in my radar, but that 50% off really shifted the landscape. I'm also not so comfortable with the budget jump from 2.3 to 3.5

Another thing is I'm more of a simple dress watch guy and I don't really find chronos or complications worth it. I did enjoy testing the tag dragon on my wrist, it does look cool and ticked the box emotionally for me as a dragon watch. But I'm sure I would enjoy the bling factor of KS bracelet and the fume red garyubai dial more since it's more of my style.

So anons is this a once in a blue moon chance for me and should I get the tag dragon or is this just FOMO and should I stick with the KS garyubai?
>inb4 get both
Technically I could, but the thought of spending that much extra money made me nauseous.
Currently I've booked the tag dragon for a week with minimum charge so I still have a week to make a decision

how long have you been looking at dragon watch? sounds to me like you want the KS but are just infatuated by another watch atm. maybe you got cold feet for the KS, were desperately searching for "better deal" and found this dragon watch as an excuse to prolong the search

by just looking at them, between the two, id pick KS without a doubt. it is nicer looking and higher quality watch. it's got flare, definitely not boring, but understated enough that it wont look out of place anywhere pretty much. that is me, idgaf about dragons, limited numbers and all that bullshit which might make a difference to you. and it's not that i dont like chronographs either, i just find this one ....meh

maybe flip a coin for it and see if youll be disappointed with the result. it will tell you which one you actually prefer. maybe offer 2.8 for the dragon watch. if you really do like it a lot then it would be a shame to let it pass by when you can get KS anytime. i doubt i helped at all, but thats my 2 cents

I went and checked out the new Casio mechanical watch and I was left extremely disappointed sadly. On the other hand, pic related (the white one) positively surprised me.
If you don't care about the brand, according to a friend that I really trust (and I guess the internet) the best finishing one can get for that price is San Martin. I'd go for an original design though.
If you can get a used watch then go for a slightly used Alpinist. Or new, those Zenshin Citizen Super Titaniumβ„’ watches.
That's from the top of my head.
Personally, I'd save up and get a tudor gmt and never look into watches ever again.

Bought for $700 right off tissot's own site. I looked on grey market and didn't see any real deals from anyone in the US and figured this is a cheap enough watch to just go retail.
>Initial thoughts
Honestly, i really like it. The 35mm size is perfect on my twink wrist, the waffle dial looks really good in person (light satin shine to it, can catch some sunburst in bright light). The date window edging is better in person too. Fits the dial really well. I'd prefer no date just because... idk looks better, but this date window looks good. Literally my only critique of the dial is that the old tissot italic logo would go perfectly with the rest of the '70's' futuristic sort of vibe. Even a Cursive logo might fit well here. Even the wide stick hands look good to me now.

This is my first watch thats not a Vintage shitter, and first watch on a bracelet. First auto too (my others have been manual wind or quartz). I was considering a Rolex Explorer 1. Like really considering. I have the money but... eh. 5k-6k for just an object feels dumb even if I can afford it. I looked at some alternatives (the Smiths clone looks great) but ultimately I just went for a 35mm black dial prx, and I am glad i did. Once I get some links removed from the bracelet and it fits perfectly, I think i willl wear this 6-7 days a week.

We've seen your watch at least 1000 times but, I took the time to think about it in a more objective manner and my conclusion is that; people don't actually realise what they're seeing here.
It is an anomaly in the watch world. I won't say that it is the best value for money that you can get, because sadly this term has also been dragged through the ground and it has lost its meaning, and yet if you think about it, the fact that you can get this watch below 2000$ does not make sense.
First of all, you get the, possibly, most accurate autonomous watch on the planet, no GPS gimmicks, no radio controll no internet whatever, it's just you, in the woods, knowing the atomic time without big tech and or the government being able to track you. On top of that, you literally have a feature that is usually reserved for much, Much more expensive watches- the perpetual calendar.
Technicalities and specs aside, what do you get on the finishing part? It is as good as a grand seiko in terms of Hands and Marker finishing- Spotless, Sharp and no impurities or rough edges to be found. But what does GS-Level mean? Well it literally means that your Markers and Hands do have, on a macro level, better finished hands than 5 Digit Swiss Watches. It doesn't matter if this fact makes you angry or triggered or in doubt, but it is a Fact. The dial itself, the way they did the perception of depth, shouldn't work but it does and youc an even see the sunburst effect too.
Okay so what about exclusivity? Well what defines exclusivity?
>Low production
Check
>Locked behind the country of origin
Check
>Rare limited edition on top of said rarity to begin with
Check
So what about the case?Well it is not zaratsu but it still shouldn't be as good as it is. It is almost distortion free.
But is it all perfect? I don't think so, no. It is too thick, the movement is ugly and the bracelet is below the standards that the dial and tech have set. But again,it's 2000$

Compare it to the competition, at 2000$ what do you get from the swatch brands? ETA? Yeah... I mean cool. So what is the catch? The name, Citizen. It IS the fashion world after all and branding is, for better or for worse, the most important factor in the eyes of the everyday people.
Is it perfect for what it is? I think so, yes. There is room for improvement though, but said improvement would mean that it isn't the same watch, so I would not touch it. It being thick btw also means that it is more durable, so it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Especially considering that there needs to be room for the thermocompensation for the accuracy.

Longines flagship Dragon which is sold out everywhere or GS SBGH323 Red Dragon ~7k in a neighboring country. But getting the GS would distract me from my target and would be a big detour for years as it's not the one GS I have in mind. It's an even longer detour with double the Tag's price of 3.5k.
For reference my collection target is:
Seiko Presage SSA361 Starlight
Wise Adamascus AD15 Gold-filled
KSK SJE103 Garyubai
GS SLGA025 Atera
Credor Kuon GLCX999

All dress watches with bling dials.

>watch like this might be hard to sell.
I'm a very picky buyer and I don't plan to sell any of my hobby items be it watches or pens or figures or anything. That's why I'm torn now.
>is there anything to this watch apart from the name?
Apart from the 50% disc, the dragon kanji on the dial and dragon symbol on the caseback, I just like the Red-silver/champagne colors I guess. Tbh if the Tag dragon's colors are not to my liking (e.g. black-gold like Gshock's Dragon or purple like Hublot's), I would definitely not have this dilemma and pick the KS instantly. I'm afraid I might have gotten too far into the irrational FOMO territory because of the emotional attachment with dragon symbolisms.

>>18533936
>how long have you been looking at dragon watch?
Tbdesu I've entertained the idea of owning a dragon watch since last year but all of them were sold out and the inflated market don't really justify buying one second hand, until this Tag comes along.

>sounds to me like you want the KS but are just infatuated by another watch atm. maybe you got cold feet for the KS
I do want the KS and I'm actively looking for a good deal since my local price is roughly around 2.7k. A local seiko seller offered 2.3k which is around 12% off, but the Tag comes in with 50% off and here we are
