Most men don't take care of their appearance, period. The average person's slovenly attitude of not giving a shit really isn't a good reason the rest of us shouldn't be concerned. Same could be said for other general things like grooming, diet, fitness, clothing fit, etc.
I do agree with what you said about long hair being much harder to pull off if thinning. Receding hairline isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but it NEEDS to be thick. The weight of longer hair pulling down can really accentuate hair thinness in the worst way possible, and medium-short hair is probably best when hair is more diffuse

Agreed. I think long hair gets a bad rap because in some cases, it happens as a result of someone just not giving a shit about appearance to the point where they don't even have an intentional hairstyle they're going for, they just have hobo hair from the passage of time and not bothering. Think the stereotype of the autistic NEET with a disgusting greasy unkempt mop and a scraggly neckbeard. But that's a lot different than an intentional long hair style that's well maintained and healthy
We just sadly don't see many examples of that because social norms, men thinking it's girly to take care of your hair/appearance, genetics, balding, etc
