Have been for years. Once you realize lame branded streetwear like Stone Island, Acronym and even mall menswear like Polo is all based on military surplus pieces, but toned down and with a logo on it at a higher price, you can't go back. Surplus has decades of pieces and national styles to choose from and except for a few over priced pieces which were raised by the same streetwear cringelords who try collecting them, it's quite affordable.

Surplus is always best because it's made for the military with military budget, meaning it will be top quality and reliability.
Also the less "tactical" pieces still make for really cool streetwear, I just ordered a US army IPFU jacket which is pretty stylish, and I own two Bundeswehr jackets (people have mistaken this for Kanye West merch because he jacked the logo for his album or something)

Military grade is utter dogshit compared to actually high quality items.

It works like this: the military has a very simple minimum requirement list for, let‘s say, boots. As in: made from real leather, water-resistant etc…
They then put out a listing for manufacturers.
Every manufacturer who can meet production numbers can apply.
The manufacturer who can meet those minimum requirements for the cheapest price gets the contract.

You do get better boots than similar priced mall brand ones because the minimum requirements have to be fulfilled. But compare these with actual higher quality boots and you can see they’re pretty shit.

I like my m77 boots and surplus stuff. But it’s far from high quality.

The real avant-garde is to military-min-max. Actual GI gear is made by the lowest bidder to a loose spec, and it's a lottery whether any one procurement request will actually produce a good item, or a piece of trash. High-speed gear is, at best, made to a high standard for a very specific usecase that you, a civilian, will never encounter in your life. That is if it's not tacticool hypebeast trash for flat range ninjas.

There is, however, a sliver of the market where high-speed meets casual. It's either "covert operations" gear, made to high-speed standards of build quality and capability, but made to look unremarkable and casual; or it's some kind of brand merch like tube scarves or waistbags made by real tactical gear companies with same materials and processes and a large helping of whimsy. The real fashion statement is blending 90% of the first for an understated, functional outfit with 10% of the latter for subtle in-group signaling and\or scaring the hoes, should the need arise.

That being said, it doesn't have to be all full synthetic tech fabrics all over. In non-strenuous situations you can get away with denim, flannel and canvas for that workwear touch. Covert action clothing is mostly derivative from workwear anyway.

High-end athletic\tactical base layer is made of wool-synthetic blends or just wool. Full-synthetic fabrics are reserved for optional outer layers like shells, or LBE.
