I personally don't think the bright red brick on the back is all that bad. The bold contrast and instant brand recognition makes an otherwise tremendously boring and ugly shoe design stand out. The swoop design on the side is fine, but they're ultimately so bland and boring it's no wonder teenagers who haven't developed a personality yet flock to them.
Also, after wearing shoes with actual support, Vans are atrocious and are not even worth the price point which used to be the only really good thing about them. If you're buying a skate shoe, you might as well invest in something better designed aesthetically and construction-wise.

I find Converse to be more aesthetically appealing, but suffer the same support and construction issues. Invest in your feet, get better shoes.
