Yes and no. It’s literally just for more interesting, rich looking fades. Selvedge denim isn’t actually “objectively” better. The denim has more irregularities in the weave, and natural indigo is used to dye the yarns instead of synthetic dyes. This translates into a more vibrant, interesting looking fade with more texture as opposed to some of the more lifeless denim you find at any department store. Similar to how it’s nice to spend more money to go eat dinner at a nice restaurant, selvedge denim is purely for luxury enjoyment

Its an easy repair even if it is. Just get a needle and some yarn and reinforce the edge of the hole. A bit tedious sure but literally requires no sewing experience at all. Even if it doesn't end up looking good, the button covers the edge and most pants have a flap that covers the entire zipper. A literal child can fix this.
