Chlorine is terrible for your body, and it gets absorbed through your skin while you swim. It decimates your microbiome and is toxic for your own cells, too.

With that being said, swimming is incredible exercise and it's really fun. I love to swim in the ocean.

I swim for 20 minutes after lifting about 3 times a week. I had to increase my calories cause I was losing weight on a bulk when I didn't take it into account. It makes a huge difference, it's good for weight control. Allows you to eat a ton of carbs for lifting and then controlling the excess.
Besides, you sleep like a baby afterwards and I'm pretty sure it helps with recovery. I'm never sore after swimming.

This IS true, but only with long exposures at those levels.
There are plenty of nasty bacteria/parasites/chemicals that live in natural bodies of water just waiting to fuck your shit up too.
Chlorine, at least, kills off the first group in pools.
Life is just risky man.

how do you do this? after 200meter of freestyle im all out of air and have to rest for a minute. i simply dont get enough air in the breathing windows. the only style i can sustain over longer times is breast stroke, but it gives me cramps in the calves. really shitty cardio.

probably inhaling way too much air and don't have a good rhythm going. swimming is all about that smooth rhythm. or you're really bad at swimming and thrashing about using way too much oxygen and going nowhere. or you're just unfit as fuck. in which case you should probably do other cardio as well to improve that.

Obviously you have to start out with small distances, focusing on technique and breathing, at least that's what I'm doing rn

Semi topic related, I have hank hill ass and every time I try to swim my trunks slide off, is there a solution to this that doesn't involve suspenders?

>. or you're really bad at swimming and thrashing about using way too much oxygen and going nowhere.
i think its that. because when i go very slow, i last much longer, but then its not cardio because at that point im basically just floating with little movement forward. i see swimmers next to me swimming freestyle for 20 minutes straight like its nothing, they arent even gasping for air. meanwhile i leave the pool after basically having been asphyxiated for 20 minutes straight and feel like shit for the rest of the day.i probably need some coaching by a swimming instructor.

that would help for sure anon. or you could use them hand paddles and small fin swimming aids to help build muscle and form. gay as fuck and cheating, but it could help.

Swimming is one of the most based workouts. You can exert yourself extremely hard with very minimal risk of injury. Plus it feels like you are flying and that's fun.

a common one I see people doing is dragging thier legs behind them and kicking with the knees. you want to point your toes straight out the back, keep your legs straight as well and kick from the hip. keep your whole body firm and sorta rotate slightly side to side as you stroke in the water like you've got a pole going in your mouth and out your arsehole.

you can get those float things that go between your knees or shins which keep your legs straight up. that way you can focus completely on your form up front and then once you nail that you can introduce the legs.

At the beginning just don't swim a whole length because you shift focus from doing it right to making it all the way. It's a mindset thing. Once you are into a movement you just want to keep on going and that when you can do length. So, I wouldn't use this fixes to make it or only use it if the person has no bodily perception of his body at all

6x100 on 2 min
8x50 on 1:05, breathe every 5 strokes down, only 2 breathes back
3×200 on 3:30, pull

Those aren't necessary gay you just need to use them correctly. I used the paddles on pull sets and fins to do sprint sets on intervals i wouldn't normally make

NTA but swam competitively in Uni and swimming 25 breathing every 3 strokes, then 5 strokes and then breathing every 7 strokes is pretty normal breathing exercise. We would swim 25 m underwater with butterfly kick no fins too - some would do the whole 50 m no issue.
