well of course, they absorb water and thus a hundred grams of dry lentils turn into more than 200 grams so "per 100g" the amount of protein goes down. but naturally the calories for 100g reduce by the same factor.

100g of lentis (cooked) is < 1/2 a cup. Pretty small serving, if you're using it as your protein. If you're eating 100g of lentils weight BEFORE cooking, then you're eating about a cup, which if you're eating it as your main protein then that's fine.

I prefer black beans and brown rice. Tons of protein, fiber, and it's really filling. The rice complements the protein profile of the black beans. Serving sizes for the black beans and rice in pic related are dry, I re-weigh after cooking and the servings come out to an average of ~250g of black beans & ~120g of rice.

only problem with lentils is plant based protein is lower quality (harder for the body to extract the protein). it's great as a cheap staple ingredient to add volume to stews/soups, but should be supplemented with higher quality proteins (chicken, beef, egg) when possible.

"Cup" in and of itself is a measurement. There are kitchen utensils labelled as "teaspoon, 1/2 tsp etc, tablespoon, 1/2 tbsp etc, cup, 1/2 cup etc".

I'm not American and have a few of these. Also gram is a measurement of mass (amount of 'stuff'/matter that make up the object) and not volume (how much space the object takes up), you can't really eyeball that.

Not to be that guy but how 'bioavailable' is the protein within these black beans relative to say chicken meat or even (presumably cooked) eggs? Also I'm curious why you chose brown rice over just regular, don't really have an opinion myself one way or another.

They have really poor public health. Like insanely bad. You don't become truly immune to the detriments of drinking sewage and having a ton of parasites. You just don't die from it until you're 50 and immune system isn't able to tank those hits. It's still negatively impacting your health most of your life particularly growth potential. It's likely they're probably still at a genetic disadvantage but compared to having Victorian era public health you can't even tell.

Bioavailability of protein in properly cooked black beans is around 75-80%. The "anti-nutrients" people refer to are phytates. Despite slightly impacting the absorption of protein & some other nutrients, overall they are not a problem as long as you're eating enough nutrient-rich food (and multi-vitamin further helps w/ vitamin c). Phytates actually have a lot of positives for our bodies, they're linked to reduced cancer rates in multiple studies, so not worth avoiding completely. So, if you want to play it safe, just subtract ~25% of the protein from black beans and make sure you're still hitting your protein goals. Also, pressure cooking is the best way to prepare black beans (and the easiest) and reduces the most phytate content.

I choose brown rice since it has slightly higher protein & fiber content vs white rice, which complements the black beans. I also use a rice cooker which makes preparing it braindead easy.

kek. one of the drivers of the lower protein bioavailability in beans is due to the EAA profile imbalance, which is why you include rice- it fixes the imbalance & greatly increases the overall bioavailability

I find adding a teaspoon of baking soda improves their cook time dramatically, and improves the texture to a point that I was able to eat month old open "stale" beans. Acidic water makes them harder to cook. I find this problem more with broad beans than lentils though. Cook times are usually ~1 hour or so, maybe more if I set the heat to low instead of medium-low.
