Mentzer is not natty though he is an example of the era when people didn't overdevelop their legs and sought good proportions, favoring the V-taper. I.e. Taking Zane or someone like Serge Nubret as more of the perfect examples of the aesthetic principals of bodybuilding before the 70's. Even the mass monsters like Arnold and Lou had to keep this in mind.

Tom Platz's influence with his grossly overdeveloped quads was a mistake. That being said, Lee Haney in comparison was not that bad afterwords though his quads were still a bit overdeveloped. He still did not have the aesthetic qualities of the prior eras. Too much mass in all the wrong places.

Aesthetics peaked with Reeves and ended with Zane when he retired from professional bodybuilding in 1984.

Lift for actual function, focusing on posterior chain, lowbar box squats, good mornings, etc. You will have nice glutes and hamstrings where they tie into glutes, and proportionate rest of leg. Girls go crazy over this look.
