Yes, absolutely. The reality is few people have it in them to stick with a caloric deficit long enough to see real results. Like a skinnyfat like in the pic will be about 20% bodyfat (so at 153 pounds, that would be about 14 kg of fat), and even in a strict starvation diet it would take several days to burn a single kilo; and the fatter you are, the less noticeable individual kgs are. So he could not eat for a whole week and still not really see visible results, at which point he would go back to eating hot pockets and watching anime. Working out helps obviously, best even the best workouts for burning fat (several mile jogs) only burn a few hundred calories, so the key to best utilizing CICO is prolonged habit changes.

No matter how much you cut you're not gonna look good at that level of muscularity. There is no short-term or long-term benefit to cutting at your current stage.
Lift as hard as you can and don't worry about nutrition past your protein intake for now. You can decide whether you want to bulk or cut later when you're at the end of your noobie gains phase.

I did that, gave me RSI in no time until I started counting my protons, then fucked the rest of my life up by fucking up most of my tendons, ligaments, joints, entheses and so on. 11 years later and I'm still half-crippled
