/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For salivating seagulls working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I think you've nailed it pretty good. A couple of years ago I put a ton of effort into dating. Lost weight, got really good photos for the apps, got tons of matches, and could chat them up if they were interesting to talk to. From there converting into dates was very easy.

However, something happened once on these dates. Or maybe I should say didn't happened. No emotional connection. A few unsatisfying hookups. I mostly found the women boring and didn't want to see them again. I'm not saying they were boring people though. Most of them were objectively quality women with great lives. I was just bored by them and would much rather be alone than with them.

I'm not proud of it though. I wish I was a retarded normie. I'm not the kind of sperg that can put 2 million hours into Super Mario 64 and love every second it, nor am I normie enough to where kids or even a wife would improve things for me. Life is just kind of okay.

Ok stupid question time. Calculating my tdee is 2600 set at lightly active. So 1600 for cutting. Say i did 10 miles of cardio and an hour of working out, am i supposed to eat those calories back as it causes a deficit in the 1600? Or am i supposed to just eat 1600 no matter how hard i work out that day

It's not just relationships I'm not interested in either. It's anyone who isn't in my family. To me, non-family people are for doing things with. Exercise is a part of your TDEE, so if you regularly are doing that much exercise, you're not lightly active. That means your TDEE is higher than 2600, which means your target is higher than 1600.

I have. That can work, for a while, but it is patient, it is insidious, it may take years, maybe in a moment of weakness, or just by wearing you down over months and years, it /will/ get control again, it will never stop, and you won't notice it has you until it's too late, or even more horrifying, you WILL notice, and be powerless to stop it, a prisoner in your own body watching it all slip away.
The addictive nature of food is highly underrated. Cigarettes, cocaine, meth, heroin, the cravings go away in a few days, maybe a week at worst, but everybody understands how addictive these things are, how a relapse is almost inevitable at some point, and how likely a single relapse is to spiral into daily use, how hanging around drug users will inevitably lead to drug use. Food is worse though; Even if you could abstain the cravings would never stop, its cheap, access is unlimited, the culture is such that even people who are privy to diet and exercise encourage breaks and treats and cheats(relapse), for every 4 people you interact with, 3 are heavy food users.
85-95% of people who made it will succumb to obesity once more within 5 years, and it's not a failure to understand how to maintain the weight loss, it's because every single biological and cultural factor is a worst-case scenario for beating this addiction.
Now think about this, your hide is cotton, your teeth and claws are sticks and stones, your digestion begins over a fire, your immune system comes from a pill and syringe, and your brain is a little glass rectangle in your pocket, nothing is more human than using a tool to solve a biological shortcoming, so is manipulating hormones that are a major hindrance in our new environment, causing widespread disease and death, really going too far? At this point, choosing to diet is little more than a self-flagellation ritual to stroke your ego and gain clout among a small subculture of proud luddites.

Not that guy but this shit doesn't work, I got fat not by eating slop but by just eating way too much of the 'good stuff'. Chicken breasts are actually really caloric and easy to overeat if you're not tracking anything. Tub after tub of berries, pounds and pounds of veggies. Yeah volume eating is a meme. Your stomach doesn't get "full", an empty stomach is 50ml and it can expand up to 1500ml, unless you're eating until you're in pain, you're not "full", so ketolards were actually right about one thing, hunger and satiety is hormonally driven, and nutrition content matters.
Being in a caloric deficit just sucks though, plain and simple. There's no magical diet that is going to let you deprive your body of nutrients without it signaling you to eat more.

Nah, I was eating grilled skinless chicken breasts with nothing but salt and pepper and some seasonings. I was just eating 3~6 of them at a time with a huge bowl of vegetables on the side. I was drinking mostly water with an occasional glass of milk. I never drank alcohol or soft drinks, I was never a fan of fastfood or junk food. I'd just gorge myself on lean meat and veggies.

me, the collected and stable genius:
>That's great, however it also has a bunch of anti nutrients that prevent you from absorbing the iron in them (which is a common pattern amongst vegetables), and you're overstating the importance of magnesium in spinach because your body absorbs it better and retains more of it on keto, plus there are plenty of animal sources abundant in magnesium.

If you are in a caloric deficit then yes. There's extreme cases of caloric deficits where you may also be burning muscle rather than just fat, but generally speaking deficit means burning fat.
There's a reason we tend to put more emphasis on weekly weight fluctuations rather than daily, daily is very unreliable, stuff like time of day and water intake matters a lot.

The method he suggests in >>76322545 isn't much better than eyeballing your bodyfat, since you're just eyeballing your fitness level as a proxy for your bodyfat. If you lift regularly though, you could compare yourself to others of your height based on how much they lift.

i was joking. i doubt anyone could get fat on just broccoli. you can absolutely get fat eating too much chicken and vegetables though. the point is that people don't all feel satiated the same way. i feel strong hunger cravings every four hours (or less). i can eat a whole bunch of food until my stomach is bursting and still feel 'hungry.' it's the strangest thing. sometimes i feel hungry again immediately after i eat. i was a fat kid so i can cram all kinds of food in there without pain. i used to eat to pain frequently as a child. i used to drink at least 24 cans of pepsi a week.

if you spend enough time on /fit/ you'll meet those guys who are the opposite nd can eat just a tiny little bit and feel completely stuffed like they can't eat any more. they frequently complain that they can't gain weight no matter how much they eat. this seems impossible to someone like me. if i'm not actively trying to stop it- i'm always gaining weight. that's just how my body works.

You won't win a fight against the kind of surplus you're eating with any kind of exercise regime. Your primary focus for now should be on your diet. Identify what pushes you so far into a surplus, is it sodas, salty or sweet snacks, binge eating, junk food etc.
Then make incremental changes to that, don't try to crash diet and become an athlete at the same time, that's not going to happen. Easiest thing to cut out is sugary drinks btw.
Exercise is primarily to make you feel good in your body, help with your hormones and general well-being. A few extra calories burnt are a nice motivation and goodie on top. Some strength training should help with your back. Not sure how feasible bodyweight exercise is for you, but even a little bit of core and back work could go a long way. Walk as much as you can, but don't push through joint or back pain.
Meal prep is a good step btw. My favs are chili, stews, lentil salad. The /fit/staple is grilled chicken breast and green veggies steamed or oven roasted.

i'm not fat anymore. i'm in the healthy BMI range and i do a physical job and get 4-5 days of cardio in every week. the first time i actually succeeded in losing weight (not my first try) it was 115lbs lost. i went from 300+ to 185lbs. then after a few years, i gained a lot of it back. then i managed to get back down to 185lbs again. both times by counting calories and putting strict limits on how much i could eat. i don't eat fast food. i don't drink soda anymore. i still manage to put on weight even without those vices. i'm always hungry. i'm also very active compared to other people and always have been. i eat a lot of calories and i burn a lot of calories.

right now, i'm at 190lbs and headed for 175lbs, which was my lowest recorded weight in college when i was obsessively jogging to lose weight and constrained by dining hall hours. i didn't do CICO because i didn't know about it. i did manage to slim down from how i was as a fat kid, but only accidentally. since then, i trust the science of CICO because it works.

i eat mostly meat and vegetables, always have. lots of potatoes and pasta and not much (if any) fried food. don't really like sandwiches or chips. i have always made home cooked food my whole life. still get fat unless i am extremely careful.

i never ballooned back up to 300+ after i lost the weight for real the first time and i never will again. i know that i am capable of controlling my weight. it's just hard.

>Soda
Sugar free soda is fine. Long term you might want to cut them out, to rebalance what you consider sweet, since they're still messing up your sense of taste a bit, but that's optimizing the small stuff, not important. Just don't drink 1000 cals of sugar without any satiety. So you're good there.
>Meal prep
What are you eating at work when you're not meal prepping? If it's McDonald's or similar, that's something you want to change obviously. In a shared space the classic "fill six boxes and chill/freeze them" is harder. But can you prepare a single portion of something in the evening? Doesn't even need to be cooked food, can just make a wrap with chicken and greens. Chat Gpt can sort you out with recipes if you describe your situation. I like to just get a waterproof container, dump in some fat free Greek yogurt or even 2%, a handful of rolled oats and maybe a banana and some berries or nuts. Artificial sweetener if you must have it more appealing. Chill overnight, if it's not too hot it's fine until lunch. Insulated container or a fridge at work is better even. Doesn't even have to be every day in the beginning, just start with something to get used to it and get some experience.
>Walking
Don't have much advice there, other than it gets better when you lose the first weight. Good thing is, every step is a workout for you right now, so when you get lighter, your muscles are oversized for the job for quite some time :)

At work everyone just orders Uber, not always fast food though. My job provides both a kitchen full of free snacks/drinks and also a weekly lunch budget of $100. I use that money to pay for other stuff so I don't use it for food but that leads to me spending my own money on food or overindulging on the snacks. The snacks range from chips to protein chips, protein bars, poptarts, cups of cereal, oatmeal, honeybuns, cookies, slim jims, occasionally candy. The drinks are usually stuff like Gatorade/Powerade, soda (both regular and zero sugar) and energy drinks like celsius.

I'll have to keep it up with the walking then. I really wonder if going to a gym to use their treadmills would help. I can't tell if I'm trying to talk myself out of it or get someone else to talk me out of it lol.

All right, sounds like snacks are a likely suspect. It's hard to cut them out completely, but watch your calories and limit them to maybe one in the afternoon for a start. All the things you listed are on the calorie dense side. Protein bars and chips are just candy with marketing btw. Oatmeal is fine if there's no added sugar.
Any kind of takeout is usually high in calories, even the "healthy" options. But some stuff is obviously worse than other. Try to go for those if you order stuff, chain restaurants list their macros online. Prepping your own is better still, as I said, even just starting one or two days a week is something.
In general, you need to get to tracking your food intake and see where you can make some cuts the easiest. When you have an honest (!) assessment of your calorie intake, first goal is to eat maintenance and then to introduce a deficit. At your size, a 1000 cal deficit is relatively easy.
Can't really give you good advice on the walking thing. If you talk to a doctor anyway, ask there. But walking on a treadmill, where you can even hold up with your arms a bit should probably be fine. If it feels wrong, reduce intensity or duration. If it feels good, keep at it.

Hard disagree. It obviously varies by product, but the macros on quest chips are as solid as it gets.

I agree the snacks are probably fucking him, but snacks shouldn't be demonized. Quite the opposite. Integrate snacks into your routine in a healthy way. Have tons of healthy snacks like fruits, protein chips, vegetables, and yogurt around. Eat them often, in reasonable portions. They'll stop you from binging. I have a personal rule that if I'm at my calorie goal for the day, but am hungry at night, 100 calories of greek yogurt is always an option. Getting a smaller deficit for the day beats kicking the diet fatigue down the line and binging later.

Started the year at 470, now 500. Not looking for pity. Just wanted to tell people here that it can happen to you. If you are over 100 lbs or more overweight there is little stopping you from being 200, 300 lbs overweight. You also probably have something else going on, like severe sleep apnea and ADHD like in my case.

The fact is that you can, if circumstances allow it, get up to 500 lbs should be another reason some of you who are procrastinating losing weight should do something right this minute and not delay it. Again, there's nothing that stopped me from getting this fat. I have NAFLD, prediabetes and my sleep apnea is being managed. I don't feel like crap. My joints rarely hurt. you'd be suprised how much time you have once you honestly analyze how much time you waste in a day. once i really wanted to, i could easily fit an hours of training into my day, despite working full time and having a family.
other than that, it's good to incorporate training, just try to find some sort of enjoyment in it, otherwise it won't last. maybe set yourself a fun and achievable goal to track every now and then

Different anon, but you log your calorie counts as soon as possible.
I cook all my meals, so that means I log the ingredients as I prepare them while cooking. I have a digital scale next to me and when I decided how much to add (for example broccoli) I will weigh it and log it in mfp before cutting it up and adding it to the pan/wok. I do this for all ingredients I add - if it's a liquid like oil or onions sauce, tare the bottle to 0, pour it in, then weigh and the negative is how much you used. Always try to measure mass (weight/grams) rather than volume (liters/cups/spoons), as it's more accurate. You don't have to be giga accurate, so 78g I might log as 80 etc, but try to stay close, especially if you just started, you'll learn where to be strict and where to not be when you did it for a bit.
If you eat frozen/canned foods, scan the barcode before opening it and add the amount of the container, easy too. If you eat snacks or something, log it before eating as well.
The issue comes with restaurant meals/takeout - either look if someone else logged something like that __then choose the one with the most calories__ (some people add shit values that are far too low) or try to guesstimate the ingredients.
Also in the beginning it will be a little annoying to find the right entries, but as you use it it'll remember your previous choices and get easier to pick the ingredients.
The big takeaway is to log as soon as you know the amount you will eat or have eaten (portion/ingredient/whatever), always use a digital scale unless the amount is pre-measured (canned food) and to round up rather than down.
Good luck anon.

"just search the food in the app and log it"
Would work great except that every food has 200 nearly identical entries with wildly different amounts of calories. I am not saying that CICO is wrong, it obviously isn't. But if the reality is that estimating the amount of calories in most foods is impossible, then at least you need to readjust the advice to take that into account. It certainly works great as long as all you eat is chicken breast, rice and broccoli, but I am not sure that's sustainable in the long term for most people.

What? You just read the fucking lable, if none is provided you find similar food and assume the highend so that way you dont over consume. If you cant find the exact items calories, and while looking you find a range between 300 to 500 you just assume its 500 and move on. CICO is always and will always be what matters
Anonymous No.76325093 >>76325102

>you find a range between 300 to 500 you just assume its 500 and move on
I am starting to think that you are just too retarded to understand what I am talking about. So instead of a deficit of 500 calories you end the day with a deficit of a 1000. Do you think that has any effect on the success of the diet? At that point all you are doing is starving yourself, while pretending that you are accurately counting everything.
And the thing is, even if you have all the accurate information about the ingredients are using, you still don't know shit about the result after cooking. Should I count the 10 grams of fat that I added to the pan, even though most of it is still there at the end? Should I count the puddle of fat at the bottom after roasting chicken that I am not eating, even thought a large fraction of the calories are there? It's just nonsense. Let's be honest, this is why people who are serious about nutrition only eat foods that extremely easy to track, chicken breast, white rice and broccoli.

>counting calories has such a massive margin of error that it is a complete waste of time.
I kind of agree with this and have developed my own heuristics. When I was young, decades ago, I got stuck in China for over a month in some very blue collar areas for technology rollouts. One thing I realized quickly was that even though I wasn't hungry it was like being on a cut and I got pretty lean. All jobsite meals were exactly the same: meat the size of your hand with your fingers and thumb cut off (older ladies eyeballed everyone and gave the portion by your size), about 1.3x that in white rice, and then 2x that in veggies with some amount of cabbage in it, and a bowl of broth, probably 2 cups. Every single person was /fit/ and every person ate every single morsel of lunch every day. The meat was all over the place, from lean to some kind of horrible fried river fish to almost entirely fat (pork belly cubes) and for whatever reason if you stick to this ratio you will never really get off track.

So really for me, if there's an impossible to estimate scenario, I try to mentally eat a working man's Chinese lunch because if you're active you can't really go that bad if you keep the "bad" part to about the size of your hand minus your fingers and thumb and then eat vegetables and the rough equivalent to the rice's calories in carbs.
