He also said to add random rest days just because on top of this. He basically had you progress everything once a month. In his defense modern periodization has you progress once a month too but at least they have a way of doing so. Maybe Mentzer assumed you were also doing a lot of work outside of the gym. Maybe it's just that people were way the hell more active back then.
