>Who is /fat/ for?
For dependable ducks working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

95% of the time you're just eating too many calories (even when you think you aren't, see pic). 5% of the time its a water thing and you need to give it a few weeks.

Try eating less and be mindful of calories you might be forgetting to log, because your body isn't.

My plan is
>2 meals a day during 8hr feeding window
>~500 cals each
>High protein

What's good to meal prep for this? Preferably something I can make a huge batch of and stick in the freezer because every past diet that has failed has been because of goddamned fucking piece of shit cooking. No veges and no spices, I'm not indian.

I've been doing beef and bacon lately.
I get about 1kg of extra lean beef mince, salt and pepper it decently and mix it up with the salt and pepper so it's spread throughout. Then I make a burger patty and put a couple of pieces of bacon in the air fryer for 10 minutes. Flip the patty and then another 9 minutes. Eat it with only a fork.
I call it beef and bacon.

Just select something from the left and pair it with something on the right. Find the combos you like and prep meals comprised of them. Or just eat chicken and broccoli everyday since those are the minmax options. This way just gives you some variety.

Vegefag propaganda. Why can't you people just admit your bizarre plant leaves are disgusting? If you have to do 15 fucking things to it to make it edible you're just polishing a turd. You know what you have to do to meat to make it edible? Nothing. Just cook it. Meat is already delicious and it's the healthiest thing you can eat.

He likely has the fucked up TAS2R38 gene, people with it taste broccoli as extremely bitter. There's a similar gene that makes cilantro taste like soap to some people making them hate almost all Mexican food.

You can try zucchini, carrots, or cauliflower those are far less likely to taste bitter to you.

I literally gained like 8~9lbs when I started taking creatine and changing absolutely nothing else about my diet. It set me back a month if I was only tracking via the scale, but my waistline was going down at the same time so I knew I wasn't gaining fat.

Try tracking other metrics like waistline for times like this when you can't trust the scale.

Well, hopefully it's nothing like that much although the anon is right, the weight is secondary.

I'm just trying to get back on track and was starting my day with a protein shake + creatine, and I do feel like I feel better on creatine, especially when running a fairly large deficit. I've been around 800 calorie deficit for most of these days.

Pic related, it's the month of June and I started taking it about two weeks in and didn't make much other change.

Boiling/Steaming vegetables can lead to significant nutrient loss, particularly of water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C and some B vitamins, which can leach into the cooking water.

Frying is pretty bad too as it adds a lot of unnecessary fat. Sautรฉed, baked, or air fried are better as they cook with minimal added fat without much nutritional loss. For pure nutrients best is usually just eating them raw.

Iโ€™m the guy that might have gyno from a month ago (245lb to 167, 5โ€™11 22M) and Iโ€™m at 163 right now, much closer to my goal of 156 by late August when school starts.

But I donโ€™t want to lose too much muscle in the process. If I eat 130g of protein per day plus some lifting, will I be safe?

Airfrying burns the broccoli and creates cancerous compounds, not a fan

I appreciate your answer but I will continue to steam or boil it for a few minutes to soften it up without it overcooking as I simply eat broccoli for the taste, fibre and trace minerals

Goal LBM ร— 0.72g of protein a day. So if your goal is 156lbs you only need ~112g of protien a day. But a little more or less isnt going to hurt.

.72 is already the safe upper limit, you wont get any benefits from consuming more. 1g/lb of lbm/d is just to make it simplistic. Study after study had failed to show any hypertrophic benefit to consuming more than .72g/lb of lbm/d of protein even among elite athletes and lifters.

Depends on the vegetable and the duration of the cooking obviously, but the nutritional loss can range from insignificant to pretty significant. If your just blanching them the nutritional loss is rather minor for example.

Consider baking at a low temperature 275F (135C) if you want an alternative that will soften them without losing the water soluble vitamins and without browning.

This is only a concern with starchy foods like potatoes, since it can produce acrylamide when burned. Not a significant issue anyway, and certainly not for vegetables like broccoli.

I tried putting it in a fruit smoothie and in yogurt, hoping those would help mask the flavor, but it still completely overpowers everything with this arresting and revoltingly artificial coconut flavor, its just too much for me to countenance. I already don't like coconut, but this fake stuff they used to flavor this is somehow even worse. I'm probably going to end up dumping the tub, but it feels like such a waste to throw it out even if I got a refund for it already. Maybe if I put a single scoop into a large stew or something, dilute it enough inside something with a strong flavor that can overpower and mask it, I dunno, might just make whatever I put it in taste disgusting no matter how diluted it is. Or I could just put it in water, hold my nose, and choke it down. It really is detestable though.

Try this for a simple stir fry:
- 1 onion, 1 clove of garlic
- 1 tsp chili paste or 1 chili chopped or chili flakes
- protein of choice, cut into bitesized pieces
- 1 bell pepper (optional)
- half a broccoli or more
To prep, skin the onion and garlic, press garlic, cut onion into 6-9 large chunks. Cut the protein. Cut bell pepper either into large pieces or strips. Cut the broccoli rosettes off, and half the larger ones. If you want, peel the stem and cube it too.
In a wok or large pan, add some oil and cook your protein until almost done. Add the onion chunks, give it a quick mix. Add the broccoli, give it another big mix. If the pan is too hot, splash some water into it. Cook until the broccoli is somewhat soft. Add the bell pepper and mix, give it 2 minutes or so, just to soften. Meanwhile in a small bowl or cup, add 1 tsp starch (any starch works, cornstarch is decent), 1 tsp broth powder (veggie or broth powder), the chili paste, optionally half a tsp of sugar (skip for dieting, but it adds to the flavor otherwise). Add some cool water to dissolve and mix so the starch is all mixed up. Put the garlic in and quickly mix so it doesn't burn. Pour the sauce over your ingredients and QUICKLY mix it all around, the sauce should become thickened and cling to the ingredients, within a minute you're done. Pour onto a plate, top with spring onion for visual interest if wanted, or a few drops of roasted sesame oil if you have it for flavor - if not, enjoy as is.
The broccoli will mostly be a vehicle for the flavor of the sauce now, and your dislike of the aroma will not matter I promise.

I'm aware anon, I lost it all once before years ago. I was in a very bad mental state back then, so I just regained it over time and this time around I'm doing it much healthier (both physically and mentally), but I do remember how amazing it felt to be healthy and not have to worry about shit like that. In the meantime I found that buying very long boxer shorts that cover the thighs (which exist for athletes I think) help with reducing the friction and sweating enough that in the meantime I can hike and walk to help with the weightloss. Just not easy to find those long ones because they are usually for athletes and athletes are rarely obese, but I found some that fit me thankfully.

The big thing that changed is last time I did it I was deeply depressed and frequently both derealized and depersonalized. Dieting back then was both a desperate attempt to regain some control over my life, and a way to channel my self-hatred into punishment.
I've been to therapy since and feel like a different person, I enjoy life again and I can't remember being happier. It was probably foolish to attempt to build a skyscraper on a unsteady foundation as I did my first attempt, but I at least know now I can do it again - and this time the foundation is much sturdier.
Wishing you the best too, we're all gonna make it. I'm already happier than I've ever been while fat, I can't imagine the euphoric heights I'll reach when that's gone too.

>How unhealthy is water fasting actually?
Fine for short durations (72h every other week or so). Just make sure you get enough electrolytes. You'll lose LBM alongside the fat which is why its typically not recommended or desirable, as LBM is 10x as hard to gain as fat is to lose. Try PSMF instead, you'll lose fat at a similar rate, but your LBM losses will be minimal, pic related.

Little bit of a blog post but I saw a photo of myself from a wedding 4 weeks ago and I noticed a big belly I didn't realize I had. Decided to diet for the first time I've been lifting (forever) and managed to cut 14lbs in 3-4 weeks. Its epic because I never did it.

All I did was:

-Play basketball (which I enjoy) 4 times a week instead of 1-2
-Walk for a little bit more during my walks I do anyways (which I enjoy)
-Push back food cravings. I'm rich so I used to just eat whatever but I've gained the willpower to skip meals. No real conscious fasting but I did he 20 hours a couple time and did an entire day once (Probably 32 hours total). Keep in mind it is fake fasting because I usually drink energy drinks or coffee with milk

It was 212lbs-198lbs so far at 6'0. Even lost 3 lbs from last Thursday to today without torturing myself

>the week's worth of chicken breast I cooked is dry as fuck and apparently you're supposed to salt beans while you cook them for flavor (which i didn't do) so they're a bit bland too
both problems can be solved with salt. Next time you cook beans cook them with a little salt. You can also add salt to your beans after the fact too. For chicken breast it can really help if you brine the breasts in a solution of water, salt, and a little sugar before you cook them. Look up online to find ratios and time. You can get away with as little as a couple hours of brining the breasts depending on the salinity of the brining solution. Though overnight brining works well too.

Chicken takes a bit of getting used to to cook properly if you're unfamiliar with your stove/oven to avoid drying it out but you can do stuff like marinade it to help with the flavour and give it more liquid to make over-cooking it take longer. Beans you need to season the boiling water for to flavour, yeah, even if you're doing a sauce or stew or something with them after.

Not that anon, but don't fast yourself into a skinnyfat situation. That takes longer and is harder to get out of than just fat. On a reasonable calorie deficit a motivated person can lose a pound of fat in about 3 days. A motivated person can build a pound of muscle in about 30 days.

But thank god I managed to stop myself earlier than usual. A box of Mike and Ike's, two Reese's cups, a greek yogurt sorbet bar, and a protein bar.

Cannot believe that's approximately 900 calories of junk. I had another hour of gluttony in me easily.

But other than that, only had vegetable soup and a little half n half in the coffee, the day is salvageable.

Zone 2 is labeled "fitness zone" on this chart.

Basically you take your maximum heart rate (210-your age) then multiplying that number by .6 for the zone 2 floor, and .75 for the zone2 ceiling. So if you're 25 for example: Maximum heart rate: (210-25)=185BPM, Zone2 floor at 111BPM and ceiling at 138BPM.

You can figure out your heart rate by pressing your fingers to your pulse and counting how many beats you can count in a minute (or count them for 15 seconds and multiply by 4) or by buying a heart-rate monitor (they're fucking cheap), most fitness equipment will have heart rate tracking built in, smart watches will usually have it as well.

Getting to 10% bf is a pain in the ass once you're below 15%, I'll just copy what pro bodybuilders do for their 5-6 week show prep.

I'm already lifting 6x a week and doing 30min of incline treadmill 4x a week, only issue is that my calves start hurting after 25-30min, might just do 30min incline and 30min stair master to see what happens.

I went from 160kg down to 90kg by cutting back to 2000 kcals, but now I've been plateauing for months and I realized after recalculating my TDEE I've hit the point where if I want to progress further I'll have to either eat even less or start trying to make up a deficit through exercise. Yet now I'm so used to eating 2000 kcals a day and my current exercise has become routine I don't think I'm ready to cut back even further or do even more. Cutting back from unlimited calories and not giving a fuck to counting everything and limiting myself to 2000kcals has already been a struggle for me, I've had good days and bad, but over the past year I've had more good than bad and gotten where I am now thanks to that. But man cutting back even further to 1500 kcals seems really hard and so much more restricting.

How do you ex-fatties do it? I thought I could just coast on 2000 kcals all the way down to being skinny, but I'm still fat and not getting any thinner anymore. This second transition to an even lower target seems almost as harder than the first because I've been at 2000 kcals for so long, my regular recipes and dinner plans will all have to be dialed back. I've gotten into a routine and I'm comfortable again dammit.

Around a pound a week is a slow, but good, sustainable pace. Two pounds is about the safe upper limit. It's a bit different if you're a 500pound behemoth, but for most people, super rapid loss causes more issues long term than a slow long burn

>The alkaline diet focuses on consuming foods that are believed to promote an alkaline environment in the body, primarily emphasizing fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes while avoiding meat, dairy, and processed foods. However, the scientific basis for the diet's claims about altering body pH and preventing disease is largely unproven.
Why does everyone shill some new pet fad diet with wild claims but no real supporting evidence these days? Seems every week I hear about some new fad diet that's supposed to fix everything only for it to be yet another one of these.

He famously got meme'd into some fruit only fad diet, believed it was the magical solution to all health problems and the secret to eternal youth and longevity, then died of cancer 20 years later even after stealing a kid's kidney.

Yeah, there is evidence that minimally processed foods are better for you than ultra processed slop, but everyone already knew that grilled chicken and a side of broccoli was probably healthier for you than fried chicken with a side of oreos. Everything else I've seen is mostly is pseudoscience bullshit or inconclusive studies on how seemingly everything you eat MAY, in some groups, be linked with a MODERATE increase in cancer risk under specific circumstances, or how ______ might slightly reduce cancer risk, but nothing actually conclusive.

Agreed, there's no point in getting too autistic about it (which is also why I think people need to really avoid extreme diets like veganism or carnivore), because you're not going to find any conclusive evidence pointing to any one diet as the one diet to rule them all.
Common sense like avoiding most of the poison (added sugars, syrup, seed oils, fried foods, etc) from processed foods will get you as far as we can reasonably go. Anything more than that will require a complete revolution of science into microbes and gut biome, which in turn would probably require a revolution of the entire food industry (since it is entirely contingent on selling you addictive and harmful things).

Already 2 lbs below my fattycontest check in from Saturday. Its gonna be a good week.

If I keep up the pace I've been maintaining since March, I'll be right around 200lbs when I leave for a big trip in October. Something to help keep me focused.

At this point the food and exercise feel like such a routine that I dont even feel like I am restricting myself..my only issue is poor sleep quality. I am waking up after 6hrs of sleep still tired but unable to go back to bed.

You don't even have to listen to any bro science, it should be pretty intuitive. Its baked into most of the calorically dense, overall shitty things you can find in the grocery store. You already know that olive oil is better, and you also know that things like butter or tallow are fine in moderation. At that point why consume anything made with these shitty industrial waste tier oils, regardless if you've seen enough good studies about it? You can't really go wrong cutting it out.

How do my fellow fatties deal with the all or nothing mentality? I have a really bad case of it. Even when I'm on a high calorie limit like 2000, which I'm doing now, I keep thinking "well I can't eat anything because it's all so calorie dense!" and I wind up getting really down on myself. There doesn't seem to be much point in eating anything unless I can eat a lot of it so I think I can't eat anything, which is stupid of me.

time to look really hard at your food choice. got to reduce the amount of oil you're using when you cook, choose leaner meats, cut out all the slop and sugar and then replace with more veggies and low-calorie alternatives. that way you will still feel full even at a lower calorie limit.

i stopped eating ground beef and switched to lean ground turkey. i ditched all sugary snacks. i actually went through my calorie log and identified all of the instances where i ate foods that i could possibly remove from my diet to increase its efficiency just a little bit.

even removing just 200-300 calories can put you back into a deficit. that's two pieces of bread. you can surely cut or swap something out somewhere.

Add a salad to your day. Fill it with fruits and chicken and some light dressing. Have a snack thats always allowed when youre hungry. A pound of watermelon is 140 calories. 113g of greek yogurt is like 60 calories, add some sugar free jello pudding mix and cinnamon to make it taste even better. Its better to go 100 calories over your goal with a healthy snack than going to bed hungry and stressed everyday. Integrate 200-300 calories of your favorite junk food everyday to fight cravings, like a small bag of skittles. Get filling meals in everyday. I eat atleast a pound or two of turkey chili everyday.

I genuinely am not sure what is causing my stress, I already do have salads from now and then.

I eat like shit during these days off at work last time and having PTO this week. Which is why I think it may be something psychological.

Sure I am slightly hungry, still but I have been managing my deficit compared to how I was last week during work.

Sounds to me like something is wrong at work or you're just plain stressed from the responsibilities of adult life. Thats totally fine and happens to everyone. Its normal to turn to food to cope, but its not good for you. Its okay to have it as an option at your total worst though. If youre about to breakdown a slice of cake is the least of your worries, but if its how you cope with the background radiation of life stress itll be a problem. All I can say is instead of having healthy eating be another responsibility, let it be something that grounds you and provides relief. A balanced diet of filling healthy foods and a bit of junk isn't just a way of getting healthier, but feeling content and an opportunity to try new foods and types of eating. Try to find a liveable deficit you can do 80% of the time for 10 week chunks, where you take 2 weeks off in between. Make sure to fit a treat into that deficit everyday so that you dont feel deprived. Eat filling well seasoned, sauced, and spiced meals that leave you satisfied from a taste perspective. Find fast and frozen foods that fit your diet in a pinch. Chickfila sandwiches and salads with light dressings work great. So do california pizza kitchen frozen pizzas.

Fatty Contest
IhaveAids
290.5lbs
5'7"

I fucked up slightly, didn't feel like cooking so I ate a sandwich with ham and light mayo with a pear for breakfast, ate the same for dinner, then a few hours later I got really hungry and ate 2 hot dogs and chips

I think I'm starving myself to much to the point where I get really hungry and can't stop thinking of eating food, guess I should start counting calories better and making sure I actually eat 1500 a day

HOnestly feel like I would binge eat if I buy multiple, but I could try buying small portions at a gas station.

Thats what I do. Either I have a fatty protein rich meal that day like a fried chicken sandwich or if all my meals were clean I have a snack size bag of skittles. I also usualy have a mid-lift and late night chupa chup lollipop

I'm currently fasting until Friday night or Saturday morning, but after that I'm curious about those "sugar diets" where you basically consume nothing but sugar to sate appetite and thus consume low calories per day.
My only concern about this is if it'll cause risk for developing diabetes (I've never been at risk of this before, just curious).
I'm only about 30 pounds overweight so I don't imagine it would be for very long.

Need more context. Just eating 2 hot dogs on-top of low caloric intake for the day isn't world-ending. Going to bed hungry is not a big deal and I would do it all the time when I was poor in college. If you're eating dinner but then eating a meal after it might have something to do with you staying up later than you should be, for starters.

You're doing about the same calorie cut as me - 1500 cals.

It's okay to walk that much but you were complaining about being exhausted. I usually walk about 20000 steps a day, I was just trying to help with the exhaustion not knowing your calorie cut. Obviously you wouldn't cut too much from 1650 cals a day.

What's stopping me from eating 500 calories in small snacks at work then having a 1000 calorie box of Velveeta shells and cheese for dinner when I get home and a bit of psyllium husk and water after? What's stopping me from doing that every day?
