A thread for general dental health

- oral hygiene practices
- supplements for dental health
- alternative practices
- share your routine

>inb4 how is this fitness related
Itโ€™s health related and more relevant than 50% of the crap on this board.

Current routine:
>floss with non-plastic based floss
>interdental brushes
>oil pull with coconut oil for 10 mins
>electric brush with fluoride toothpaste

Considering ditching fluoride toothpaste for hydroxyapatite.

Current supplements relating to dental health: vit D 1000 IU daily and magnesium 250mg daily. Considering adding K2 as my multivitamin only has a small amount of K1.

Water pick with the following mixture:
>raw apple cider vinegar
>fresh lemon juice
>coconut cream
I strain that through a thoroughly rinsed, clean and damp white cotton t-shirt and then stir the mix into naturally sparkling mineral water (I use Gerolsteiner). I do that once every 3-5 days. No brushing, no flossing.

A. It's not about how you clean. It's about what ecosystem you create inside your mouth. This basically means minimize sugar. Cleaning a dirty earth is impossible. Maintaining a healthy well balanced earth is doable
1. I think floss is actually overrated. Once a day is good twice a day creates micro years and indents for bacteria to go in
2. Electric toothbrush is overpowered
3. Nonflouride toothpaste seems overrated
4. Water pick is only necessary if your mouth is really fucked up
5. Eating pussy doesn't seem to impact oral health. Sucking dick does.
6. Other than ecosystem, oral health is all about how your mouth/bones are naturally shaped. I have a big jutted out jaw and it leads to shit not draining probably and I get fucked up mouth shit.

Whatโ€™s the consensus on miswak around here? I was fluroridepilled a decade ago and Iโ€™ve recently got into the habit of using these bad boys. My teeth feel clean after and I just kinda brush my gums & tongue with my fingers to get any bad breath gunk out of there. No complaints from the wife so far.

How bad is my gum recession?
I could swear it gets worse and worse every year, if not even every month.
I visited 6 differebt dentists, none could help me in any way and I feel they downplay the severity.
One thing I noticed was, does flossing loosen your teeth? I have tight gaps, so the floss barely even fits sometimes and I could swear my teeth "feel" loose everytime after usage.

>floss with non-plastic based floss
I looked in the amazon store for floss that was not plastic and I could not find anything.

>interdental brushes
>oil pull with coconut oil for 10 mins
What are these things?

>electric brush with fluoride toothpaste
I switched to a fluoride-free toothpaste two years ago and I did not notice anything different. My mouth does not feel healthier or less healthy. Also from my experience the fluoride in toothpaste is not necessary.

it's a meme, your teeth cannot uptake enough nutrients from any source in a 24 hour period to repair itself from the inside out.
the dosage needed would kill you.
for reference k2 can be mega dosaged, but the amount necessary to repair this kind of damage (if possible to do so in any meaningful timespan) would be toxic to the human body.
vitamin D uptake and required calcium also would both be toxic also, but would be toxic at levels much lower than the k2.

you can get away with a few mega dosaged 50k IU of vitamin D, but dude calcium at such levels would fucking cause cardiac arrest.
your body must maintain calcium homeostasis daily or you fucking die.

that happened to be when i didnt go to the dentist for like 8 years for pretty much all of my 20s after being a 2 times a year cleaning person for my entire life. the only reason i went anyway is because two pin sized superficial cavities i got when i was a kid (so superficial they didnt even need to be numbed) becam visible again.

ended up having to get a deep clean that took 2, maybe it was even 3 sessions, along with getting the superficial cavities refilled. cost like $700 and i think i couldnt eat for a day or two because of the stresss on my mouth

It's so strange to me how it's dental threads in particular on /fit/ that bring out these kikey "dental health is a scam, they charge me money for services, and that's bullshit" posts. I never hear that regarding other medical procedures, or the rest of the overpriced abomination that is the American healthcare system. Why is that, is it because a lot of dental health is preventative to hopefully prevent issues from happening, rather than reactionary treatments that treat things that you're currently suffering from, so people on /fit/ are too retarded to understand that, and just say
>my mouth no hurt, why me need to go to dentist to clean, dentist is scam

Fluoride is not a scam. It works but most people don't use it properly. You need to floss first, then rinse with mouthwash (if you want to), then finally brush with a fluoride toothpaste (read the labels and get the good stuff). Then don't rinse your mouth after brushing and don't drink anything for 30 minutes after. That's it.
Go to your dentist and see if they will sell you the good shit fluoride that has a massive amount in it. Tastes kinda bland but that shit works.
As for the yellow teeth, yeah whitening products sold over the counter are a meme. Your dentist will hook you up with professional whitening if you ask for it. Not sure the cost.

Start with just taking a couple tums before bed and see if that works since it doesn't mess with your stomach acid production at all.

The next step would be Pepcid but that does make your stomach produce less acid which can mess with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Prilosec is the next step up and it's basically stronger, time-release pepcid which fucks up nutrient absorption even more.

You could also fix it by losing weight or changing diet, but I still get it as a non-fat that eats normally. I've been taking pepcid but I'm going to go get a scope down my throat and see if surgery is an option.

BioMin-F-Efficient-fluoride-High-Performance-everyday-toothpaste-Australias-No.1-rated-toothpaste-1-2595416753
Would recommend Biomin toothpaste. Would recommend any Anon to go to the dentist for a clean if they *think* they need it.

Also would recommend that gently brushing along my gumline with just lukewarm water before brushing my teeth with toothpaste helped with the inflammation of my gums. Also emphasis on GENTLY brushing, people brush too hard. You don't need an electric toothbrush, just take it slow.

Other than that, you could get a second toothbrush so you have a morning and night toothbrush. Cavities develop as a result of *bacteria* scavenging saccharides (sugars) left in the mouth, which get converted into ATP for the bacteria's energy production, which makes lactic acid as a byproduct and that is what rots teeth. These bacteria are mostly anaerobic, so they thrive in low-oxygen environments like gumlines. If you have a second toothbrush, you give the first the chance to dry out after use and kill off bacteria.

i aggravated gingivitis into periodontitis by overbrushing after a period of dental neglect and while it isn't bad (my dentist didn't even notice it until i mentioned it to them) it's a daily reminder to floss and take care of my teeth because i can feel the ridge where the gumline has receeded at one tooth
don't brush too hard because you aren't going to brush away calculus anyway, even if you use baking soda; it's more important to change your bristles and floss

How do you find a dentist that's actually good and not just trying to jew you out of money? Google reviews? How do you know if they are even going to take you? Last time I tried to make an appointment somewhere they were just like "we're not accepting new patients", I don't know why they don't want money. It's also been years since I've been to a dentist which is kind of embarrassing.

>Would recommend any Anon to go to the dentist for a clean if they *think* they need it.
You NEED to get a cleaning every 6 months. It takes 24 hours for plaque to turn in to tartar, it's pretty much impossible to not develop some tartar build up over a few months, and then it needs to be scaled off with a metal tool(don't try it yourself)
>>76357762
>>76357783
They don't pull teeth to fix crowding anymore; they typically do interproximal reduction (sanding off a few fractions of a millimeter between each tooth to make space). Consult with an orthodontist (or multiple), do your research and learn exactly what you want, especially clear aligners vs metal brackets, they will push the clear aligners hard, I let myself get talked into it when I wasn't really sure and it cost me $1200 to switch.

I dunno man, I've heard terrible things about dentists I love, and nothing but great things about dentists I didn't like much. Pretty much all of them do good work, it's more about vibes, I guess. If you have insurance just go with whoever is in your network, if they say they aren't accepting patients try the next one.
>It's also been years since I've been to a dentist which is kind of embarrassing.
Doesn't really matter how long it's been or how much damage you've done in the past, they can tell how well you're taking care of your mouth in the present. Plus, the fact that you are concerned about what they think tells me you're far from the worst thing they've seen (and smelled), like 50% of the people they see don't even floss, just don't walk in with bleeding gums and a nasty tongue, and don't be a little bitch when something is uncomfortable.

Here; Stephan Guyenet has articles discussing their work:
http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2009/03/reversing-tooth-decay.html
https://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2009/03/preventing-tooth-decay.html

A highlight from the first article (pic related):

>In group 1, oatmeal prevented healing and encouraged new cavities, presumably due to its ability to prevent mineral absorption. In group 2, simply adding vitamin D to the diet caused most cavities to heal and fewer to form. The most striking effect was in group 3, the group eating a grain-free diet plus vitamin D, in which nearly all cavities healed and very few new cavities developed. Grains are the main source of phytic acid in the modern diet, although we can't rule out the possibility that grains were promoting tooth decay through another mechanism as well.

>Dr. Mellanby was quick to point out that diet 3 contained some carbohydrate (~45% reduction) and was not low in sugar: "Although [diet 3] contained no bread, porridge or other cereals, it included a moderate amount of carbohydrates, for plenty of milk, jam, sugar, potatoes and vegetables were eaten by this group of children." This study was published in the British Medical Journal (1) and the British Dental journal.

it does the job very well and it's easily more value for your money than any toothpaste or virtually anything i can think of.

however I never close my mouth using my "natural bite" and doing so where I have to pull my upper teeth back feels unnatural 99% of the time and hurts me if I maintain it long enough

not to mention I also look like my jaw is recessed when you take into account the jawline, so why the fuck would I allow this?

I'm just going to tell him I want invisalign and to only fix the teeth horizontally and not bother with anything else, maybe slightly pull both top and bottom rows back half a centimeter or something at most, might elongate my chin though

They're not mutually exclusive

I don't do oil pulling, it seems like woowoo to me. Probably the most important thing you can do is minimise sugar, you could have perfect teeth without brushing if you had no sugar in your diet (but your mouth would probably smell from rotting food still). I replaced most of the sugar with xylitol a while ago

You can get a water flosser for additional benefit, especially if you have deep gum pockets, but the water can't break biofilms so you still have to brush and floss.

Do you consider hydrogen peroxide natural? You can buy it, usually in 3, 6 or 12% concentration. None of those will really harm you even if swallowed but they do make your skin itch for a while so it's best to wear gloves if handling above 1% concentration. For dental use you want 0.5% anyway (buy 12% and dilute it just before use to save money). No more than once a week or it can create sores in your mouth. Once per fortnight is probably better.

Try excluding different things from your diet to see if you have a food sensitivity. Turned out dairy and eggs were fucking my shit up. Too late for my teeth though.

Heart disease causes gum recession. Gums and enamel do heal but very slowly. Its easier for dentists to just patch and pray that they recover.

During a tooth extraction I almost passed out from stress.

I turned white, started sweating profusely, my ears were ringing. I seriously thought I might be having a heart attack.

I have a two year old son who is doing great. I never needed braces growing up and I have a strong jawline. Never had a cavity either. What can I do to ensure my son doesnโ€™t get stuck in the dental scam industry? What foods should he be eating? Any other tips so he doesnโ€™t end up a weak jawed cuck later in life?

Protip. Erythritol is consumed by oral bacteria that cause cavities. It kills them while leaving alone commensals. You don't want to ingest it because it's bad for the cardiovascular system. So use it as mouthwash first thing in the morning.

Use xylitol too. It doesn't get absorbed by intestines so you will get diarrhea if you take too much, but it's safe, and also kills bacteria.

Avoid using harsh mouthwash that kills everything in the oral cavity. Oral bacteria that do not cause cavities are needed to create nitric oxide in the body.

didn't know erythritol also killed the bastards
was looking at it more as a very low calorie sweetener and I'm using xylitol as mouth wash already
but what do you mean here:
>You don't want to ingest it because it's bad for the cardiovascular system
