Treadmill HATE Thread
Is this the single most USELESS exercise equipment you could ever use/own?
I remember being happy by easily doing sub-30min 5Ks multiple times on the treadmill, believing my performance was something to be proud of, until I went for my first run outside.
I could only barely reach 3K before getting completely gassed out into a hard stop. It is like I started learning to run from scratch again, the floor was much harder, the sun blasting your face was nothing like the controlled environment of the gym.
And then I came into the realization: What even the FUCK is the point of the treadmill?
All other cardio machines have their uses and purposes, and let's be honest, most of them are actually better than running. (I don't know about bikes though, I avoid them because they destroy your balls)
But the difference between treadmill running and outdoor running is so massively different that now I have to question what even is the POINT of the treadmill. Just go run outside. Can't go run outside? Literally use any other machine for superior gains.

I fell for the meme. Bought it thinking it'd be nice to be able to run in winters or in fall when it's raining heavily. But I fucking hate using this shit, I'd genuinely rather run while it's raining, which I did yesterday, or run on snow than on a treadmill. I'd sell it in a heartbeat, if I knew anyone willing to buy a used one.

The treadmill is to running what the Smith machine is to lifting.
It's a simulation that requires a fraction of the effort and thus doesn't really prepare you for the real thing that much.

>now I have to question what even is the POINT of the treadmill.
Can be useful for someone who's very obese and can barely walk. Make him walk upwards to one hour every day until he's human-shaped again.
It's a useful tool for cripples to recover. Just like the Smith Machine!

About your last point... I know it's summer now but think about in winter when it's raining or snowing and dark, you would be much better off running on a treadmill than outside. Also, the surface of the treadmill being softer/bouncier than concrete or most paths outdoors reduces leg pain. Idk about other people but I used to always get leg pain after running 10 mins outside but most of the time I don't feel much pain after running 10 mins on a treadmill. Finally, and most importantly they attract gym bunnies and some gyms will have treadmills positioned in such a way that you can subtly watch their butt bouncing on the treadmill.

After being able to hit 10K+ I started running irl and got the reality check, but it's still useful for avoiding catching a cold in the wet.
Bottom line is they're definitely more of a beginner's tool and you'll end up running outside in the long-term, but they're valuable if you want to run

>b-but muh nature
god damn hippies. yes, nature is nice, but consider the point about consistency. if you only go out once a week is that really better when you're trying to progressively up your heart rate? and speaking of, modern treadmills will keep track of your metrics, which is good for developing a regimen and pushing yourself.

if it's not for you then okay, but I'm not gonna stop using it because you turn your nose up at it. idk seems like a boomer opinion.

The truth is: it depends.

I have run on treadmills and outdoors for about 10 years. Always set incline at 1 to equalize resistance of the treadmill to that of outdoors. Started tracking heart rate alongside time/pace/distance about 4 years ago.

I have run on treadmills (installed about 2 years ago in my local planet shitness) where my pace-adjusted HR will consistently be 5-8 bpm higher at peak vs outdoors. Those treadmills feel noticeably less bouncy than any other I've tried. They're also hell on my joints (developed iliotobial band syndrome when putting mileage on em). Most treadmills my HR will be 3-5 lower, again at a 1 incline and don't bother my joints any worse than outdoors (i.e. barely at all).

I've had a doctor say this about something else. He said he wouldn't run any tests because I was too young, even though there are accounts of people even younger than I was having issues. I suspect it's a cost-benefit analysis, and they're thinking about the other patients they already scheduled for the next 30 and 60 minutes.
I agree with you, it's very irresponsible. Malpractice, even. The sooner a person realizes most doctors don't know what they're doing and they don't actually care to do a good job, the better.

You can stick it on an incline and train for running uphill on a treadmill better than you can outside.
