It's why liposuction used to be so popular, people really wanted to lose their pounds only to find out it can take years if you're starting in the 300+ pound range, so they'd have medical intervention to get there in a more bearable amount of time. I think if you told people about how much time diet and exercise take to fix a fat person rather than just presenting diet and exercise as this easy option for when you're no longer feeling like letting yourself be a hamplanet, a lot more people would take avoiding junk food seriously.
