>Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

For the rest of the week, due to wagie shit, I only have an hour each night to change, run, post about it, and shower before I need to get to bed... so the rest of the week, I guess I'm doing short speed runs. Set a 5K pb for the year, by almost a minute, and finally getting some green numbers in the spreadsheet again
Saw 1 heron fly by over the river for a moment, was behind some trees, but I saw its huge wings. Saw 2 rabbits at the end, but unfortunately I'm out of carrots. The water level in the river is really low, the geese were basically standing up in the middle of it. Soon it will be salmon run time

You will be better off with any goal even if it's arbitrary, the feeling of constantly edging closer can be good 'motivation' (although expecting motivation is mostly a meme, you just do it because you do it). This is general life advice. Nothing wrong with sticking to short distances, go for a 20min 5k so you can mog 95% of running normies.

Neither is inherently β€œhealthier” they are different types of workouts. Running faster/shorter will be more of an anaerobic workout that will strengthen your muscles more. Longer slower runs are more aerobic and will strengthen your cardiovascular system more. You probably burn more calories doing the shorter runs, but recover more quickly and can workout more doing the slower runs. Ideally do both. You’ll eventually get faster for your short runs, and be able to keep you now fast speed for longer.

Eh they should be good for like 200-300 or something. I would be afraid of injuring myself wearing new shoes on such a long run for the first time (even just from tying the laces wrong). Maybe just do 5-10k the first time see how it goes?

ROONING ADVICE:

Currently I'm training with 2 runs per week:

1 long/slowish run. The last one was just under 10 miles in 1:40.

1 sprint interval. The last one I did was 4x4.

I also do a few long walks per week, plus one weighted ruck.

Share any advice or pointers given that I currently run about a 14 minute 2 mile and 24 minute 3 mile.

>How do you guys run so much every week without injuring yourself?
Thicker shoes and even carbon fiber moves the pain from the ligaments to the muscles, at the least for asphalt running.
Gravel and grass is easier on the joints.
You can do HIT to improve lung and heart capacity, which means your form will get less sloppy as you tire

But the main problem is that the body adapts, meaning the longterm goal is to build enough endurance and habit to actually be able to decently jog 50km+ a week.
You can supplement MSN, C and K2 for easier bone gains. But its still atrociously slow. Similarly joints and muscle respond to increased protein consumption, but its still slow.
Just remember that a lot of people get filtered somewhere on Couch to 5k, or get happy with their gains and just go for maintenance.

I do 5k runs but I try to go as fast as possible. My time is around 23-24 minutes, I think my knees get sore because I work a job where I'm on my feet all day and I'm not as lean as I could be. I've only been rooning for 6 months but I've only recently been getting sore knees.

I also train legs too which doesn't help, I think they're already under a lot of strain without running

Cardio is absolutely insufferable for me, so frustrating almost to the point of desperation

Is it a boredom issue? Do you listen to anything while running? Music, podcast, audio books? That can be a good distraction.
Are you running on a treadmill, track, outside? Different routes can make things interesting while running. Trail running keeps you mind active as you have to make sure you are landing on solid ground.
Do you run alone? Running with someone or a group can make it better.
Is your brain just fried in general by apps/tech where you can’t do anything for more than 5 minutes? You might need to take a break and reword your brain.

yeah no wonder you have pain
you're supposed to run a 5k all out like once every 8-16 weeks
you should be doing it like everybody else does; lots of easy runs, a bit of threshold and interval sprinkled in; enough that you can recover from
like you'd run your 5km pace but only for 800m then you'd take a rest and repeat it a few times and do that once a week
then you'd be doing like 3-4 very easy slow runs around 130bpm heart rate for 30-45 mins per run
one longer run per week
and you'd ease into it
you're doing the equivalent of going to the gym a couple times a week and going for a 1 rep max squat every time and wondering why you are injuring yourself

I actually got the SL2 on sale too (adidas had the college versions of them for like $45 or something). It's a pretty decent shoe, I actually just wore them for a run. It's not to far from the Evo, just a little bit worse in each characteristic except stability. The Evo SL is a bunch of race foam with no plate or anything to hold it together so it's kind of wobbly, I only wear it like once a week for that reason. However with the SL2 I still prefer using my old Asics Novablast 4s which have like 450 miles on them, my favorite everyday shoe(no clue about the new model but I heard good things).
Oh the only other thing with Adidas is their laces really suck.

It's to determine whether you are a pronator and see if you need a shoe that offsets. This is just a marketing gimmick. Even I fell for it since I was a "pronator" and "needed" modified shoes when I started running. It made things worse and caused injury.

Try different shoes and use whatever is comfortable. I like the Asics Ventures. They're cheap and last about 300 miles.

Shoe question, hope this fits here.

So I'm flatfooted, always been. But it's starting to irritate me, my ankles, calves and one of my knees are clearly giving me fatigue warning signs even after a couple miles of walking. I'm not fat, 6'0", 180lbs. So I've been looking at stability shoes, got offered good deals on ASICS Kayano 31 and Saucony Hurricane 24.

My basic question is: I know neither of those are speed shoes, but is it even advisable for me to run while my biomechanics are clearly unaligned, or is it better to walk for awhile and let my body adapt to the new mechanics? I say this because the Kayano felt much more stable and natural, while the Hurricane was much bouncier and sporty feeling. I'm not really planning to go full /roon/, I do concept2 rowing for cardio, but I wonder with these joint/tendon problems whether even jogging is a good idea.

So I had a bit of a fall on concrete due to a raised sidewalk and my foot just catching it today , my knees got gashed up pretty good but I was still able to finish my run.

Its been about 5H since , it feels tight , there's VERY VERY minor radiating pain if I stand too long/generally along the inner leg side of the shin

I've never been injured in this exact spot / zone so I don't know what I should do per say. I'm thinking knee braces going forward for the next little while.

It doesn't hurt to run or walk but I'm backing off from both, weirdly my achilles feels tight/sore as well but I don't know how that would be the case as I fell forward.

Red & Blue in picrel are the spots of the gashes

Is this an emergency situation / would it be overkill if I walked to my General doctor and asked for an x-ray?

Maybe tomorrow it'll calm down

I used to row a lot but I started running because I felt like rowing was only making me better at rowing and not transferring to anything else, I'd be rowing 3x4k regularly but still have my legs get tired from extended walking (I have a desk job so don't walk a lot in day to day life). I could be crazy but I swear my feet have gotten less flat since I started running a lot, and my feet and ankles in general feel like they're in better shape than ever. I think the running has strengthened everything up and pulled it all into alignment better than before.

I'm not a doctor or anything so I'm not saying running will 100% fix your issues, but I wouldn't just completely dismiss it. I think there is a chance it could actually help. what do you mean only? if that's around your 3k race pace (this is just my guess), it's a vo2max session and it's supposed to hurt towards the end. also with a pace like that you're supposed to take a rest that's as long as the time spent running the interval, so about double the rest you took. what are you trying to achieve with your session?
>I have made little progress in these months.
intervals, especially the harder, vo2max type ones, will give you a great performance boost but you'll stall after a while. the only way keep improving in the long term is to increase total running mileage, most of which is easy mileage. that's why the pro distance runners run 100 miles a week. hard intervals alone don't get you long term progress.

You can run them at your 5k pace 4:30, so it’s a 5k training session. The volume adds up nicely to 4800m. At 5k pace the rest should be 75% of the time spent running the interval.

If your 5k race pace is 4:30 (so a 22:30 5k), running 6 x 800m with a ~3:30 rest shouldn’t be too hard in a training session. It’s not easy, but you’re not dying either. You can go a full 5k non stop at that pace in a race, right?

Yes, I have, but it's awful, way too tiring, not something I want to do 3x a week or anything. So I did my intervals and somehow this session felt easier than the 400's. Only 1 day between the two sessions too. The 4:00 pace was quite difficult I'll admit, but the other laps were quite enjoyable.

Do what ever you like, but I would still recommend c25k type of program. N2R program was my choise because I'm lazy fat.

Key to my success was speed so low that it would always be possible to jog atleast one more interval. The most willpower was to get shoes on and get out of the door. Jogging was 9/10 times pretty nice.
